Are Myspace and Facebook a Danger?

Dangers of Myspace and Facebook is it really a big deal? Well, some users would say no, but for a girl who was found dead a week or 2 ago after meeting with someone off Facebook, it became a grim reality.

Anyone who go's on the net or knows someone who does at some point has heard about Myspace and Facebook . These are two really good programs in some aspects but in others seem to be a real danger.

Myspace is a public forum more less to post your blogs and videos and so on where as Facebook is a friend finder program with a little Myspace thrown into it. I have used Myspace and have a profile there and also on Facebook. Out of the 2 Facebook seems to have more danger in it.

For example, after signing up you create your profile then off you go adding details like where you live and so on. Well after this all your details are available to your friends on your list but only them. This is where it starts to get dangerous though. Once those friends are on your list then their friends can see your info and so on.

I have been a member of Facebook for months and yes it has worked in helping me find a lot of old friends I haven't seen in awhile I have also noticed that everyone puts all their info on there and anyone could eventually get it. Adults are a little smarter but kids are a little more trusting but this is how a young teen lost her life off Facebook.

About 1 month ago I got a thing from my mom on Facebook to join a cause to find a 16 or 17 year old who disappeared after meeting someone off Facebook. Well weeks went by the eventually the grim discovery of her body was found with no trace of the killer from what I heard.

Thats the point I'm trying to hammer in that are kids are in big danger on these programs and since there's no real way of keeping our kids off them then what? These are huge sites with no sign of being shut down anytime soon. Both Facebook and Myspace are coming out with new applications everyday.

So all we can really do is keep a closer eye on our children when they are on the net and try to filter out what they are doing on line. In my opinion the Facebook and Myspace are good sites for adults but still a danger especially for our children.

You're passion and "Bring-it-home" personality are strong in your article. However, I feel like I'm being screamed at by a five-year old. Girl. Because I didn't buy lemonade. Read some more (of your favorites [american spelling]), look at grammar and sentence structure. Serious, it will make people who matter pay more attention,.

Who says we can't keep our kids off of websites like this? Further more there is no one twisting anyone's arm to give out more info than would be safe. It is up to us to teach our children, block websites we do not want them at, and make sure they aren't using a computer outside of parental view...That means no computers in the bedroom, instead have a family populated area for the family to use the computer and study.
A side note or two here.
Lose the colloquial way of expression...say things like :"She was killed by someone she met on the Facebook website" Not "She was killed off Facebook."
Also sites like you are writing about are NOT programs. A program is an application usually installed on a computer and can run independently from the internet. These are websites you are writing about.

I think the author is mis-informed to some extent. I went in to my Facebook and had a look. I went to my friend list and selected one friend at random. Then I selected one of this friend's friends, also at random. I CANNOT see any of this person's personal info - address, phone, email.

On Facebook you can not put ur info on it, some are not neccirery, such as phone number, address, school. Facebook allows you to show info to certain people such as friends, friends of friends and everyone. YOu can also make ur self unsearchable, as in only friends can search u. i think facebook is safe as long as u hav everything on "only friends", otherwise u might be at risk

dear mr nicholson
your article is poorly written and it does not only lack structure, but meaningful arguments as well. facebook and myspace and the likes do not only imply a huge waste of time, they are dangerous in many other ways - i definitely concur on this. but what you mention here is the sad occurrence of some gullible teenage girl meeting up with the wrong guy - someone she met on facebook, and someone she might have run into on any online dating platform, and chat room etc. facebook is not a dating site though it might be used as such. facebook\'s dagers are somewhat different - the applications scan all your data, such as birthday and address, your consumer profile becomes more and more accurate as you keep entering your preferences, and the wrong pple might acceed your data or - worse - create a fake facebook profile using your identity. fake profiles are sort of booming, and as much it might sound fun at first, it actually isn\'t at all, as a woman i know might argue, whose fake profile listed her as a prostitute, including her cell phone number and address and pictures..
another nice-ish story is the one of a guy took a day off from work and ws then asked to provide the medical certificate because his boss had spotted him on facebook with a \'status\' indicating \"i am not going to work today. heck, no! staying innnnnnnnn!\" sure, it\'s all about the privacy settings of your account, but even so!
and isn\'t it spooky that even after you delete your account, facebook keeps a copy of it! and what about all those pics, the embarrassing ones that you only \'share\' with your facebook friends. even when deleted, they stay with facebook, that also keeps a copy of all former versions of your profile
and what about the ludicrous scams they call \'causes\', like \'feed a child with just a click\'! or \'water my fairy garden and save the rain forest\'. harmless, you might say, but still: you waste your time AND you give facebook\'s parters even more chances to bombard you with ads.
