The Search Engine Wars: Five Classic Battlefields Where Google and Yahoo Meet

We have all learned to love Google and Yahoo. They give us instant access to information, photos, videos, websites. Yes, these search engines even help us find answers to everyday life. With the rise and popularity of web spider technology, possibly one question comes to the minds of majority of internet users:

Which is the best search engine out there, and which will dominate the internet in the future years to come?

Listed below are five (5) distinct areas where Google meets face to face with Yahoo, in an attempt to win your affection, support, and of course, your elusive click. Let's see who wins!

Google Search Results versus Yahoo Search Results

At first glance, there seems to be no difference. But look closely. While Yahoo gives you the most popular sites regarding the topic you're searching for, Google gives you MORE and BETTER search results. Just try to type Barack Obama, and you'll see that Google Search will show you an index of pages that are not present in Yahoo Search.

The result? Google wins by unanimous decision.

The Home Page: Who Gets The Vote?

The home page is very important because it gives readers an overview of what's happening in the world on a specific day. Google is known for its simple, "uncomplicated" page (is there such a word as 'uncomplicated?). All it has is a simple field where you can type your search keyword and some additional buttons.

Yahoo is different. The home page contains news, information, games, e-mail and many other features. You can even do your own online research survey by looking at the "Today's Top 10 Searches" section (this feature is vital for bloggers who need to choose popular topics to write about). Yahoo News gives you fresh updates every half hour or so. Being on Yahoo gives you a feeling that you're up to date with all the events of the world.

The outcome? Yahoo wins by KO.

Unique Search Engine Features

Both Yahoo and Google have unique search engine features that the other doesn't have. For example, Yahoo Search gives you the capability to have a 'video' search and a 'shopping' search. Google, meanwhile, offers you a chance to do a 'blog' search, where you can surf all kinds of blogs on a specific topic. Both of these unique features are highly useful, and I cannot live online without having one of them around!

Who wins? Well, it's clearly a draw!

The Email Service Is Where The Rubber Meets The Road

This is where the going gets tough. Both of these search engine networks offer outstanding email services. So the question is this: Is Yahoo Mail better than Gmail? Well, I don't know the stats and all those complicated stuff, but I agree that Yahoo is the "the best frequented web based email", as stated on the Yahoo Mail home page. However, Gmail seems to be catching along pretty quick.

This is an unofficial verdict, but I think Yahoo wins by a narrow margin -- a split decision.

Google Adwords/Adsense vs. Yahoo Search Advertising

The advertising and publishing service that Yahoo offers appeals to big website owners. When I say 'big', I meant websites that have huge amounts of commercial traffic, and this includes company home pages, professional business sites, and websites owned by companies which are popular in the world. However, Yahoo Search Advertising is a pay per click method that is yet to outperform the Google advertising system (am I biased? I don't think so). Here's why:

Google Adwords (advertising aspect), and Google Adsense (publishing aspect), appeals to the 'little guy' and individual blog/website owners. Virtually anyone who has a blog or website can advertise and publish with Google. And because Google owns Blogger.com (one of the largest free blog providers), anyone who has a Blogger account can register with Google Adsense, a pay per click publishing service that pays you for placing Google ads on your blog. This unique appeal to the masses places Google on top of all online advertising systems, and they might stay on top for a long time. So in terms of advertising, Google wins by KO!

But when it comes to indicating which is the best search engine on this planet, YOU will be the one to ultimately decide. So what's your pick?

Is It True? Can We Really Earn Extra Profit From Blogging?

Do you have any tips on the Dos and Don'ts of blogging? Because I am confused on some rules that they are implementing like for instance is the PPC or pay per click. Every time a reader click on the ads on you page, you'll received payment from it. One blog site doesn't want you to inform anybody that you have new blog for them to read because they will be forced to click the advertising links on your blog site. Or it's like a human nature instinct that you families and friends will help you earn some extra money by clicking the ads they saw on your blog site. And of course they know the fact that every time someone click on these ads it means money for you. Another one is the opposite of the latter. They will notify you via email that your work was already published, they will also ask you to tell all your friends and family and provide a link to your published blog. Wew! A very opposite rule they have there.

Is there a fastest way or a shorter way maybe to reach the level when you're getting paid big time? Or you really have to start from the bottom and realize the success of your work after 3 or maybe 5 long years. I really don't have a clue yet so I'll start here at bottom. Your comments and advises will be appreciated whole heartedly. More questions to come as I get along on these blogging system. Thank you!

Three Young Blogs That Stand Out in the Crowd

Everyone loves reading blogs. But these days, finding good blogs is a headache. Many popular blogs use methods like link exchanges to get noticed on search engines. So, where are good blogs. They are not very far, yes, they are just a few pixels away from here down the page. These are three blogs that are new but look promising. They are very different from the crowd. Let us have a look.

How Not To?

This blog is all about tips and tricks. There is nothing new here as far as content goes. The real difference is the way of representation. Every tip is given the way it is not meant to be! A typical post has title like "How not to: Surf Securely", "How not to: Reduce your Carbon Footprint" etc. The representation makes this blog fun to read. Additionally, links to terms and free downloads are present. Most of the content is related to computers but there are also posts on personality and management.

Life of an Unorthodox Loyalist

The moment you see the words "Unorthodox Loyalist" in title, you know that this blog is not part of the crowd. According to the owner of this blog, "this blog is as colorful as life." and you can find many topics here. Ranging from Browsers to Television, there are many posts for every label. Living to the title, the thinking of the owner seems pretty different from the crowd.

Shadow Star

This is a story blog. The story is a futuristic science fiction and packs good punch. The story is pretty simple, humans had to leave earth after an alien attack on earth. Now, the survivors are living on a planet called Shadow Star where conditions favor life. A mysterious man Master Aragdo wants earth back. Would humans survive? The writing style is pretty simple but the beautiful thing about the blog is the attention to even the smallest detail. The blog archive has been titled "Previous Pages" and Label list as "Chapters". Even the footer has "Chapter" in place of the usual "Label" or "Under Categories". This is the youngest blog with only 4 posts for now with 1 post per week but the story seems quite promising and is interesting to read.

Blogging Doesn't Count as a Job?

When I first retired, just a year ago, two of my goals were to complete my memoirs and to write a novel. The memoirs have languished so far; just random bits and pieces of memories-some painful-set down on paper but not organized, and nowhere near completion. I wrote the novel-in thirty days-when, along with several thousand other "writers," I participated in National Novel Writing Month in November 2007. Those 50,000 words, although a complete story, still need lots of editing. I've barely begun that process and it has been several months now.

I have long deluded myself that I was deprived of the joy of writing because of my career and family priorities. Procrastination was the real reason. Whether fear of failure or fear of success, I never pushed myself to get to work. I would finally have the time when I retired-that was my plan.

So now, each morning in retirement, I first complete all my chores around the house so I can get to the computer. I sign in with the best of intentions to write something "good" but first I check e-mails, review counter "hits" on blogs, read private messages on social sites. See what my "friends" and "favorites" have been saying and doing (which usually doesn't amount to much more than what I am saying and doing). What am I doing? Has this become my job?

Originally, joining social networking sites and blogging was just kind of the cool thing to do because you see others doing it. (Now doesn't that sound like something teenagers do?) So, one blog leads to another, one social site membership leads to another. Before long, I started to feel like all my time was being spent in front of the computer. Wow. That sounds a lot like my job before I retired. And that's it, partly. Isn't it? Wanting to feel like you have something to accomplish every day? In retirement, I thing many of us fight the feeling of uselessness, of not contributing anymore. And as blogging and social networking begins to take up more and more of my time, I start to think of it as my job. Just wasting time? I wonder.

My wife wonders too, first of all, why I would want to share my life and thoughts with "just anyone" out in the world. Secondly, she wonders why anyone "out there" would care? Who reads these blog "things" she asks? And I reply that I don't know. "Just other people like me, I guess. People with too much time on their hands, or folks who make believe, as I am, that they are actually accomplishing something." So as I have second thoughts about how I am spending the hours and days of my life...here in late middle age...wow, I am 61...perhaps it is fortunate for me that I have a spouse who cares, who questions, who challenges, who doesn't just walk away and let me sit here, day after day, with the remaining days of my life. We do deserve more.

I live in one of the best places in the country. So now I have resolved to get outside and do something active every day. I will schedule fitness into my routine. I have many home do-it-myself projects that need doing. I have grandchildren to take on hikes, and adult sons to take camping and flyfishing and golfing. So I must limit my participation in Facebook, MySpace, WindowsLive, Gaia, Blogger, Eons, YouTube, Blurb, Pageflakes, Popfly, Yahoo360, iGoogle, Buzzdash, Mahalo and Wiki(anything). Can you imagine? Look at all these "sites!" That's where my life is spent. ("Spent" is a good word here, if you think about it.) I don't think there is anything wrong with participating in any of these sites; but if THIS IS ALL I DO-well, I'm not "doing" much.

No more soft life just sitting around for me. I will be working harder on living hard.

How to Write Good Blogs That are Not Boring

What makes the difference between a good blog and a bad blog on the Internet? What makes someone keep going back to a blog or never go back again? The content is usually the reason for a blog being successful or not. Writing blogs does not have to be a difficult task and it does not have to be a time consuming task.

What you need to know about writing blogs is that it is important to keep the content fresh and updated. Nobody likes to read information on blogs that is not informative, relevant or that is not well written. Writing blogs is similar to keeping an online journal that keeps people informed about various topics and up to date on information that you want to share.

When you are going to be writing blogs, the thing that you should consider is to keep the information accurate and recent. Use proper grammar and sentence structure and make the information easy to read and understand by visitors. Keep your thoughts focused when writing blogs. No one likes to read a blog where the information is hard to read or does not make sense.

Writing blogs can be a great way to connect people and create communities for those who have similar interests and want to learn about different topics. Keep your blogs full of intelligent, accurate information and you will find that writing blogs can be both fun and informative.

If you really want to find people to connect to, be descriptive and write what you really want others to know about you and the topic you are writing on. If you write informative and creative blogs, you will find that people appreciate what you are writing.

Look Here for Public Domains

Believe it or not, there’s actually some method to the search madness when looking for public domain materials to use in your business. The search engines have a hard time trying to organize the information precisely because the Internet is so decentralized and vast. In this scenario, the expert searcher does not rely on Google; he relies on specific search strategies.

The debate however, rages on about where to find public domain works: On the Internet or in the real world, sifting through libraries and stores holding old books? The answer, of course, is two-pronged: You can use both avenues to supplement your research, find a public domain title via the Internet and acquire through a real-world search. Alternatively, you can also download some public domain works from the Internet, and despite what people might tell you, finding public domain works in bookstores and libraries is quite easy.

In searching for public domain material you can use:

The Search Engines

A search engine can only point you to the general direction of public domain repositories, and as such should only be used if you don’t have any previous leads on a market.

Niche Directories

This is a little better, as directories allow you to find niche-specific information. The only problem here is that some directories may not have the same breadth of information as the search engine might have, and as such you may miss out on a lot of decent public domain works.

Government Websites

If you are looking to use government publications as your target public domain resource, then the Internet is your haven. Most, if not all, government publications find their way online and very quickly, as well. This is excellent news for anyone wishing to use such information as content for their website, or as part of their services.

Online Libraries

This is where it starts to get interesting, while most online libraries will consist of recent to moderately old books, you can find many fantastic public domain resources here. The best part is that many local libraries have started creating online portals, and you can search in your local library before actually heading over.

If that is not the case, the best you can do is to find the relevant public domain work and once you have a title and author, search for it online .

Great Ideas for Using Public Works and Profiting From It

Re-publish public domain content . A lot of the information is relevant today. Books on recipes, public speaking, hobbies and learning languages all contain knowledge that is applicable to our time (50 or 60 years don’t change the way you bake a cake, for example). All you need to do is to find the relevant public domain work, re- package it according to your needs and then create a business model around it.

Use Public Domain as a source of content for your website. Whether you want to start a membership website or just an informational website that earns money through advertising and affiliate revenue, the important thing is that you won’t have to wait for months to create the content , it’s ready for you to use immediately.

Create a derivative work . Use the public domain work to spawn targeted, niche- relevant products by creating your own product around it.

Change the format of the public domain work , create an audio course for a how-to- manual to increase the ‘perceived value’ of the product so you can make more money off the same information.

Release the product in multiple, complimentary mediums. This is a combination of the above two ideas . You can teach a course using audio CDs, instructional watch- and-learn DVDs and package a learning manual together to make a killer course that is a physical product instead of allowing people to simply download your book. This immediately raises the value of what you’re selling.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There dozens and dozens of concrete examples of using public domain works within your business, either to supplement your business model or to create a new income stream.

Some people say that because the information in the public domain is limited, there’s no point in going after the ‘public domain riches’. In fact, there has never been a better time to start. What you should concentrate on is to find new ways to market old ideas. How can you do that?

Differentiate your product . Instead of selling old and rare books, work on building a niche for yourself on old philosophical works only. This is a very viable business idea and I’ll tell you how in a little while.

Find new ways to sell an existing product . The usual example given here is to convert an eBook or how-to course into a series of audio tapes or videos. However, you can also take an existing public domain work and split it up into several parts, and sell them separately, a public domain work on poker strategies could be divided into 3 parts , poker games, poker history and poker strategies.

Remember: Create a new product out of an old idea

Free Public Domains are So Profitable

Many public domain works include (nearly) timeless and entirely relevant information on wildly popular ‘interests’ such as making money, self- improvement, writing, playing sports, interpreting dreams, astrology, public speaking, entrepreneurship, recipes and lots more. The information is immediately usable for many public domain works all you need to do is to simply do some minor editing, re-package the knowledge into a medium of your liking (we’ll discuss this in more detail a little later) and then sell it. Of course, you can also produce derivative works, but the power of immediate re-usability is one of the primary reasons many people are attracted to the public domain.

There is an abundance of such information. We’re talking about publications that span over a century, and maybe even more than that when you take into account classic works that were published before copyright law even existed. Use of a particular public domain work by someone else does not mean that you cannot use that same public domain work for your own commercial purpose. In other words, you can use the SAME public domain resources that someone else has used, and restructure them to suit your commercial venture. This is the real strength of the public domain . The information is not a resource that is ‘used up’ over time . In fact as more and more people begin to embrace the ‘free information’ movement (and the open source movement in software development), you will find that the public domain will only increase in size over time.

Public Domain works are in diverse mediums. You have software, books, instruction manuals, photographs, music and even government publications. Any and all of these mediums can be used to generate specific and different types of selling opportunities.

Public Domain works are not restricted in the format they are stored. Thus you can convert a book on interpreting dreams into an audio course, or create a website around a book on public speaking. This is more of a ‘how to profit from public domain works’ feature, but it’s important enough to note here. There are many different reasons that public domain works are profitable. But essentially, the main reason is that they allow you to quickly and inexpensively start an ever ending info product business online with very little effort.

Monetize Your Blog with These Useful Tips

Once you have started blogging and after you've made a few entries into your blog, its time to monetize your blog. This means you'll be making specific changes to your blog in order to make money. One of the most popular ways to gain income from a blog is by using a contextual advertising program, like BlogAds,
Google Adsense
or Chitika. These contextual advertising will pays you for each time a reader clicks on one of the advertising links on your blog page.

Once signing with the advertising program, you will place these ads on your blog page that relates to your Blog Topic.
For example, if you have a blog on grants and write an article about apply for grants, the ads appearing next to that article will have to do with grant or funding. They might be links to government sites,or private parties advertising their services.

One thing to note with contextual advertising is that you won't have to worry about placing the ads yourself each day. Once you enter the code on your blog, the program will automatically refresh the advertising when you make a new post. You will be paid several cents for each click. It doesn't seem like a lot per click, but it sure does add up quickly.

Contextual advertising is just one way to make money from your blog. You can also make product recommendations and suggest information products to your readers. Join their affiliate program, then each and every time someone buys a product you recommend, you will get a commission. Many bloggers find that making gentle product recommendations throughout their blogs are a way to make extra income.

Finally, some companies will pay bloggers to create posts that suggest certain products or services. These companies pay a few dollars per post, and are fairly easy to use.

Blog and Work-at-Home Tips for Profit

If your dream is to work at home or make extra money, then get started by blogging. As I continue to learn, blogging is one of the best ways to start a work at home business because it is so easy to get is started and going. Blogging takes time to build up a good profit level. With time and attention, your (or blogs) will grow into a nice work at home business. I am currently learning by trial and error.

When you are blogging for profit, you'll want to pay close attention to how you present your blog. There are millions of blogs out there, and there may be several thousands of blogs that are related to your topic. If your readers can't understand your blog and have trouble reading it, they'll just move on to the next one. The following tips can make your blog more user-friendly and help you gain readers.

First, put your blog in the right format. Readers want to understand how your blog works right from the start. Most blogging platforms have similar formats, with links and tags on the left or right margin, and the most recent post on top. Make sure to use the links wisely. Only put links up for blogs or content that is related to your blog's topic. This will give your readers additional information on your topic. Keep your list short and sweet.

When choosing your blog's background and font color, its best to stick with a light background and dark text. Studies have shown that the human brain can process this type of format better than light text on a dark background. Think about this before you commit to a black background and white text. It might look striking, but readers might not want to stay there for long. Also, use a solid background color instead of trying to use a pattern or design.

Proofread your entries before you post them to your blog. Check for commonly misspelled words and grammatical errors.

Keep your blog fresh and interesting by posting daily if you can. With so much information available on the Internet, your readers may go elsewhere if you aren't supplying daily content. If you aren't sure what to write about, just look at the news, a link to another blog, comment on a news story or post of list of helpful tips. Not every post has to be long and complicated, but you do need to post something everyday.

These tips will help keep your blogs interesting to your visitors. The more visitors you get, the more profit you will make. Just make sure to present yourself in a professional way and keep your readers coming back for more new content each day.
