You shouldn't be considering music as a free career. You may be very talented at it, and not put all your eggs in one basket by planning on supporting yourself through songwriting. The majority of musicians play for the love of music, not to sell as many albums as they can and move to beverly hills. Music can be a very god hobby or even your main focus, but definitely not a career. Unless you are one of the extremely popular bands, you will not be making a living off of your music

Try to justify it any way you want, but the facts are these: Musicians practiced for many, many hours to learn how to play. Songwriters work VERY hard to create one song. (Do you think melodies just come out of the sky?) Recording studio time is astronomically expensive.

My wife is a songwriter. The only way she gets paid is if someone buys a song she wrote, or if it gets airplay. She has a college degree in music. She has an $8,000 piano. We do not have a Lamborghini. We do have an old Chevy minivan. As long as people think there's nothing wrong with piracy, we won't be getting a new one.

Bottom line is this: You don't work for free. You shouldn't expect musicians to either.

I just have to ad that really I dont think it's a majority of musicians that are stark raving angry about pirated music.
As I have several friends in bands with varying degrees of success (one band has a few music videos and has done a number of cross-country and cross-continental tours).
That is besides the point, while im sure they would rather people BUY their cd's as oppose to download music free off the 'net, it's the record companies that make the money off cd sales. Bands and artists make zilch.
In Canada, the HIGHEST paid artist for percentage of a cd sale is Celine Dion. She gets roughly $1 for each cd bought.
Your average band (and yes im including Avril Lavinge, and other 'current big star artists' as your avg. band) gets around 10 - 25 cents per cd.
That is why bands tour, touring and selling merchandise (tshirts, hats, patches, stickers etc.) is how bands make THEIR money.
It is recording companies that are freaking out over their massive losses, although in all honesty DROP CD PRICES.
I do buy cd's now and again, but id be alot more likely to buy them more often if i could only have to pay $10 instead of $25 - $30 for a cd with 12 songs.
