Five Good Addons for Firefox

Stumbleupon

Stumbleupon is a toolbar which is added to your browser which links to a community of millions who have also got the addon. When you first download the addon it will take you through a registration process where you outline you interests in quite a lot of detail. When you then click on the "Stumble!" button in your browser it takes you to a random website bookmarked by another user which matches to your interests. This is a fantastic service which has found me all my favourite sites and services.

Sxipper

There are many addons with a similar purpose to sxipper but I have found it to be the best. Sxipper is a secure addon where you record all your information, usernames and passwords, addresses - both physical and email and when you are confronted with a form, say for registering to a new website it can automatically fill in all your information for you. It can also be used to automatically log into services you ahev already registered for.

ForecastFox

Although many may think this is a trivial addon I have found it extremely useful and very accurate. The weather forecast service is provided by accuweather a global weather forecaster. You simply register your location and change whatever options you want to change your view and you have an accurate weather forecast for the next few days and even a picture from a satellite of your area (not very useful but it certainly looks good)

Noscript

For those who need the more security than even firefox can provide, Noscript is the addon for you. It prevents unknown websites using potentially malicious software such as java, javascript and flash on websites you view. Their motto is "there is a browser safer than firefox. It's Firefox with Noscript!"

Interclue

Interclue allows you to see through a link and see whats on the next page without actually going there. It provides a summary of the page in a small box and allows you to quickly see what is on the next page.

Firefox has many useful addons and the above five certainly excel in their categories and I fully recommend them to you just as I recommend you get Firefox.

Voila! The Six Most Dazzling Things About the Internet

Torrent Downloads

The world of Torrents is quite fascinating. Never before has watching the full season rerun of Mcgyver or Baywatch become SO possible! By installing simple software called "torrent readers" such as uTorrent, you can download just about ANYTHING from popular and safe torrent sites such as Mininova.org and Isohunt.com. This way, you can download movies, music and other stuff.

There are some controversies about the legality of downloading torrents. Many say that it is illegal, unethical and just plain sneaky. Well, let me clear things out for you. Torrent downloading is NOT PIRACY all in itself. It is originally created as a way for people to share stuff (also called P2P sharing and is not considered piracy, but there are boundaries). As long as you don't commercialize and reproduce the stuff you downloaded, you'll be fine. Moreover, in torrent downloading, there is a required activity called "seeding". Seeding is the act of "re-uploading" the stuff that you have downloaded. In a way, when you "seed" stuff, you're like saying "I do not own this, I just borrowed it".

Video Streaming Sites

The rise of video streaming sites such as Youtube, Metacafe, AOL Video, Imeem, and Myspace video has totally changed the internet, and people's lives, during the past decade. Not only can people show themselves and their own footages to the world, videos have made the internet a more exciting place. Whether you watch and upload videos for pleasure, entertainment, business, advertising, social awareness, etc., you cannot deny that it's fun!

Social Networking Sites

The internet has now countless ways for people to interact with each other. 100 years ago, this would have not been possible! Today, almost everyone has a "virtual version" of himself or herself online: the online profile! The reign of Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Everyones Connected and many other similar social networking sites has given people a variety of options to interact and connect with people around the world.

Making Money Online

Perhaps one the "best of the best" things about the internet is that you can use it to make sideline income. Many people even go as far as making a primary income online. There are many ways by which a person can make money online. He or she can try online auctions, such as Ebay. Many people earn money by retailing products and used stuff on Ebay. Others venture to blogging. When you blog, you can get paid many ways: you can earn from Google Adsense revenues, site sponsors, and referrals. Some pro bloggers I know have discovered so many ways to earn from their blog and they also figured out how to drive massive amounts of blog traffic. Meanwhile, other people venture to internet marketing, or selling both digital and tangible products online.

Search Engines and Instant Information

Google search is something that people never had one hundred years ago. In older days, people had to go to the library and make their research (I'm not saying that going to the library is a useless thing to do now). Today, most of us can enjoy the convenience of getting the information we are looking for by a simple click of a finger. In fact, the term "googling" is a new word that has been coined only during the past ten years. The word describes the speed by which information can be gathered at lightning speed.

Email and Messenger Services

Never underestimate the power of email. It has made the communication of human beings faster and more up to date. Although it has quite affected the "snail mail" or post office industry, email it has been a very important part of our lives, and one of the main communication tools in modern society.

Messenger services are fascinating, too. In the past, making long distance calls is a big deal. Today, you can do it for FREE using messenger services such as Yahoo and MSN Messenger. Thank goodness, if you're kinda lost when you're trying to figure out international codes, country codes and area codes, you can save yourself the trouble by going online and making the call via instant messenger (just make sure you have a decent headset, in which case, you have to read "Cool Headset Designs For Computer Freaks").

To wrap things up, let me say, Voila! The internet saved the day.

Making Firefox Run Like Never Before

At some point in your internet life, I'm sure you've wondered how to speed up your connection. Myself, I prefer to take the free approach wherever possible, so today I am going to show you how to get your Firefox install trucking along at a much happier pace. Without further delay...

First things first, you should be doing this in another tab, that way you can make your changes and check back here to see what the next change to make is (just in case you didn't know, you can press CTRL+T to open a new tab). So go ahead and open yourself a new tab, and in the address bar (F6) you want to type in

about:config

After continuing past the warning that will more than likely show up, you will be confronted with a staggering amount of information and options. Welcome to the in-browser method of editing Firefox's configuration files. This is a fairly simple procedure so I won't go into too much detail, but if you notice the filter box at the top of the webpage, you will be using that to make to locate the lines you need to change, or maybe enter if they don't already exsist. So for starters, let's make this list a bit more manageable, shall we?

Filter for: pipe

Once you filter for pipe, it should narrow down to just a few options, quite possibly even less then I describe here, but not to worry, Firefox is nice and easy to add new rules to. First things first, look for the following options:

network.http.pipelining------------------------>Set to true

network.http.pipelining.firstrequest------------------------>Set to true

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests ------------------------>Set to 32

network.http.proxy.pipelining------------------------>Set to true

Once you have found the entry I've outlined, doubleclick on it to change it from the default to what I outlined here. If any of them are not present, you just need to right click in the window and go to NEW, then pick the type of entry. A string entry is used when your value is in words or letters, use integer if you are adding a number, and finally use boolean if you have a yes/no option to pass in.

More things to change/add are the following:

nglayout.initialpaint.delay------------------------>Set to 0

ui.submenuDelay------------------------>Set to 0

plugin.expose_full_path------------------------>Set to true

content.notify.backoffcount------------------------>Set to 5

browser.cache.memory.capacity------------------------>*********

(Please note that with this paticular entry, you will have to make a judgement call based on how much memory you have in your computer. If you have around a gigabyte of RAM, I'd recommend setting this to something 49152. If you've got even less, you might want to consider 24576. I'm writing this on a notebook with 2 gigs of RAM, so I use 65536. If you find your computer slow to a crawl after applying these settings, you've set this too high, turn it down to something your computer will more readily accept.)

I think I've given you enough changes to have a fairly noticable change in your browsing speed. To apply these changes, you'll need to quit and restart Firefox. Once you've done that, you'll notice those changes you made kick in instantly. Enjoy your speedy "new" connection!

Google Chrome: Beta

Google just released a new web browser they had been working on for about 2 years now. It was said that when Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7, Google got very serious about the web browser and how to improve it and make it better than any web browser our there!
I myself have personally reviewed this web browser, and it is indeed fast, as it is only in the BETA stag, things such as IRC support, Add-ons, and Plug-ins are still not built into the browser. They may release the support and few other extra's when it finalizes the real launch. But for now you can download it on the Google homepage, they have a "New!" sign right next to it.

It's been on the news it quite a lot of places, who knows, maybe Google will be releasing an Auction website soon enough and it may over take eBay over time. The official BETA release date was September 2, 2008 11:59:59 PM. Right now they do not know the actual launch date of the new web browser, but there is websites where you can keep up to date on what is happening.

When you install Google Chrome, you have the choice to choose if you want to send crash reports and other things to Google if the program crashes so they can fix it. Some people agree that it is nice they allow you the option to choose.

I hope this helps you in making a good choice on which web browser to shoot for, thanks for reading.

The Internet Browser Wars: Four Reasons Why Firefox Outruns Explorer

Your choice of browser can totally change your internet experience. As a person who spends lots of time online, I have observed that little advantageous features in my preferred browser often save me more time and effort. On the other hand, minor browser bugs can annoy the most patient of internet users.

Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are two of the most reliable internet browsers on the planet. But here are some reasons why I think Firefox has a slight "winning edge" over Explorer:

Firefox Has The "Restore Session" Feature

In the event of a power outage, or if your computer stops responding, you can just exit and restart Firefox (don't restart your computer). When you relaunch Firefox, you will be given a choice to "Restore Session". When you choose this option, you will be taken back to any webpage you have been browsing before(including password protected pages).

Easier Access To Browsing History

With Internet Explorer, finding the 'browsing history' section is like finding the Holy Grail. I mean it! With Firefox, there's a highly conspicuous, separate tab fully devoted to your browsing history. In case you get lost while browsing 10,000 pages in an hour, you can just visit the 'History' section and toggle between pages that you have visited before. And yes, with Firefox it's easier to delete your history archives.

The Mozilla Firefox Interface Is Less Cluttered

Have you noticed that Internet Explorer sometimes takes longer to load than Firefox? This is because Explorer has more tabs/features/add-ons, and this is not necessarily good. When users browse online, majority of them don't care how many features are available on the browser. They just want to check their email, watch some Youtube videos, read the news etc...whatever they wanna do, they wanna do it faster!

Another thing, the Internet Explorer interface takes up too much screen space. Firefox is a breath of fresh air. It is less cluttered with features that you don't need anyway. There's more room for the webpage itself. (To be fair to computer geeks, Internet Explorer has more features to spend time with and explore on).

Firefox Automatically Opens .PDF Files -- No Need To Download

Online reports and e-books are pretty much popular online. These kinds of files frequently come in .PDF format (a file that can only be opened with Adobe Reader). With Internet Explorer, you cannot read .PDF files online. You need to download them before you can read them. That means, if the PDF file has some sort of viruses or malware attached to it, or if the source website is malicious, then you acquire those dangerous elements into your computer as well.

With Firefox, you can open PDF files online without having to download them. It's safer, faster, and it saves disk space. Ain't that convenient?

So, tell me, which browser are you using right now?

A Good Alternative: the Opera Web Browser, and How It Stacks Up Against Firefox and IE

The Basics

Everyone has used the Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer at some point in their life, and many have ended up trying/using Mozilla Firefox as a good alternative, but very few have used any other, except maby for Apple Safari which they accidently downloaded whilst updating Itunes.

Opera is a wonderful internet browser that at one time you used to have to pay to use. It has since been made available for free.

It's main version is for desktop/laptop computers, although they have recently made a version for mobile phones, but in this article we will just be covering the PC version.

Right From The Word Go

For a start Opera is very easy to download and install, going to the Opera homepage will point you towards the download section, or simply googling "Opera" will take you direct to the download page. From here you just click to download it and run it. Setup takes a few minutes and doesn't require a restart after it is finished.

After installing it, you can boot it straight up. The default homepage is a page about getting started with Opera, but it can easily be changed by going onto "Tools" then "Preferences" to change the homepage to whatever you want.

The Features

Tabs

Opera has tabs, much like Firefox and the latest Internet Explorer 7 (IE were really behind the times before Vista). This means that you can open up preety much as many pages as you want without having hundreds of windows cluttering your taskbar.

Mouse Gestures

Another great feature that seems to be very Opera specific (although once again add-ons for IE and Firefox will allow this), are mouse gestures. By holding down the right mouse button you can then move it in different directions to do cause different effects. Moving the mouse left with go back a page. Moving right will go forward to the next page on your browser. Moving down will open a new tab, etc. etc.

Although seemingly complecated at first, they are very simple and once mastered can save great amount of time and effort, and once you have started using them, there really is no way back. If you choose to start using Firefox, the first thing you will automatically do is download the mouse gestures add-on, purely due it's ease of use, and win over clicking the back button at the top of your browser.

Skins

These are available right from the start on both Opera and Firefox (but not available on IE), and both are very similar. Basically if you don't like the look of the browser when you first install it (the black is a little dull), you can apply a new "skin" which are created by other users, which will completly change the look of the browser. There are hundreds of skins, with something to suit everyone. Want everything bright blue? Done. Want a subtle vista matching colour scheme? Done. With a little searching you will find a skin that suits your taste.

Widgets

Widgets, despite their amusing name, can actually be very useful, and can be used for many different purposes. Widgets can do just about anything. There are widgets that show you maps of the world, widgets that allow you to play fun little games such as sim aquarium whilst browsing, some widgets can show you real time webcams from all over the world, others allow you to play radio stations or check the news, and some just tell you the time, or show weather forcasts.

Overall widgets are handy little extras that add that extra bit of entertainment or information whilst your surfing the web.

Torrent Downloader

Opera, unlike Firefox, IE, or any other browser I can find, has a built in torrent downloader. For the average person looking to have a nice looking browser that they can happily surf the net on, this won't effect them; but for those who know about downloading files through a torrent, this could be handy.

Rather than having to download a dedicated torrent program such as utorrent, all torrentsbei can be handled easily inside a seperate tab in Opera, which allows you to see all the usual information such as seeders and peers, aswell as being able to do all the standard tasks such as setting download limits etc.

This is probibly one of Opera's greatest achievements, as by having a built in torrent program, whilst it's competitors do not, it means it can appeal to a wider audience.

Easy To Navigate History

Ever looked at a really good news article, then crossed it down, then wanted to look at it but not been able to find it? Well Opera has it covered. All you have to do is type in whatever you want to find into the adress bar, and it will show you the websites/pages you have visited lately where the specific phrase has been used. A good example would be where I was looking at some motherboard upgrades earlier. If (for example) I couldn't remember the website that I was looking at that had them cheap, then I can just type "motherboard" into the address bar, and it will show that earlier I was looking at *whatever motherboard* on whichever page of ebuyer I was looking at it on. Overall this excellent way of browsing your history is just genious, and is great when you can't remember the exact thing you were looking at.

Conclusion

Many things included here are including in add-ons for firefox, or by downloading the popular IE Pro for Internet Explorer users, but the fact that they come built in, means that the creaters of the browser really are in touch with their users, and that is always a major thing when it comes to creating any sort of program, be it a game, an application, or a browser.

Opera really does set a new standard for web browsers, and i'm sure when IE finally gets an update, or when the next generation of Firefox comes out, things Opera has already done, such as including a torrent downloader, or having mouse gestures, will become the new standard for browsers.

Firefox Basics

This is a small tutorial on how to get Firefox 3, and make it so much easier to use. This tutorial helped my dad, and im sure it might help you. So what are we waiting for? Lets go ahead and start!

Downloading

As most of you know, Firefox is a tremendous improvement and replacement for Internet Explorer. And click the "Free Download" button. Once you set it up and install, go ahead and open it up!

Adding Usability

Ok. We get Firefox open. Set it as your default browser, and follow these instructions:

Go to addons.mozilla.org

Search for and download the following addons

Adblock Plus

Fast Dial

Greasemonkey

Stylish

Sxipper

Foxmarks

Restart Firefox.

Once that is done, lets go on to setting these up.

Configuring the Addons

Go to Tools>AdBlock Plus, and then go ahead and block the names of annoying sites that put out ads. Oh, by the way, subscribe to the Easylist subscription. Here are a few filters you should add:

adbrite

yimg

adultfriendfinder

And then go ahead and lets configure Fast Dial. Oh wait, you dont need to. Open up a new tab by using Ctrl+T, and there it is. Click on any of the 12 squares, and you can add a button to go to up to 12 common sites you use. You can add styles and scripts to modify the appearance and function of certain websites by going to http://userstyles.org/ (Stylish) http://userscripts.org/ (Greasemonkey) These addons are great. Sxipper is a password manager. There is too much to explain about it, so go ahead and configure it. Lastly, Foxmarks is a bookmark sync program that lets you sync two FF bookmarks into one account on the Foxmarks server.

Use It!

Firefox is a great browser. I have unlocked almost no potential to it. Use it, and you will soon figure out that its an AWESOME program, and you will love it to death. You can customize it even further with more addons, themes, and other stuff.

Bye!

I hope you enjoyed reading this guide. I had a lot of fun writing it, and I hope these 2242 letters/characters helped you out. Stay tuned for more tutorials on Firefox, and have a great day. =)

Thanks.

Common PC Problems 1: Internet Explorer Crashing

Internet Explorer crashing and saying that it needs to close down is a very common problem. However, there are many fixes for it. First of all, you should just wait and see if it does it again, and if you're like me, it keeps happening. Now, you can either go and install Internet Explorer again, which means that you will lose bookmarks and everything, or you can do it my way. Go to Google and search for Mozilla Firefox, which is a web browser much like Internet Explorer. Once you download it, install it, and there will be an option that says to keep setting, passwords, and even bookmarks (favorites) from Internet Explorer. Now, you will no longer have any more problems, and Firefox is also great since it is very customizable. You can search for add-ons and make it your own, including adding a new theme, and even telling you the weather.
Modern Tattoo Designs Reflect Computer and Web Consumer Choices

Tattoos have served as a means of self-expression for centuries, reflecting a person's societal status, personal beliefs and passions.

In reaction to our modern technological era, consumers have turned to computer and web-based logos for tattoo designs, often as a visual statement of a person's choice in software, operating systems or code platforms.

Operating Systems

The debate between the wisdom of choosing Mac, Linux or Windows continues; with consumers using their bodies as a canvas to state their personal choice.

Apple Mac Logo

A bold, clear statement that the owner of the tattoo is a Mac user and proud of it.

Linux Penguin Logo

A cute image that has been used as a tattoo design by many Linux users, especially female users.

Microsoft Windows Logo

A colorful and easily recognizable image that is gaining popularity among Windows users as a tattoo design.

Connected to the Web

Web-based logo designs are becoming chic choices for tattoo designs, with the colorful Google and stylish Firefox logos taking to the streets in the form of body art.

iGoogle

Because Google knows everything. The colorful, clear lettering makes it an attractive design for a tattoo.

Firefox

Not only is the web browser a powerful and attractive piece of software, but the Firefox logo is also attractive and makes a stylish tattoo design.

Lock-in the Code

Mathematics, pieces of code and binary translations are often used in humorous or meaningful tattoos.

HTML

Html code tattooed on the neck, using a snatch of code to create a humorous effect by labeling the head and body with html code.

Binary Code

Name initials in binary code - A personal expression of self, using a Binary translation of this person's initials.

Mathematics

This tattoo has a meaning to the person who chose it, though the symbolism may be misunderstood by those who see it. As with many tattoos, the chosen design often has a meaning that appeals to the owner of the tattoo, but isn't immediately clear to others.

A Walking Advertisement

Some people have decided to use their bodies as a walking billboard for their website.

GrownUp Geek

This tattoo is an advertisement for GrownUp Geek. Advertising takes many forms, but this particular advertisement is paid for once, doesn't weather the way outdoor advertisements do, and will be the topic of many conversations.

Geek tattoos of games, computer symbols and hardware

Mario Brothers

A Mario Brothers "Game Over" tattoo. There are many Mario Brothers tattoo designs available, often with the Mario character in a large, colorful scene with other gaming characters. This one, however, is a series of separate images and has been tattooed on the neck, a painful and very visible area for tattoo art.

Mac Command Key

A bold, clean image with interweaving loops, similar to the popular trinity tattoo.

Space Invaders

A fun image from the classic computer game, shown here in its original pixilated form.

Power

Another simple, yet bold design that holds a deeper meaning for the owner.

Mac Finder

A modern, graphic design used in Mac operating systems that is both friendly and colorful.

Dell

This guy is obviously an avid fan of Dell, to have had the logo covering such a large area of his body. The clean lines and bright color of the logo make an impressive statement in a tattoo.

Many tattoos serve an aesthetic role and are simply an artistic decoration on the skin.

These tattoo design choices express the views and passions of computer and web consumers, and one can only hope that the company logo designs will not change before the tattoos fade.

Things StumbleUpon Should Fix

Now that we've got that out of the way, I can go on to explain some changes I believe they are in need of.

Safari Compatibility

The thing that bothers me the most about StumbleUpon is the fact that it doesn't work in Safari. Now I know most people out there don't have macs, and even those that do might still prefer another option such as Firefox or Camino, but I would like to have the option of using Apple's native browser (which runs much faster than Firefox can, or ever will run). This one flaw has kept me from using Safari and has forced me to use Firefox for the time being as I cannot stand to "browse" the Internet without StumbleUpon. ( I do love Firefox, it just isn't the best option for mac users as it crashes often) I do realize this is probably more Apple's fault in their design with Safari, but someone needs to act soon!

I can't really think of anything else, the program is genius.
