E-mail Etiquette

We use e-mail so often, we sometimes forget the unwritten rules of email etiquette. Here are reminders of those rules, and common, everyday courtesy.

E-mail is a quick, easy way to take care of business, and keep in touch with family, and friends. We shouldn't forget though, to follow the unwritten rules of etiquette, just as we would when writing a letter, or speaking on the phone, in addition to common, every day courtesy.

  1. Don't use capital letters. It looks loud and angry.
  2. To draw a smile, draw it sideways with these characters :-) or :). For a wink, use the characters ;-) or ;). For a frown, use :-(. For a laugh use, :-D. For no comment :-x.
  3. Remember that e-mails unlike phone calls, can be saved and passed on to others. Don't say anything you will regret later. Insulting, angry, or rude messages - called flaming - are to be avoided.
  4. Frequently used phrases are often abbreviated, among many others, they include.
    • IMO in my opinion
    • FAQ frequently asked questions
    • BTW by the way
    • LOL laugh out loud
    • RTFM read the manual
    • MSG message
    • BFN bye for now
    • JIC just in case
    • CUL see you later
    • OIC oh! I see

I have a site full of free E-mail Etiquette services, articles, a Blog and even a Netiquette Quiz.

Why not stop by NetManners.com and check out the E-mail Etiquette 101?

Take care ~

Ruby, I hope I haven't offended anyone. I am completely ignorant about e-mail. I just type it in and send. I will have to be more careful.
