In one of my earlier articles, I showed you 10 Essential Google Search Tips and Valuable Tricks. This time I am introducing to you another fun way to use Google products. Google Trends is a smart little tool provided by Google to see the searching trends of a particular keyword. Other than using it for my Adsense research, I use it for fun and get the facts and figures straight..
You can go to Google Trends and search for a keyword of your interest to see the popularity of that key word. You will be provided with a graph which will have two parts. The first top part will show the search volume for that keyword and the second section will show the news reference volume for the key word. You can also compare different terms by separating them by “,” (commas). So, why wait, try it out now. Here are some interesting outcomes which I would like to share with you all.
Yahoo (Blue) or Google (Red)
Most people search for their own name in Google. This phenomenon is called Ego Googling. But the first thing I searched for after coming across this nifty tool was the answer to the age old question. Which one has more popularity? Google or Yahoo? I personally thought that it was Google all the way. But the results were actually quite surprising. This was the first question I asked. And it clearly shows that Yahoo is on top and Google is clearly the follower. In 2005, Google made a huge leap, but couldn't take a lead.
Clinton (Blue) or Obama (Red)
Ok, here is the big question. Who has got more popularity, Clinton or Obama? Like you can see, initially Clinton was leading and then Obama made a big leap and was leading ever since.
Nokia (Blue), Samsung (Red) , Motorola (Orange)
My next query was to see which of these 3 consumer electronics companies received more internet presence. Clearly the leader was Nokia followed by Samsung. The thing to note here is that the popularity of Motorola has been slipping in the last couple of years. I wonder why? Maybe they haven't come up with a new quality model since the Moto Razer. What do you think?
Dell laptop (Blue) or HP laptop (Red)
So, the next query was to know which laptop has gotten more popularity, Dell or HP. (For all the Lenovo fans, I did not get continuous data for Lenovo and that is why I omitted it.) Like you you see, Dell was dominating the Laptop world before, but is now facing some tough competition in popularity from the HP guys. Which one do you prefer?
Tesco (Blue) , Asda (Red)
My next search was to compare the two biggest retailers in the UK. I chose Tesco and Asda to find out which one is more popular. Even though Wallmart acquired Asda, it did not do much good for Asda's Internet popularity. Tesco is still leading and is also widening the gap.
Spiderman (Blue), Superman (Red)
Ok, I know this is childish, but the inner child in me has always wanted to know which one was really more popular. Personally I always liked Superman, but Spiderman turned out to tickle the imagination of millions more than Superman could ever dream of. The spike in the graph shown by D indicates the time when the movie “Superman Returns” came out. Turns out, Spidy turned out to be much more popular that our flying superhero.
