How to Use Internet to Record Your Health Goals

By setting specific measures on your goals and accurately tracking your performance each day, you reinforce the changes to your health and well-being (like incorporating healthy choices and maintaining a positive mental attitude) and make it easy to refer to when you need to revise goals. Jotting down notes related to your activity is also helpful. For example, did you feel especially hungry on a given day? Tired? Angry? Were certain exercises extremely difficult to do, or was a certain activity impossible to continue because of fatigue? Knowing what worked for you and what didn't can help you plan a more realistic and successful plan.

One easy way to keep track of your diet and exercise is online at a Web site like FitDay or MyFoodDiary, which is only $9 per month. The Web site MapMyRun allows you to map your biking or jogging routes and change them and save them according to the distance. If you want something that you can hold in your hand that's already laid out for you, a company called BodyMinder sells journals for recording anything related to exercise and diet. Look in the fitness section in any bookstore for different choices to see what fits your needs best.

Bling Issues on Social Sites

I had someone request a friends hook up on a site I belong to the other day and I tried to check out their profile a number of times and each time it jammed up my computer. I cleaned off my computer, got rid of temporary files and such, to see if that was the problem. My kids are on here a lot and they don't understand how to do that yet. In case you don't these are the steps to clean out your computer.

Got to the control panel in your start menu.

Click on performance and maintenance.

Click on free up space. A little box will pop up and it will be calculating what you can clear out. Then a box will pop up with a list and how much is in each thing on the list. It usually automatically checks the boxes for you but if you would like to keep any of it then you can uncheck the boxes.

Click ok and then it clears it off.

You can also clear off your browser with these steps.

Click on tools on your browser bar.

Click internet options

Under browser history, click delete.

Then areas you would like to delete or delete all, then click ok when the box comes up.

Back to my story, I went in and tried again to look at the profile, sure enough it jammed up again. So when I got back out and went to clean off the files again I had picked up over 12,000 MB of temporary files, just from their profile. After 11 tries I finally helped them figure out what the problem was. Can you believe it was too much bling on their page?

Do you people realize that each application you run on your profile page has to load separately? You wonder why people aren't trying to hook up but maybe you are just making impossible for them to see you at all. I was taught that in order to sell online, which is pretty much what most of these social sites are for, you are selling you, the page needs to load quickly. People don't want to wait for the ad to come up. If it's taking too long then they will stop the load and go back to a quicker one. I have done it myself. Adding all this bling and crap on your profile does not always attract attention. Sometimes it keeps you from getting it. Whatever happen to the good old days when a profile was just a profile and not graffiti and other flashy stuff?

I don't need someone to stop by and leave me stickers, a simple hello is good for me, or a how are you, something simpler than a huge sticker with flashing lights. I see you ok, you don't have to scream at me. If you want more attention you may want to tone down your bling so people can actually see who you are. It's fun but who are you under all those lights and flashy things? Sometimes the lights are so bright it's blinding.

Another thing that gets annoying is the auto play with music on profiles. I have mine like that so I can't complain much, but if I don't watch it, I go to see a friend and out blast this music that makes me jump out of my seat. Someone's page actually blew my speakers the other day. I am sure it didn't help that my daughter was online and she is into some pretty hard core rock and has the speakers too loud, but still. Wow, how much more can we say about ourselves? We're flashy and loud.

Pretty soon our whole language will be blinged up along with our profiles and some where underneath it all will be us, the users of the internet. Eventually someone will find us and tell us how to navigate through all the lights, flashing, music and get out of the bling to find the world of people we never got to see.

Five of my Favourite Websites

Yahoo Answers

“Yahoo! Answers is a new way to find and share information. You can ask questions on any topic, get answers from real people, and share your insights.” So basically, you answer other peoples question (if you want) and ask your own. Your almost always guaranteed a few answers from the millions of people that use this website every day. I know it's a popular website, but a surprising number of the people around me don't know about it, so I thought I would share it with everyone.

Free Rice

This is a very neat site, in more ways than one. If you have children that want to learn, or you yourself want to brush up on your vocabulary, and all the while helping to put an end to world hunger, than this website is for you. Sounds strange right? This is how it works. Every time they give you a word, and you click on the right definition, they will donate 20 grains of rice to the needy. How can they afford this? The ads on the page create a net-income every new question, and that's what they use to buy rice with. The cool thing about this is that the website tests you to find out your vocabulary level, so it will always be a challenging/education experience. I've donated 12,000 grains before, how many can you?

Free Flour

This is much like the before mentioned website, free rice, except with flour.

They donate a spoon of flour for every correct answer (10 spoonfuls = A bun, 100 spoonfuls = a loaf of bread)

They test you with questions about geography (capitals of every country)

Surf The Channel

This is a nice little clone of the old tv-links, only better. You can watch almost any show, anime, movie, or cartoon at this site 100% for free. It's streaming, so basically you watch it without downloading it. Pretty neat.

Gaming Lagoon

Here is a neat little site where you can earn video games/memberships etc. You sign up with that link (with honest information, so they can send you prizes), and you being completing “offers” (basically surveys). For every offer you complete, you get a certain amount of points. Once you have enough points for whatever you are interested in, you order it from that site, and they will ship it to your door. I've done it before and it does work.

-I hope this article becomes popular, then more people can help with donations-

Great User-Submitted Art Websites You Must Explore

The Poster List

The Poster List is a in-house design and poster distributor. The posters are unique, edgy and different than any you've seen before. From custom Barack Obama political posters to posters paying homage to super 8mm film cameras, this is a favorite and a must see.

Threadless

Threadless is a user submitted tee shirt and hooded shirt website. The great thing about Threadless is that all the shirts that get printed have to be voted on, so what you can order are usually the best of the best. You can submit your own designs to threadless, and if it gets printed, you get a nice little chunk of cash and could see others wearing your shirt!

Threadless has some great shirts, with vibrant colors, comical messages, or simplistic style. Many of the submitters are freelance graphic designers, leaving most of the shirts looking fresh and new, instead of the rehashed tees we see on most websites. If you see a design on Threadless that you like, order it quick because they tend to sell out quickly.

Cafe Press

The advantages of cafepress is that anyone can submit almost anything! Tee shirts, posters, stationary? Not hard to find on Cafepress. There is an enormous database of almost any style or design. Political, Avant-Garde, Humorous, Design oriented and so much more.

Cafepress is also a great way to share your art with others and make some money doing it. On cafepress you don't have to worry about printing up your shirts or shipping, you just design them and take a cut.

Vimeo

As I've talked about before, ditch YouTube and move to vimeo.com. On vimeo you can upload and view high definition, full resolution and native aspect ratio without youtube stretching and warping your films!

Vimeo also has a much better community and you will find less of the video bloggers and more art.

I wrote a full article comparing Vimeo to youtube, if your interested in learning more about vimeo or the differences between the two, check out the article

Deviant Art

I feel like Deviant Art has been around since the internet began. I've submitted to Deviant Art for probably ten years. DeviantArt is a great place to show off your design skills and a great place to catch new trends on their way out of the underground.

It's easy to spend hours browsing the gamut of different styles of graphic design, from realism to vector. You can even order prints!

Uneetee

Uneetee has some of the coolest tee shirt designs on the net. They are all original, extremely edgy shirts you won't find in stores. Most have a powerful and strong message or are heavily thematic.

The shirts are prices well and they are user submission based. If you think your designs are great, submit a shirt, you can get $1500 and $2 royalty per shirt sold!

Triond

Triond is a great place to go to find original articles about everything from cooking rice to backpacking through Thailand.

The site publishes articles to it's affiliate sites, has a great standard of excellence and is a constant source of new material coming out on the internet.

Users can also post videos and audio to Triond's affiliates, so don't think it's just writing! And if you would like to be more than a passive consumer of art, try writing for them, it's extremely easy to use and they have great support, oh and did I mention you get paid?

User submitted art is great. Seeing real people, not a group of advertising gurus, coming up with and distributing real designs over the internet, thats a technological pinnacle. Enjoy these sites and others, because Nike and Gucci aren't the only designers making apparel.

How Safe are You on the Internet 1: Personal Safety

If you're reading this, then I'm guessing that you're on the internet right now, right this very second. Innocently, reading these words, skipping ahead and clicking that little “I Like It” button, you know the one. How safe do you think you are? Do you think you're secure? Well think again. Everyone is in danger, there's no way to take that away, but it is possible to prevent you from becoming a victim of it. A potential paedophile may lurk behind every happy hyperlink you click, a suspicious scam hiding behind that attractive advertisement. Are you really, really safe? I'm going to talk in detail about internet safety, and hopefully I'm going to prepare you for anything unwanted on the internet.

IM (MSN, Yahoo, AOL)

Isn't Instant Messaging great? In seconds you can talk to all your friends with a few clicks and some simple typing, and you don't have to go through all the hassle of using the phone or tediously sending e-mails. But how can you be sure they're all your friends?

Check Your Buddy List

How many people on there do you know? How many people do you not know? Do you trust the people you don't know? Why not? How can you be sure that anyone who you don't know isn't a paedophile? One sure-fire way of doing this is making them go on webcam, if they make an excuse such as “Oh sorry it's broken” or “I've lost it” then don't believe it instantly. Also, webcam images can actually be faked, so what you're seeing might not be what is actually there. You could ask your friend (someone who you trust and know in real life) if they know who the person is. Of course, I'm not saying you shouldn't have friends who you don't know in real life, but you should be more wary around them and if you feel uncomfortable with them, block/delete them.

“ASL”?

The term “ASL” stands for “Age, Sex, Location” and is often used when trying to get to know someone. My advice is to never give this information out. Just ask yourself, why are they asking? If they're a paedophile then this is going to be practically everything they want to know. “Are you a child? Are you the opposite gender of me? Where can I find you?” You just shouldn't give it out, it's not safe.

“Zomg dere's a piccy of u naked @ http://somewebsite.com/"

If someone says this to you, then it's most probably a virus. Viruses can take control of a computer and make it send unwanted messages, such as the above. These will usually include a link or be followed by an attempted file transfer. You can usually tell that these are viruses if the URL of the website doesn't end in .jpg, .png, .gif or any other known picture format or if the file they're trying to send is a .rar or .zip or even .exe. There are many variations of this so just watch out, just to make sure you could call your friend to see if they're being serious or not.

Big Conversations

Be careful with these, it's possible to have a conversation between several people at once, and anyone in the conversation can add anyone they want who is on their contact list. This means that people who you don't know may be listening in on what you say. So, either be very careful about what you say, or just leave the conversation. If you wouldn't shout it out in a crowded room filled with people you don't know then don't say it on here.

Reporting

If someone is being sexually “weird” with you or abusing and insulting you then you should report it as soon as possible. To do this just click the button circled in the screenshot below:

And then follow the instructions given. It might also help if you save the offending conversation so that you can use it as evidence.

Social Networking Sites (Bebo, MySpace, Facebook)

Social Networking Sites are great aren't they? They allow you to, um, what do they allow you to do? Oh yeah they let you put up personal information so that you can meet strangers. They let you put up pictures of yourself so that people can see them, and they let you tell other people everything about you. Your profile could be a strangers target.

What Information Should I Give Out?

Well, the safest thing would be to not give out any information. But of course, that takes away the entire purpose of a social profile. Things that shouldn't be too much of a problem are:

First name

Country of residence

Gender

Things which could potentially cause you unwanted abuse are:

Pictures

Hobbies

Full Address

Last Name

School you go to

E-Mail Address

Mobile Phone Number

Age

Sexual Orientation

Religion

If you have a social profile, look at it. Now. Think to yourself, if you were someone who wanted to stalk/rape/insult you, would you be able to?

Make your Profile Private

This will only take a few seconds but seriously, it'll be worth it. It'll provide so much more security of your online presence. Do it.

Your Friends Profiles

Just because your profile cannot be accessed, some of your friends profiles may be accessible. If you leave a comment on your friends profile such as “Oh yeah Alton Towers is gonna be wicked! Can't wait till next Saturday.” then people will be able to see a picture of you next to the comment and they will be able to locate you, having a time and a place. Just be careful, advise them to make there profiles private too.

Other

Are you a hip and trendy YouTuber? Well if so, do any of your videos have a street sign in them? If so then stalkers might be able to track you down. You might wave it aside as just another piece of useless information, but if someone pieces all the pieces together then they could build up a pretty good portfolio on you.

For further more in-depth information about this here are some pretty useful websites:

Reading Room

Get Safe Online

CEOP

Think U Know

I know, this article may have seemed quite boring to you, but it's important. It's very important that you pay attention to this article, internet crime is on the rise and you need to be secure. Pass this on to your friends too, they need to know (no, this isn't just a way for me to cheekily get more views). The next part of this will be “How Safe Are You On The Internet? Part Two: PC Security” and will be about virus, hackers, firewalls etc. Very interesting.

Generating Website Traffic Through Social Networking Sites 2

In my previous article, "How To Generate More Traffic To Any Website", I detailed some tips on how to get started with building instant and long term traffic to your webpage. Now let's discuss some ways on how to generate traffic using a very lucrative but often untapped source of website visitors: Social Networking Sites.

The beauty of social networking sites is that you encounter REAL people instead of statisitics and empty hits or clicks. There is more warmth and human aspect in these social sites. You can really connect with thousands of real people. Not only do you get a chance to promote your site, people see YOU as a person as well.

Anyway, enough for introductions. Here are my tips for website generation.

Start With Myspace, then expand to other social networking sites - Ok, there are many ways, more than a hundred ways to get more traffic from Myspace. First, develop a cool, interesting profile page. This is important. Make sure that your profile appeals to your target market. If the website you're promoting is about weight loss, make sure you include some mention of your weight loss passion somewhere in your profile.

Myspace Tip # 1

Participate in the Myspace forum frequently. Don't blatantly promote your website there! Just contribute articles, give comments abbout relevant topics, answer replies, and so on. As you do this, you will notice that lots of people are sending you personal messages and friend requests.I've experienced this myself. Remember, your goal at this point is to GET MORE PEOPLE INTO YOUR FRIENDS LIST.

MySpace Tip # 2

As soon as you get a considerable number of people on your buddy list, use the bulletin post feature at least twice to thrice a week. There is no rule that says you cannot promote or advertise your website using the Myspace bulletin feature. So bulletin posts can actually serve as your commercial advertisements. Buyer beware: repetitive posting of the same topic or announcement is seen by Myspace as SPAM and might be grounds for termination of your account.

MySpace Tip # 3

Post Videos On Your MySpace Profile. Now this could really explode your traffic if you have a video that generates user interest then sucks them directly to your main website. Just how much can VIRAL VIDEO do for you? Well, it depends. There are overnight sensations and Youtube/Myspace stars. There are also videos that turn into a flop. Here's the criteria for a succesful Myspace viral video: 1) It must be relevant to the topic of your main website, 2) it must display your website link on the video itself. 3) the video must generate viewer interest by either being funny, controversial, or mind stimulating

Myspace Tip # 4

Use the Myspace blog. Post your website link at the end of each blog post. Each time you update your Myspace blog, your friends list is notified and some of them will hop into your new blog post instantly. Then a great percentage of these readers will check out your website link as well. Keep your blog posts light, easy and simple. Don't forget the KISS concept (Keep It Simple Stupid). If you go above people's heads, who will enjoy reading your posts?

Ok, we have outlined some specific tips on how to generate traffic using social networking sites, particularly Myspace. You can use the same concepts mentioned above in similar sites like Friendster, Multiply, Everyone's Connected and Tagged. There's really not enough space here to discuss each social networking site, so to save time, I primarily discussed MySpace because its the most popular among them all.

In my next articles, I will discuss Youtube, and how you can use it and similar video sharing sites to bring more traffic to your webpage. We will also discuss other ways to bring a horde of traffic to your blog, business page, or personal website.

Six Websites You Should Visit Every Day

Blackle

Blackle is exactly like Google except the page background is black instead of white, the idea being that black backgrounds require less energy to present on a monitor than white ones do. Although this amount of energy is small, to date Blackle has saved over 500,000 Watt hours, so why not do your part and help to conserve energy?

FreeRice

FreeRice is a great website that donates 20 grains of rice to those in need whenever you get a question right in their word game. They pay for the rice through the advertisements you see at the bottom whenever you answer a question. On an average day, over 100 million grains of rice are donated and almost 25 billion have been donated to date, so this website makes a big difference and doesn't require much effort from you at all (it's even fun!).

The Hunger Site

The Hunger Site is a lot like FreeRice but quicker (although it donates less). All you do is go to the website and click the button that says “Click Here to Give - It's Free!” The website is sponsored by people who donate a certain amount of food for every click, and as of March 2008, over 500 million cups of food have been donated. Additionally, there are tabs up at the top that offer the same service for breast cancer, children's health, literacy, animal rescue, and the rainforest, allowing you to pick and choose what you want to support (if not all).

Cracked

Cracked updates very frequently with numerous things guaranteed to tickle your funny bone, including blog posts and homemade videos, but the biggest draw here by far are the daily lists. Every day of the week, Cracked features a new list of something wacky and irreverent (example: The 5 Most Ridiculous Lies You Were Taught in History Class). The best part about them is that they're completely true and insightful, uncovering things you may not have known before so you learn while you laugh.

Digg

Most of you are probably familiar with Digg, the website where users submit stories found from around the web and vote for the ones they like the most, subsequently making them more likely to be looked at by other users. Why should you visit Digg every day? Because thousands of brand new, interesting articles are posted all over the internet every day, and using Digg will allow you to see the cream of the crop. It's like a greatest hits collection of the internet.

RedFlagDeals

RedFlagDeals updates several times a day with the newest sales, deals, and coupons for some of the hottest retailers around. Next time you are considering buying an expensive piece of electronics, you should definitely scout this website out for items that could save you hundreds of dollars. Additionally, make sure to check out the Freebies section, which offers everything from free food samples to free magazine subscriptions.
