In Your Facebook

Facebook has been both the demon and salvation in many people's lives. Amy Huang explains why she is totally in love with the concept.

Facebook has taken over my life. It's not like I am not busy enough at work already, but I just spent a whole two hours finding out what colour I am today, what my kissing style was, whether any one out there has a crush on me, and most importantly, feeding my pet so I can challenge others to a race.

Not only that, I had to congratulate five people who recently got engaged (as changes in status alerted me of the fact) and console more friends who are newly singles.

Facebook has indeed, taken over the world of online socialising. Unlike MySpace, where I also have an account, it is easier to search for your friends, old school mates, ex-boyfriends and even your long lost relatives. You are able to state how you know the person (just in case you forget that Janet is actually your mum, not a friend from uni) and you are reminded that if you don't know a particular someone, then you shouldn't be "friends" with them.

I also enjoy Facebook a lot more as I get less request spams from businesses attempting to build up a network and looking for channels to promote their product. To me, Facebook is where you go to socialise, where MySpace is increasingly becoming an outlet for self-promotion.

There are applications galore on Facebook maximise member interactivity. When I first joined, I soon became tangled in the invitations to join social groups, to install virtual pets and virtual gardens that it can appear extremely complicated to someone who isn't used to computational activity. Thankfully, Facebook gives the users an option to decline these offers by clicking on "Ignore" so that if you are like me, you can keep your Facebook profile neat and free from unwanted contents.

Slowly, companies and organisations are starting to use Facebook as a way to do business, or spread the word. Charity organisations are allowing users to donate money through Facebook as well as create awareness for their cause, while larger corporate have their own network on Facebook to keep their employees happy and creating a sociable work environment.

Many may argue that it is unsafe to be publishing your details on such a widely accessible website. There have been incidents where photos were personal stolen and used in other medias. Fortunately Facebook has a way to limit access to your account and settings that you can create to prevent unwanted visitors infiltrating your Facebook profile.

The merit of Facebook does not lie in its ability to find the world, because there are plenty of other social websites such as MySpace and Bebo that provides similar services. It is the ease of use and the flexibility of its contents that is to be commended for. There is a certain format everyone must use while using Facebook and applications are easy to install, and while some may just prefer to be able to message their friends and family, there are plenty of social interactions available for those looking for a bit of fun.

Another credit to Facebook is, I finally got back in contact with some cousins whom I've lost contact with for the past five years, along with all my exes on my friends list.

Well, better get back to it. I have invitations waiting for me to RSVP.

problem is, these sites are all about ego and novelty, and once you've added all your chums, done some updates, and caught up with everyone, what do you do next? it all gets a bit old hat. roll on the next fad!
