Net Menace

NET MENACE?

What would you do if one evening, you logged onto you mail box and found the following mail waiting for you, "Congratulations {insert name}: This is not a joke - winner announcement" or maybe it could be saying something like this "Ten Million Dollars winner Alert in ke: {your name} - for Addressee Only." No doubt your mind will flash back to the previous day when you entered your details to register as part of a lottery. Your hand will grow sweaty as they tremble excitedly. You've never been lucky before that is until now. You rush to open the mail and quickly scroll down the yellow page in search of information, cash awards and details of how you can collect your money. There is so much on the page, so many details and numbers that by the time you get to the end of the email penniless or worse minus a few bucks courtesy of your credit card, you'll be asking yourself what happened.

If you haven't figured it out yet, you have just become the latest victim of the advertisement campaign of the largest lottery style sweepstakes site, Freelotto Inc. The official story is simple and straight forward. The company doesn't require its players to pay to play its numbers and provides daily opportunities to win cash. The unofficial story is quite another, with horrifying tales of lies, scammed consumers and accusations of internet fraud. This is a story best told by the numerous complaints on web forums and chat sites. These sites are littered with complaints from many supposedly scammed subscribers and other pissed off consumers, all with a bone to pick with Freelotto Inc. amidst their calls that the site should be shut down.

According to the complaints, the crimes commited by Freelotto ranged from the simple types such as spamming to more serious ones best described as thieving. The messages from Freelotto and its many affiliate or associate companies such as PlasmaNet are basically overwhelming with some subscribers registering as many as 20 to 60 such emails per day. The worst part is that the spam messages have been noted to come incessantly even after opting out. One of the Freelotto's "marketing partners, PlasmaNet, has been widely noted for this particular lack of email etiquette. In the alleged thieving scenarios, users who have apparently given away their credit card information have noted losing certain amounts of money to Freelotto. Even those who gave away their information for the purposes of paying for the subscription have continued losing money even after allegedly cancelling their subscription. Most of the complaints were on the fake win claims where the users were told they"d won but in the end received nothing. Several users have been noted for having been convinced to first pay a small fee before getting their prize monies.

All these alleged reports of scamming and whatnot concerning Freelotto haven't escaped the watchful eyes of the NETPOL a.k.a. internet police. Sites such as Fraudwatchers.org have already taken note of the site and have even gone to pains to prepare special reports about this site and many others like it. On their site, Fraudwatchers give a four - point fact report on Freeotto. What was most surprising is that despite the fact that these facts were based on the fundamental properties of the site in question, Freelotto, they seem to contrast a lot with what most first time users and even many long time subscribers believe about freelotto. Most notable was the fact that Freelotto is actually not completely free, despite the huge banners displaying the said message. How come? Simple, marketing emails! In the words of the fraudwatchers themselves, "expect to be bombarded by marketing emails sent out by Freelotto"s "marketing partner" PlasmaNet.' And according to most users, there was no better way to put it.

Another fact that they pointed out which most users/ subscribers didn't even think twice about was that Freelotto is in real sense not a lottery but an online sweepstake and their own disclaimers say so. If this is the case, what is the need for the dodgy title? In the words of one consumer, "Question the intentions of anyone or anything hiding behind a false name" Another fact that is proving to be a hotly contested topic in chat sites concerns the winning notifications which according to Fraudwatchers isn't actually a winning notification. The notifications arrive in all forms but in the message so it's important to watch out for the fake things before you go in search of the real thing. The fake things have been known to ask for money.

The last fact unfortunately was most depressing and that was the fact that technically freelotto isn't a scam or illegal thus we won't be shutting down the site soon. But the Fraudwatchers still insist that you should report to the FTC, better business bureau or New York attorney General should they try something dodgy like billing you after you cancel their services. In general be satisfied in being among the few who know the real facts and truths of Freelotto.

Social Networking Sites: Plurk

Are you a fan of Twitter, the microblogging website that asks, “What are you doing?” If so, you've probably noticed the ever-increasing load-time of it's pages and service. Word of Twitter has caught wind of businesses and persons as a service that allows you to tell your networked buddies what your doing whenever you please. As more and more people flock to Twitter, more and more people are punched in the nose by a long page load time and a run-of-the-mill website layout. Twitter seemed okay, that is, until I learned of a wonderful new service that is everything Twitter could have aspired to and more: Plurk.

Plurk is a microblogging website that's been described as a synergy of Pownce and Twitter, sans all the chugging and isolation to one question (What are you doing?) Plurk has an attractive timeline design and a great color template. Wayne Smallman calls Plurk “more than a Twitter clone. Plurk is themed IM (Instant Messaging) for groups of people spread out on a time line,” (What is Plurk?). Plurk has a karma system, allowing users to grow and gain more freedom of customization and use as they participate and invite friends. The karma system encourages continuance of use and conversation amongst users.

Plurk has a very wide variety of features. Here are a select few:

Whatever you want to say: Plurk is not isolated to the question “What are you doing?”, but it allows you to say or narrate whatever you want to say or do!

Karma system: Plurk features a karma system which indirectly promotes conversation and site-utilization.

Cliques: Groups in Twitter are what Cliques are in Plurk. Plurk allows you to easily segregate friends and associates into cliques.

Timeline: A very attractive timeline design that allows one to not only view a large array of plurks, but also shift through timelines to see what went on two or three days in the past!

Lag: If you're coming off the boat from Twitter, for one, it must have taken the boat a long time to get here. Jokes aside, the lag of Twitter is not seen nearly as frequently as on Plurk.

If you don't think it's worth it to at least check out Plurk, think again, I checked out the site out of sheer curiousity and now plan to make a full migration to Plurk. Plurk is basically Twitter without the slow motion and with so much more freedom you can feel the wind against your bare face when you make the switch.

This article is about Internet social networks and what other exciting options that you might be missing out on. The vast expansion that is known by many names, but more infamously known as the Internet, Web, or Net, is truly a world that never sleeps - and while you sleep, the world that you remember has zipped right past you.

Major social networks such as Myspace, Facebook and YouTube attract millions of new unique visitors and registered members everyday, so this is where this article gives an honorable mention to those already worldwide well known “Super Mega Corporate Branded Giants leading the social networking industry”.
It is suspected that there are millions of social network members that could potentially be reading this article for the first time and grumbling inside that their social network isn't mentioned in this article, well there is always Google. There is absolutely no way to mention every single one of the thousands of social networks existing on the web today or yesterday.

This article is about the social networks that are uniquely different than the other guys that we all should know about by now. If you are scratching your heads after that last comment, then let me save you some time - you need to return to re-education camp and let friendly corporate proxies direct your attention to the hypnotic sights and sounds of the modern day “Big Top Traveling Circus”.

The social networks that are popular today - could be replaced by one of these other social networks, tomorrow. You are the future, so lead the way!

Innovative Technology Driving and Changing the Complexion of Our World

Technology is definitely the driving force of the present and the future. Not only do more and more exceptional advancements emerge on a daily basis, technology's influence is dramatically changing the complexion of how we live our lives.

Because of handheld devices that allow you to send email, take pictures, capture videos and carry on a conversation, as well as an array of other new possibilities, business and personal matters can be taken care of anywhere you go. Save time and send your loved one a quick text message while you are waiting in line to purchase your groceries. Check your email messages while you are on your way to your next meeting. Productivity is doubly increased, peace of mind is considered and supported, and the chance for efficient advancement is magnified.

Today, I found the article “10 Billion Video Views Online in December” stating that in December 2007 a record breaking 10 billion online videos had been watched. This is definitely a huge shift in consumer attention that will predictably change the direction of the entertainment field, the profitability of movie theaters, and the continued invention and innovation of more attention grabbing websites. It will be doubly interesting to see how this trend continues, especially when many of the online video websites show free movies, videos, and games; such sites, of course, are able to do so because they gleam their profits from advertisements and popularity ratings.

Are you curious about which online websites are the top rated sites on the internet? Check out Alexa. This site dedicates its focus on ranking the most popular sites in the world by country and worldwide. Worldwide, Google rates as number one, Yahoo follows closely behind in second place, while MySpace is consistently third in line.

As the trend of focus continues toward websites encouraging consumers to spend more time on their computers versus watching the television or other venues like going to movie theaters, etc, I have been questioning whether I should eliminate my television and cable bill altogether. What is the benefit of having my television, after all, when I can see many of the same shows (maybe a little later, but free) on my computer? That's a significant savings of about $50 per month.

For now, I realize that I like to be able to search certain sites and not have to be glued to one particular site (i.e. watching a movie). Having a television still offers you a function that one computer alone cannot; the freedom to utilize both at the same time, a convenience that I'm not ready to give up quite yet.

It is quite clear that the value of the limitless wealth of resources you can find online is priceless. You can spend a lifetime researching all the innovative websites, services, etc. that keep emerging and you will never run out of new sites to discover. Not only can such searches help you uncover helpful self-promoting sites if you are a writer, business owner, etc. they can open your eyes to new, unique, creative ways to better the way you live your life or conduct your business affairs all within the simple click of your mouse.

This Is Not Right: The 10 Most Eccentric Items Ever Auctioned Online

These crazy ten things that were either put up for sale or sold will blow you away and will leave you wide eyed and astonished. The following ten objects are in no specific order and are all considered to be pretty weird.

A Serial Killer's Fingernails

One of the weirdest things ever sold was a serial killer's cut fingernails. In 1979, two men named Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris rode through southern California on a killing spree that resulted in at least five victims.

Years later Roy Norris, the man in the mug shot above had his fingernail shavings that had been taped to the back of a Christmas card sold on the net. His fingernails only sold for $9.99 but still stand as one of the scariest and weirdest things ever sold on the internet.

A Person's Soul

In late 2007, an American man tried to sell his soul for $1 million dollars on the net. He said that the reason for selling his soul was to raise money for the Christmas season. He also said that the proud owner would be allowed to take the soul home in a glass jar along with a contract relinquishing ownership. The image above is a picture of the man who actually looks a little bit scary.

The following is a quote that the man had said about his soul,” I'm not really using it lately - and selling it on the internet is better than letting the Devil have it.” The soul never sold although it doesn't appear to be still up for grabs. FYI: In the past somebody's soul was successfully sold for $400.

A Liver

Another crazy item that was put up for sale on the net was someone's liver, which is the body part in the picture above. A guy from Florida tried to sell part of his liver for a possible organ transplant. The price for his liver reached $5.7 million dollars before being eventually pulled from the website it was being sold on. It was removed because it is illegal to sell body parts over the internet.

Haunted Rubber Ducky

Another very odd item sold on the internet was a haunted rubber ducky. In 2004, a man sold a so-called haunted rubber ducky, resembling the one above. He said his one and a half year old son had been telling weird and scary stories about fights that he and the duck had had. Also he said that his child had been bitten by the duck, making the child mean and vicious, and causing him to throw the duck across the room. After only 7 days on the site the rubber duck sold for the price of $107.50.

Jesus Toast

The seller of the product in the picture above had accidentally burnt his toast in a toaster. Before throwing the piece of toast away, he suddenly noticed the face of Jesus on his toast as if by some type of miracle. He put the odd piece of toast up for auction with the starting bid of $.99, although this piece of toast never ended up selling.

Justin Timberlake's French Toast

In March 2000, a leftover piece of French toast, half-eaten Justin Timberlake of N*SYNC was sold on a website. The entire group of N*SYNC was on the Z-Morning Zoo, some sort of TV show, on March 9th. On the show, Justin only ate one bite of his French toast! The seller said that the buyer would get Justin's half-eaten French toast, the fork he used, and the plate...complete with extra syrup! After a total of 40 bids and not even two days on the internet, the French toast was sold for a total of $3,154 dollars.

Rights to Name a Woman's Baby

In April 2005, a 33 year old woman named Melissa Heuschkel auctioned the rights to name her baby on the internet. After not being able to decide what to name her fourth child, Melissa decided to turn to an online bidding site. The rights for naming her child sold for a whopping $15,100 dollars. The online casino site named GoldenPalace.com bought the right of naming her baby. The casino website decided to name the child GoldenPalace.com. The image above is a picture of newly born GoldenPalace.com. Melissa said that the money received would go towards caring needs and toys for the new born baby.

Imaginary Friend

Another odd thing sold on the net was a guy's imaginary friend named Jon Malipieman. The image above is a picture of this imaginary friend Jon Malipieman, and as you can see he is imaginary. The man that sold Jon lived in the UK and said that he was selling Jon because he felt like he had grown out of him.

In the listings for the product the seller stated the following: “My imaginary friend Jon Malipieman is getting too old for me now. I am now 27 and I feel I am growing out of him. He is very friendly. Along with him, I will send you what he likes and dislikes along with his favorite things to do and his personal self portrait.” His self portrait is the picture you see above. Amazingly Jon Malipieman got 31 bids and ended up selling for over $3,000 dollars. Now that is Wacky.

Ghost Cane

In 2004 a so called Ghost Cane was sold on a bidding site. A woman in Indiana her dead husband's metal walking cane up for sale in hopes that her scared grandson would think that his grandfather's spirit would leave their house when the cane was sold.

The image seen above is actually a picture of the dead grandfather who is to the left, along with the scared grandson who is in the ladies arms. Her six year old grandson son thought that the grandfathers' spirit was haunting their home, causing him to be scared of everything. The cane received over 132 bids and sold for the price of $65,000 dollars. The buyers of the cane actually ended up being GoldenPalace.com.

Giant Cheetoh

In 2003 the worlds largest Cheetoh was put up for sale. The Cheetoh weighed more then a half an ounce and was as big as a kiwi. The image above is a picture of the giant Cheetoh and as you can see it is huge. The man who discovered the Cheetoh was Mike Evans. Before the Cheetoh could be sold it was taken off line and donated to a small town as a tourist attraction. Before being taken offline, the Cheetoh had received bids of up to $180 dollars and still had days left in the auction.

One Incredibly Amazing Website: Give 1.7k to the Charity of Your Choice for Free

Social Vibe is a site I just found out about. I was so impressed by it, I had to share it right away.

Tonight, a fellow Yuwie Yuwie friend told me about it and I decided to immediately check it out. While currently I don't have enough money to give to charities, this does not mean that by simple efforts, I can't help various important social causes. I thought it wouldn't hurt to see what it was all about.

It is a completely free of charge program. This, of course, was music to my ears. By simply signing up for SocialVibe and taking about 10-15 minutes to answer questions like, what is your favorite music, you can become sponsored by your favorite brands. They also give you the option to choose the cause you feel most passionately about. I choose education as my cause and Victoria Secret as my sponsor. Within minutes, by signing up, I had raised $1, 745 for my cause! I was completely stunned!

Because of the incredible results, I thought, I wonder if I can be sponsored by more than one brand? So I investigated this possibility.

I choose Nike. After answering about 5 more minutes of questions, like magic, I had another sponsor! I thought well, why not try another? You never know what you can come up with if you don't try. But, it appears that you can only be sponsored by two brands. I guess there had to be a limit somewhere in their program!

Now, the next step is to embed the html code for your brand's logo on your MySpace or Yuwie page, or whatever social networking site you choose to.

SocialVibe rewards you for keeping their logo up for a certain amount of days with points that can be used for various items they specify. For me this part wasn't as big of an incentive as knowing that I can be raising important funds, just by promoting my favorite brands. It's a win-win situation for everyone and I'm always up for such opportunities. Just knowing that about 10-20 minutes of my time raised almost 2k for an important cause opened my eyes to the fact that there is so much we can do to better this world that, in the busy rush of our days; there are opportunities that are creative and convenient.

So remember everyone - take care of yourself and each other. Best wishes to all.
