This is a great network of general purpose “Q&A” forums.

When you are stumped on how to reboot your frozen iPod or remove the latest pain-in-the-neck Trojan Virus that got past your Norton software, these forums are similar to knocking on your neighbors door and asking them to take a look at the problem. There are tons of very knowledgeable, eager to lend a hand surfers on the web.

They say the only stupid question is one that isn't asked. So, if you can't find the answer you are looking for, simply post a new thread for your own question. It's extremely easy.

The down side is that you are potentially getting misinformation from people just as qualified as you… meaning they own a computer connected to the internet. Take everything you get with a grain of salt and do as much fact checking as possible.

Wiki Answers

This is a better quality version of the same forums as set by Yahoo! Answers; however, the moderation of this site tends to weed out more of the scam artists and internet thugs. I also find that Wiki Answers has slightly less traffic than Yahoo! Answers, but that traffic is of a more expert nature. The responses on Wiki Answers to most formed questions tends to have a more in-depth, researched response as opposed to a “know-it-all-who-actually-knows-nothing” short-hand response like Yahoo! Answers.

But, again keep in mind that these are everyday people and their information can be wrong.

YouTube

I know what you're thinking… YOUTUBE? ARE YOU KIDDING?

To use YouTube effectively to educate yourself you need to be good at narrowing your searches. Most anything you are looking to accomplish, someone else has videotaped themselves doing it. Unfortunately, you have to sift through the mountainous pile of dribble and utter crap on YouTube first. But beneath all of the terribly done acoustic covers of songs that already sucked and videos of preteen girls dancing in front of the mirror, there is quality information.

I have watched videos on cooking, software tutorials, car repair, and music instruction. The good thing about a YouTube Tutorial is that unlike the text responses on Wiki Answers or Yahoo! Answers, you are watching a firsthand video and will definitely notice if the person in the video fails the objective.

ExpertVillage

I use Expert Village almost daily for guitar lessons and cooking tips. This site is absolutely awesome. There are videos and text files instructing you on nearly every topic you could come up with. The browse interface works fairly well and you could easily waste hours sifting through all the interesting topics.

The best part is that these videos are all recorded and hosted by ACTUAL Experts. Every post has a description of the person posting the video. Typically you'll notice that these are professionals or professors with decades of experience in the field of topic they are discussing.

Expert Village has an application process that sifts out the weaklings. If a user can't show credentials or a CV that supports their "expert" status they are not allowed to post.

The quality of this information is exponentially higher than any other site out there. The tutorials are broken up into short, manageable bits of information that are small enough to be streamed with even the slowest of connections.

Some of the motions may be a bit unnatural from the point of physics. It sounds boring when the coins move up and down the ramps made of stack of coins to the end. You may scream, “Coins, c'mon, move on!”

Greeting Hello in over 800 Languages

Now, you've no problem to greet the world “Hello” in more than 800 languages. But how accurate is it? I am doubt of its accuracy. I think some of the “Hello” phrases in Japanese are no longer used in everyday conversations. Of course, “konnichiwa” is always heard, but the dialectical phrases, particularly the “Kansai-ben” will probably appear awkward to the local people there as they are rarely used for conversation these days.

These codes appear to me as ASCII art, and this website seems to be very odd and pointless. It was the weirdest website created in 1995 and its HTML source code reveals a detailed diagram of a hydrogen bomb. It is said to be a diagram plan for 2 types of nuclear form which can be found here.

This is a type of BMI calculator used to measure your ideal weight. It requests your height, and frame size but does not ask for your gender. TeenScreen is part of Bush's National Mandated Mental Health Screening program. This test takes 10 minutes to diagnose the mentality health of the kids. When it was done in Colorado, America, 71% of the kids who involved in this test were diagnosed to have a mental disorder. Flickr has been around over years and has grown more fun. It helps that the digital photography's gone towards its milestone over many years. It is hard not to favor of Flickr as it is more interesting and an easy service to use. It is owned by Yahoo. Now, the Yahoo's Mail account has become much better than its crappy Yahoo! Photos!

It is easy to sign up for Flickr. As long as you are a member of Yahoo, you are given an opportunity to sign up here unless you aren't averse to join Yahoo. At your first attempt to sign up, you will be acknowledged that Flickr is a member of Yahoo's happy family. Hence, you are asked to sign up for a Yahoo account first. I mean, if you are not a member of Yahoo but you already have a slew of other accounts, it just simply means irksome for you. However, once you get pass this hassle, Flickr appears to be a breeze for you. You don't have to get annoying to start venturing this website as there are helpful little hints here and there to get you started, and since there are so many people on Flickr already, it is likely you will have someone to bug for tech support.

Flickr makes uploading and posting your digital images very much hassle-free. The Flickr Windows integration makes uploading as simple as a right-click. By installing the Flickr app, there will be an additional "Send to Flickr" command in the right-click menu.

It is all very easy and very streamlined but you need to accustom with the terms Flickr uses for its photostreams. Or else, once you have uploaded a few photos, you will very soon get hang of it.

When Google bought Picasa, they decided to make it fully a part of the Google family by adding the overly documentations into its Google Wikibase. As a comparison, when Yahoo bought Flickr, they didn't make it more Yahoo alike as Frickr still has the authority to maintain its own friendly identity that is separated from the Yahoo family. And it seems that, Flickr works well for Yahoo as it has emerged as one of the famous photo sharing sites. For Picasa, though its download site is 5.8MB which is not too big by any means but its instructions just to learn how to use it is sometimes appeared to be annoying.

Though I am half declined to use this website immensely, it deserves my interest to visit this website. It is wonderful enough to insert pictures to its database while creating new images even while Picasa is opened. Certainly, it makes a wonderful computer organizer for your photos. The good thing about Picasa is that it has a fantastic photo-editing feature, making you forgive it for its troublesome which is particularly dealing with its overly wordy documentations.

With Picasa, you can preview and see every image on your PC by folder in a quick and easy manner. That means you could view them in selected batches and in slideshow formats. You can crop, correct red-eye, alter color, straighten, fill light as well as fix contrast with its more-fun-bit effects! This is all done by simply pressing at the various pretty buttons. The neutral color pickers, color temperature, highlight and shadow pickers are other innovative features that Google gives away for its users.

Apart from the above features, Picasa also permits you to post up your Web albums as part of Google services, certainly. Pikeo is not a newly-invented website as it has been around for quite some time. Its name tells you that it's quirky thing that has albeit limited, appeal and an unusual stuff the internet users could expect for. However, it is fundamentally a photo sharing website. It means a lot for the travelers to share their travelling experiences via photos and geotagging with the world. The feature of geotagging allows you to easily tag your photos with locations and keywords to identify them quickly when you search through the photos which will definitely save your time from the hassle of browsing a large image file. The integrated slideshow and trip daily are pretty interesting features you will find when using Pikeo. In fact, Pikeo shows your photo location in the map in the most interesting and attractive manner.

The start page of Pikeo is packed with the wonderful stuffs that might have intrigued you to give it a try. It gets you some time to load and timed out before you are prompted for a registration. When you log in, you will be greeted with your user dashboard and a fairy interesting site. Well, this very mobile-friendly website is currently in a beta version. As long as you could surf through your mobile, you will find Pikeo usable. It has two facets- the Web experience and the mobile experience for Pikeo. However, I found the latter is fun, the former less so.

You might now love the person who invented the digital camera as you can have so many spectacular pictures at your fingertips even if you just have a glimpse of moment.

Webshots is cute, cool and fairly straight to the point. Thankfully, its sign up procedure is relatively simple as compared to Frickr. Currently, Webshots has over 584 million photos, which is considered a huge amount, come to think of it.

If you choose to pay US$29.88 a year for stock photos that aren't the usual boring bits of stock, you get unlimited downloads of the available Pro Shots. Nevertheless, when you download the photos for your own use or for other commercial purposes, you have to contact the photographer individually. Like Pikeo, Webshots is all mobile support. Its mobile version is pretty simple and faster to download as compared to OVI. This is certainly a plus for those who want to have an easy and a quick mobile experience.

As OVI is powered by a Java app, you are requested to have Java installed on your system prior to the use of this website. The upload speed will depend utterly on your internet connection. You can email your photos to your OVI account, but prior to this, you need to add the originating email address to your address book. If neither of these options appeal, then Window XP users can use the Window XP Web Publishing Wizard.

OVI is a website that you can upload various types of media. They don't limit users to merely photos or video, and perhaps, this is the beauty feature of OVI. That means you can share anything here, but its drawback is that you can't post anything larger than 100MB. With the 100MB limit, OVI makes its website less likely to be a dumping site for an illegal file sharing. Some users may have cried foul to find such limitation. Apart from this small catch, OV1 is the wonderful website for you to upload as many files as you desire and as often as you wish. You can even upload every RAW still on your camera, which is obviously a photographer's dream.

OVI has made its website simpler to embed your images from your channel onto web pages. These channels mark the strength of OVI- it is easy for you to create more channels as you wish, even it allows designating privacy options for your media channels. OVI offers its users with the widgets and various means to display the media files, including tickers, Flash, JavaScript and slideshow, which are obviously trying to persuade you to make use of it. OVI also offers tons of features besides its little fault for an incredible price- free of charge!

This is where Last FM comes in; I had previously dismissed Last FM unaware of its wonder. Last FM works in two ways; firstly you can type in the name of an artist and listen to a variety of tracks from that artist. The second is where Last FM works at its best, type in the name of your favourite artist then just listen. Yes Last FM will pick tracks from your favourite artist, but secondly what it will do through keywords and musical similarities is find music from similar artists when you select the radio station option.

Last FM does not give you a track, it streams them; the fact that they are streamed rather than downloaded is how the service remains free. On your normal home computer whether it's a desktop or a laptop there is absolutely nothing to install, you simply go to the Last FM website and play away. You can increase your varying choice of music through Last FM; say for example you type in Fleetwood Mac, the variety of artists it chooses to pair up with that style may vary and include the likes of Elton John, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, etc. Once you have listened to the streamed radio station that Last FM has prepared for you (which is pretty much endless), the next step is to move out slightly by selecting one of the artists that were streamed before. While the music choice streams you back over familiar ground, it widens the picture slightly if you had started with The Rolling Stones it might stream you into Lynard Skynard, The Eagles and Guns & Roses. Of course these are just examples, you would be amazed where the streams take you, and often how you rediscover songs you have not heard for years, while also letting you listen to brand new tracks from fresh new artists.

You can of course create an account, this allows you to store preferences, and to create a list of favourite tracks; this last option allows you the great opportunity to choose new music choices in an informed manner.

The wonder of Last FM is not restricted to the computer, my iPod Touch comes with Wi-Fi (obviously this will work with the iPhone too) , and by visiting the Applications Store from the handset you can install the Last FM application, don't get me wrong you don't need to install, you can stream straight from the web via the Safari browser, but the benefit of downloading the application is far more interesting. Like normal streaming it all works in the same way, except as well as storing favourites you can simply tap a button and move straight to the iTunes purchasing screen should you want to buy the track.

Worth a mention is that if you are a recording artist, you can upload your music and allow it to join the streams, there are a small group of artists whose careers have been enhanced by using Last FM.

Writers can write about anything (within reason) and get paid every time someone reads the tutorial that they wrote. This is a good opportunity to checkout especially if you want to earn more from what you write about already.

You then go to your nice new, shiney computer (or mates, or girlfriend ect), plug, slide or shuve your drive or CD into the USB port or whatever the drive goes into (I'm not getting hung up with “technical words”) then open iTunes on the new computer then a window with the music in it should have opened, if not, look in windows explorer for PC and HD for mac (I think, I use PC for this…), click, hold and slid the files from the folder to iTunes it's really that simple. 

LyricsWorld is an easy-to-use, very accurate lyric search engine that asks you for as little or as much as you know to find your song. Just type the lyrics you know into a search bar. It doesn't even have to be from the chorus. Nine times out of ten, the very first song shown will be the one you're looking for.

I've personally tested this site every time I got on and continue to do so to this day. It's never been wrong so far. I've even looked for songs in other languages and it still works. Of course, you can also use the title or artist if you like. But while you won't always know the artist or title, it's very unlikely you won't be able to remember a single line from the song.

There is a range of various sources out there and they can range from the unsigned garage-band giving away their demo, right through to the free promotional giveaways of the major record labels. Knowing the validity of your source is the defining factor and if you follow this guide, you will be able to get regular free and legal music without the guilt or hassle. This brings us to another important factor - the Creative Commons licence.

I won't go into to much detail, as the Creative Commons have a perfectly definitive explanation at their website about what each of licences entail, but in short; all digital media under their branding, including music, is tagged with an alternative to the standard copyright license. Many bands and artists make their work(s) available on these licences, which help them circulate or spread the popularity of their art to a wider audience. So, where can you find this music?

As mentioned there are many websites available to fans of music, but here is a top-five list of free and legal music sources.

MySpace Music: The musical side of the social networking site is obviously a no-brainer to those with more experience, but there is a bounty of free music to be found there and it's a good place to start if you are a little unsure about the issues surrounding this topic. Artists that are registered on MySpace often make music freely available themselves for their fans to download directly form their page. There are also monthly giveaways and promotional songs distributed as well as albums that can be preview (“streamed”) before their official release dates. It requires some searching, but you're bound to find things you like.

Pit-falls: If you are downloading from a major label artist, then make sure the music available is from their official MySpace page and not a fake one - check for tour dates and blog entries to make sure.

The Hype Machine: The golden gateway to the musical blogosphere! This is where all the music blogs from around the globe get collated and displayed in one place. It's essentially and arrogated list of what is currently hot and what people are talking about. There are no direct downloads available, but you are freely able to listen to a never ending stream of music that increases by the second. You can add favourites, save songs to your own playlist and also read the many articles that get displayed from the millions of music blogs around the world.

Pit-falls: There isn't really anything to be worried of if you stay on The Hype Machine's website, but if you do stray off into the world of musical blogs, be very wary.

Direct From The Record Companies: Independent and major record labels sometimes give away their own music- in some cases whole albums are often made available! This is usually for promotional reasons and is widely available without registration or subscription. A few examples are; Secretly Canadian, This is Fake DIY, Creation Centre, and Kill Rockstars. There are so many out there, way too many to list here, but if you search around you can easily find them.

Pit-falls: None. But it may be worth your time if you do sign up to their mailing lists, as these usually contain the occasional free MP3!

Muxtape: Is the Mecca of mixtapes. It's a relatively new website where you are freely able to listen to millions of pre-created user made mixtapes. Yet again, there isn't any music to directly download, but there are vast amounts of songs for your listening pleasure.

Pit-falls: Be aware that if you create a mixtape yourself, you MUST own the correct copyright or have permission from the artist(s).

Music Blogs: This grouping is a tough one. I wont down-cry the musical blogging community, because I am apart of it, but it is widely known that some are legal and others aren't and it can be very tricky working out which is which. If you do feel like stretching your legs and branching off to explore the vast realm of the music blogs, stick to the main ones such as; The Stereogum, AOL s Spinner, or RCRD LBL - if you are unsure about the legality of a blog you can always email the blogger directly - just don't except an honest reply.

Pit-falls: Music blogs are a sticky minefield so tread carefully when downloading MP3s from them. Try to determine the credibility of the blog by the type of music they are publishing - e.g. it's highly unlikely Bob Dylan would let an amateur blogger host one of his entire albums freely.
