Face it, we blog cos we like the attention. Some of us blog cos we think we can make money from it.
Now I asked myself the hypothetical question:
If my life could be scripted, or engineered, so that it would be perfect for microcontent distribution via podcasts, blogs, webcam, random pictures etc what sort of content should I offer up?
I came up with two different approaches - The Way of the Attention Seeking Whore or the Path of the Inner Bore.
The Way of the Attention Seeking Whore
Let's assume you have no shame. But you are moderately conservative and not too keen on softcore pronography - so that rules out blatant exhibitist content. You're also very sexually active and can be considered attractive. You want to call attention to the kinky side of you but at the same time portray the image of a smart liberal.
What you want on your blog is lots of racy comments like "Why I am the sexiest man alive!" Or, "Do you think my boobs look small in this?"
After coming up with a suitably flagrant and flametroll of a post, advertise liberally on forums and chat rooms. Don't forget to include a picture or two, tastefully done up so that visitors can scream and hurl obscenities in the silence of cyberspace onto your post comments section:)
Another way of doing it is to be a real Cyber Doofus. This method requires you to unleash your inner dorkiness.
For example, you can take vids of your frens kicking you in the nuts. Man, I am sure lots of people would love to see a guy keel over in pain. Or you can go around and snap candid pictures of strange people and then watch their reaction. Better yet, snap pictures of pretty gals around town and post them up on your blog. Advertise liberally, sprinkle links to lots of adult sites and voila~ you got a money maker in your hands!
The Path of the Inner Bore
This avenue of thought requires you to pretend to be intellectual.
Write long, dissertation-like posts and wax lyrical on the colour of light or the inner game of roof tiling. Gaze into the crystal ball of the future and make opinionated, frightfully uneducated guesses on the outcome of a global conflict.
It doesn't matter if you aren't that smart, all you gotta do is write something smart alecky. (like this post for example!)
Your source of ideas should come from your morning paper. Just find a topic which interests you, google the topic, combine 'searched links' and your opinions into an expressed editorial and post it up online and you've got yourself a 'bore' post.
In conclusion, there's an art to blogging and if you manage to find consistency in your posts, then that should be your style and stick to it. Blog cos you love the attention, and not because you need the attention.
