With the internet as the artists playground, it was only a matter of time before comics started appearing online. Without the constraints of a newspaper designated space or a finicky editor, comic writers can finally do whatever they want. They are free to choose the format and style, the topic and niche. With the huge amount of internet users out there, they are bound to find some small group of people who will become avid readers and fans. Yes, truly being a Webcomic artist must be great.
But how many of these artists actually get any decent sort of reward. Sure, most of them probably do it out of love for art rather than a desire for monetary gain, but that doesn't mean they don't need support. It costs money to buy the pens, pencils and inks needed. It costs money to get a scanner, to pay for hosting and to generally keep the comic alive. Some webcomics do manage to make a decent amount of money, heck some even manage to make a living off nothing but their Webcomic. Look at Ctrl-Alt-Del, Questionable Content or xkcd.
But there are lots of smaller Webcomic out there which simply didn't get noticed, and it's a shame too because some of them are pretty darn good. I'm not going to say I read all the little guys, or buy their stuff, but I do mention them to friends I think might enjoy them. I'm not saying you should buy a t-shirt or even a hat, just tell your friends, click the ads, donate some extra cash. Personally, I can think of few things sadder than have some one stop doing the thing they love because they simply can't afford to keep doing it. Especially when they entertain others. So if you find a Webcomic you like, try and make it just a little more well known. Look out for the little guys.
Some of My Favorites
Fanboys
Another gamer based Webcomic, but still has a fresh feel to it. Funny, and at sometimes a bit disturbing. Take a look at the mini-comics, for added humour.
The Warehouse
Another humor based Webcomic, but good none the less.
Truck Bearing Kibble
Some of the jokes in this may require a bit of thought, but an excellent Webcomic all the same. Definitely worth the minimal thought required.
then of course Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire
amazing fantasy comic with great story and very lovable characters, once you get into it you\'ll have to read all 1700+ strips.. (it took me about 3-4 days of daily reading to accomplish that.. but it was worth it)
while the starting graphics aren\'t that good, it gets much better later.
third one would be Looking for Group. it has really nice colored graphics (although in my experience they can get quite confusing as well as bubble placement that kind of sometimes fail to point which one should be read first) but it has some very funny jokes.
