Five Factors for Safe and Enjoyable Web Browsing

These days, the world wide web is a portal to both heaven and hell alike. Search engines make it possible to get a bird's eye view of any array of websites, good or bad. With the right keywords it's easy to find whatever one desires. From comical to cruddy, the internet is a gateway that can occupy the average person for hours on end. Yet, with all the capabilities the internet offers, that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone out to get you. Pornography and warez sites are some of the most polluted websites on the dark side of the web. Whether you browse those sites or not, this article will help ensure you don't walk into a spyware death trap.

Mozilla Firefox

If you haven't already, get Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox is a world away from internet explorer in ways that you can't imagine unless you've used the application before. Firefox is the foundation upon which you will build your own mechanical composition of add-ons and themes so that you'll be able to browse safely and efficiently.

AdBlock Plus

AdBlock Plus is a firefox extension that does, well, basically just what it's name says. It is extremely good at weeding out any lingering advertisements and annoying marketing jibberjabber right before the page is loaded, and all without corrupting the layout of the page.

Sxipper

Sxipper is a firefox addon that basically manages forms. If you've ever heard of Roboform, compare it to that; it's only better and free.

Stylish & Greasemonkey

These two are so great that when combined they have the potential to create an entirely new 'look-like-you-want-it-to' internet. The two extensions allow the code of any selected page to be modified to what is specified, as well as improved and changed. Stylish uses 'userstyles' and greasemonkey uses 'userscripts', and they use them well. In order to incorporate one, all you have to do is click the button on the website and voila, you can check out the new look or functionality that's been added to whatever website you chose. One style I highly recommend is Gmail Redesigned (by Globex Designs).

ScrapBook

Ever want to save a web page on your hard drive and not have to deal with the risk of the page eventually turning into a 404 error page? ScrapBook has your answer. Scrapbook allows you to save a webpage quickly and effortlessly with a click of the mouse. It operates almost exactly like the bookmarks menu, all of your saved pages are stored in a menu right above your address bar.

FireNES: A Firefox Plugin Full of Fun

Old school Nintendo games are enjoyed by millions of people around the world. And thanks to the latest Firefox plugin called FireNES, you can now play many of these Nintendo games for free. All you need is an Internet connection, and to be a registered member of Firefox.

What is Firefox?

Firefox is simply an Internet browser similar to Internet Explorer. It is the preferred browser of millions of people, and it offers many unique features that Internet Explorer doesn't have. Some of these features include an ad blocking program, various types of plugins, and much more. And now they offer a plugin that allows you to play free Nintendo games too.

Registration Process

Registering as a Firefox/Mozilla user is easy, and very little personal information is necessary. The form you fill out will require your email address, a password, your first and last name, a nickname, and your website. These last two are optional. Once you fill in the form, you will be instructed to check your email. Click the link that is in the email you receive, and your registration will be completed.

Types of Games Offered

There are many types of games offered with this plugin. In fact, there are well over two thousand games that you can choose from. You have three different types of categories to choose from. These categories are called the "All" category, the "TopList" category, and a "Favorites" category. It's fairly self explanatory. As for the types of games that are offered you can play Zelda, Mario Brothers, Pacman, Final Fantasy, and many others. Remember, these are all old school games. You will not find the latest and greatest games from this plugin.

Requirements

All you need to access these free games is an Internet connection, a computer, the Firefox browser, and you need to register as a Firefox/Mozilla member (this is free). In order to play these games, you will need to have Java enabled. So make sure that it's working properly; otherwise, the games will not run on your computer.

Problems

The main problem with the FireNes plugin is the fact that the controls are very strange. Sometimes it's almost impossible to figure out what keys you're supposed to press in order to make the game work. However, this will probably be corrected sometime in the future. In the meantime, Firefox users will simply have to put up with the shortcomings of this plugin. There also doesn't appear to be a full screen ability to play these games with. Instead you're stuck with a smaller sized screen. But this may change in the future as well.

Old Nintendo games are something that many people have fond memories of. And thanks to this new Firefox plugin, you can now play these games completely free.

Five Web Browsers Tested

There are a lot of web browsers out there and some are better than others. Which one is the best? There is no answer. It is all about what you want from it.

I have tested five of them, some of them because they are famous and many of them are using them or because they have some cool functions. I have tested Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Space time and Opera. I have downloaded the most recent version of the programs. They are all free except Microsoft Internet Explorer. It requires a legal version of Windows.

NOTE: I will not test the speed. I will test interface, how user friendly it is, the installation, functions and such. Not the hardest parts.

Let's start with Microsoft.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

I downloaded this immediately when it was released (not the beta versions, only the real one). But I have to say that I was disappointed. It was slower than the 6th version and I had some troubles with the installation. One good thing is the interface. Finally they have added the tab function. It was about time. But average it is not improved that much. It has become more user friendly. Even my grandmother can use it. It has a pop up blocker that really blocks. I couldn´t open any pop ups in the beginning. Microsoft hasn't added any special functions that are unique. If you press ctrl+ the number of your tab you get that one and you get an overview of all the open pages if you press ctrl+Q but this is not new. Opera have had it for years. Let´s hope the 8th version will be better.

Not impressed by Microsoft.

Mozilla Firefox

I´m not sure but I think that Firefox was the first one to use tabs, but I´m not sure at all. But I can say that it is the most popular web browser. Most people recommend uninstall Internet Explorer and install Firefox instead. And I can understand them. The burning fox is a really, really good browser. It is fast and reliable, easy to install and it has a lot of cool functions. You can skin it and download cool plug-ins like mouse gesture control and similar stuff. Firefox is awarded for best web browser several times at websites like cNet and PC magazine.

For being open source software this is really great. I use to say: “Either it is free and very good like Linux and open source or it is very expensive like Mac OS X. Then between these two things it come cheap a little bugging software like Microsoft.” Go open source!

Free and reliable software that you can reprogram however you want.

Apple Safari

This has been my primary web browser for a long time now. Mostly because I like Apple very much but can't afford a Mac. It has a very nice interface and tab control like I don´t know what. Everything floats around and there are animations for everything. The installation was very fast and easy. The browser it self is actually noticeable faster than Internet Explorer which I used before. It is user friendly but uses a total different technique than IE so you don´t have functions like scroll but you learn all that after a short time. Functions are very unique:

There is an auto fill function that automatically fills out the forms with your name and address. If you have entered a password that is stored too!

If you drag a tab out of the tab bar it will open as a new page.

The shortcut I mentioned when I was writing about Internet Explorer, Ctrl+Number, is also integrated in Safari. It will open the bookmark at that Number.

What´s not so good with Safari is that all web pages isn't compatible with it. Therefore you must have an option installed. Any of those I have written about here will work!

Very good browser but unfortunately it will require a second one too!

Space Time

This is just SO cool. If you like cool and new stuff you have to check this out. It is a new kind of version. There is no installation; the whole program is just one .exe file. But when you open it… You can browse and search in 3d! It´s so cool! You have a 3d landscape that you can play around with. Turn, zoom… The different searches and browser windows are organized in stacks that are showed either in your 3d landscape or a field at the bottom of the screen. This uses IE as browser and all your favorites and your history is loaded there. Settings are the usual IE settings. The interface is very similar to the interface in iPod Touch and iPhone.

Highly recommended browser, it is only to bad that they are using IE to surf!

Opera

Also very fast browser, it has a very easy interface. It was installed in less than 30 seconds, isn´t that something? What I noticed with Opera was that it didn´t slow my computer down that much. It was running fast all the time, even when I was loading heavy pages. Opera is very cool! You can download small games and small applications that run with opera. It is a good way to take a break from your work and just chill with a mind free game! It is also possible to skin this one too like Firefox. It is a very advanced browser and I am sure that I don´t even know half of them. I can't write much more.

Very, very good and easy, fast, reliable web browser.

My Ranking

Mozila Firefox, independent, free web browser that is very advanced and highly trusted, highly customizable.

Opera, also independent. It has a lot of cool features and is free of charge, skinning possibility.

Safari, independent but can´t show all web pages. Nice looking Apple interface, not possible to skin.

Space Time, cool application but not independent. Uses Internet Explorer to surf. But very cool!

Internet Explorer, pretty boring and standard. Nothing special except how slow it is. No skinning possibility.

Is Firefox the Best Browser?

Firefox is becoming the most used browser in the world. Thanks to heir slogan "faster and safer" the market share of Firefox already cracked the 30% barrier.

But how really good Firefox is?

Firefox is actually slower than Internet Explorer. If you use a website to see the performance of your browser you can see that Internet Explorer performs better in most tests. The fastest browser in the world is Opera. I can't see why everyone is not using it?

Firefox is not the most secure browser in the world and is not bug free like Mozilla says. Firefox has a lot of bugs that virus and hackers exploit to infect computers. I removed Firefox from my computer in the day I installed a new update and Firefox stopped running forever and crashed y entire system! I had to remove it and the Firewall too. When you install a new update it install another Firefox in your computer, after some installations you realize you have about tne Firefoxes in your computer.

Opera is actually the most secure browser in the world. Now it's free and has on ads inside it. I really recommend you to download it!

The only advantage Firefox has over other browsers are the cool add ons you can install. But be careful!!! Some add ons are created by criminals who want to make some money out of you!

Get to Know Your Browsers

Please take time to go through the simplified explanations for it will be helpful for you especially when you would need to explain these concepts to your customers as well.

We will begin this module by discussing what a browser is and then will continue with the other common web terminologies that you would need to be familiar with to be an effective Technical Representative for AT&T.

BROWSER FAQs

What is a Browser?

A browser is a software program used to access and display pages and files on the web. In layman's terms, it is a tool necessary for you to use so that you could surf the internet.

This software cannot function if the user does not have any connection to the internet like DSL, Cable or Dial-up.

REMINDER: A browser is not synonymous to Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is just another browser type.

Why do we have different types of Browsers?

If you are a regular visitor of internet Cafés or if you have Internet connection at home, you would probably have your own preference of your browser. Browsers can be graphical, like the ones that you are most likely used to (Internet Explorer and Firefox), some are just text-only browsers.

Many software manufacturers like Microsoft (makers of IE), Mozilla (makes of Firefox) and Apple (makers of Safari) created their own versions of browsers mainly so that they could have it incorporated in their own Operating systems. Microsoft wanted to have their browser packaged with their WINDOWS OS, instead of them buying Copy rights from other browser software makers.

All in all, different browsers cater to different needs and wants that the internet users would require.

REMINDER: Always verify the type of browser the customer has. Never assume that they use IE just because they have a Windows operating system. It would be safer that you verify so that you would exactly know how to guide them with their browsers (or if you would need to refer them to Support Plus or OEM for that matter).

Where do we get these browsers?

The different browsers would often be available on the official websites of their manufacturer. At the same time, when customers would buy their computers, by default, the computer manufacturer would already install the desired operating system plus the basic software that would always include a browser.

Moreover, customer could also purchase installers from different computer shops so that they could install their browser anytime they want.

Please check on the screen shots below for reference:

How does these browsers affect the FastAccess DSL service?

Technically, it would really not matter what browser you would be using. As long as the FastAccess connection is online, no matter what browser you are using, you should still be able to get the site that you would wish to go to. There would be a difference though in how you might be viewing a particular site when you would be using different browsers. For example, when going online using Firefox, you might have a different view when you open the same site using Opera.

Please refer to example below:

INTERNET EXPLORER

The Firefox browser was opened approximately 3sec earlier than the Opera browser. Usually, when you open a site on any browser, you should be able to see the same thing. However, they would differ due to the plugins that is present in your computer. Another reason is that some sites would work better for a specific browser (which is often Internet Explorer) that when they are viewed using a different browser, the site would not be displayed appropriately or not at all.

How the site is viewed or how they differ is dependent on how the site was programmed by the owner/publisher of the website.

What is a browser plugin?

A browser plugin could be best described as an add-on program in your computer. Browsers would need the plugins to provide specific demands from a site. For example, when viewing video footages from CNN.com site, a browser would need a video player plugin. If you don't have any Windows Media Player or Quicktime Player, your browser would notify you that necessary plugin is needed and that if you do not download and install the plugin, you will be able to view the video from the CNN website.

In real life, you can compare the browser to a car. A car transports you from one place to another. When you install a radio in your car, would be able to listen to music while on a road trip. That radio is the plugin. It is a part of the car that allows the user to do another task aside from being a simple modem of transportation. The car can function with or without a plugin, however, there are specific tasks that a car cannot do without the plugin…which in this case, a radio for playing music.

At the later part of this topic, you would be able to see screenshots showing you how a plugin warning or error would look like.

What is a search engine?

The best example that can be given for this question is Google. The Google site was designed to help people find information that are stored in other sites. This is convenient for people who do not know what specific site would they need to visit for things that they would need to research for.

What is an Internet Cookie?

Simplifying this, internet cookie is a piece of text that a Web Server could store on a user's hard disk. For example, when you visit www.amazon.com, an automatic text file will be stored in your computer's hard disk. This text will usually look like this:

session-id-time 954242000 amazon.com/

There has always been a misconception regarding cookies. It has often been regarded as a “program” that a Web server would store in the computer and gather information about you and your Internet activities. This is not correct.

What is Browsing History?

The browsing history is like a log record. It keeps track of the addresses/URL of the sites that you've been to. This is really helpful if you want to go to a specific site however, you do not remember the exact URL, just browse through your internet history or use a search string that would help you pull up all matching site that were previously visited.

Another logic of the browser history is that it helps the browser load a site faster. Because it has already downloaded the site before, it will take lesser time for the browser to load it up for you by using the browser history. However, on the other hand, too much browser history in the disk space of the computer may cause slow speeds for the PC as well. Thus, users should always limit the history space to atleast 20MB.

What is Cache?

Cache (pronounced as cash) is more or less related to the browsing history. While the Browser History takes note of the URL of the site and the links related to this site, the cache will store the contents of the site itself. That is why, it is possible that you can get the yahoo.com site even if your internet connection is offline because your browser has already captured the screen representation of yahoo when you visited it before…however, when you click on the links, that's when you will get a page cannot be displayed error.

Thus, it is necessary that you do not only let your customer visit ONE site to prove that they are surfing…let them go to atleast 2-3 other websites.

In the Eyes of a Web Tester: The Difference Between Internet Explorer Seven and Firefox

There are three major things that has been bothering me in terms of website interoperability testing between browsers. I'm talking about two browser giants: Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and Firefox (FX).

Pixel Display

I have observed that there is always a difference on the amount of pixel being displayed - at least one pixel. Nothing can be perfect, and looking at the same website on each browser, you get to see no difference at all. But when you get a closer look at it (in between frames or image spaces), you will see that pixel difference.

Sometimes, due to the browser's different pixel-fetching, arrangment of letters in a paragraph also differs. Some of the letters, especially if it contains hypernation, moves up-down as you shift from IE7 to FX.

1.1. Font Display

I guess this is probably due to the pixel display of the two different browsers. In Internet Explorer 7, you can see up-close the "emboss-styled" texts. You can easily spot the difference if you are using Firefox's IE Tab Add-On. Upon switching from one tab to another (from IE7 to FX), you can see how the font's display changes from "embossed" to "un-embossed" states.

1.2. Horizontal and Vertical Spacing Display

This is again, probably due to the pixel display of two different browsers. As I have mentioned above, opening same sites on two different browsers would only seem to display the same buttons, frames and image spaces. However, upon close inspection, you can easily spot the difference by using Firefox's IE Tab Add-On. For super-techies, you can see the difference by overlaying screenshots (e.g. Photoshop CS3) or by manual screenshot pixel measurment to measure the exact distance or pixel difference.

Loading Time

There is definitely a difference between the two browsers in terms of loading time. Since loading time testing is included in our procedures, I was able to observe how Internet Explorer's loading time is much quicker than that of Firefox. On average, there is around 2 seconds per page difference - given that things or elements are on its usual or normal behaviour.

CMS Compatibility

A Content Management System (or CMS) is a program used to create a framework for content of a website. Our company is one of those who are using this tool; and one thing I observed is that some of the functions created (specifically buttons), doesn't work well with Firefox. During one of my testing, I experienced non-functional buttons. I thought at first that this was one of our developers mistake - but later found out that it was due to the tool's incompatibility with Firefox. It was explained to me that some of the heavy-coded scripts embedded on the CMS cannot be properly read by Firefox. But so far in IE7, things worked out just fine.

I am not saying nor implying that one browser is much better than the other. My point here is to simply share my web tester experiences with the two browser giants.

Now my question is, why can't they just follow strict standards (or atleast in proximity)? I mean, I've read some articles in which these two browsers have corresponding or equivalent add-ons and other stuff, but how come in terms of the things I've mentioned above, there is really a difference? It would have been much easier on everyone else's part -- users, developers, designers, and as testers, as well.

Five Reasons People Still Use Internet Explorer Six

Even with IE7 being out for nearly two years, my analytics still show that half of my traffic is using IE6.

Here are 5 reasons they still use an outdated, Swiss cheese security, painfully slow browser.

They Don't Know What a Browser Is

I love it when someone comes to me and says, "My internet is broken. When I open it up I see something I've never seen before." Then you find out that all that happened is that their homepage changed. Many people think that the browser is the internet. Until they can fundamentally grasp what the internet is, they will never have an appreciation for the browser they use.

They Don't Know That There Are Alternative Browsers

Like number one, if they are even capable of identifying what the browser is, most people are unaware that they have choices. The other caveat is the person (like my dad) who, once he finds out he does have a choice, he installs 10 different browsers. If one browser by one company is good, 10 browsers by 10 companies must be even better.

They Are Afraid Of Change

People fear what they can't understand. They put so much effort into learning how to use a browser correctly that it's just too much work to switch to something different, even though it could be faster, easier, or safer.

They Thought The Upgrade Notice From Windows Was A Pop-Up Ad

People are really paranoid out there. Going so far as to put multiple firewalls and virus scanning packages on their machines. If they do get a notice to upgrade, they are so distrusting of adware or spyware that they typically just ignore it.

They Don't Care About Having A "Good Internet Experience"

Hey, they are just glad to be on the "internets". This makes me wonder if they even care that my CSS doesn't render properly when they look at my site. Unfortunately my boss uses IE6 and he does care if my CSS doesn't render properly for him.

Please, if you're viewing this with IE6, switch to a different browser. Even upgrading to IE7 is better than what you're using now. You'd be doing every web developer a favor by installing Firefox, but Opera and Safari are ok too.

Why Should I Move to Firefox?

Cost

Firefox is free for everyone. You might think that Internet Explorer is free, too. It isn't because it's part of Windows and when you bought your Windows, you paid for it. But always the product you pay isn't better than you can get legally for free.

Features

Internet Explorer is nowadays very near the feature list of Firefox and all other browsers. It had a lack of tabs and pop-up blocker before. Firefox is a little better with it's configuration tool because when you configure Firefox, you configure Firefox and when you configure Internet Explorer you might configure things that modifies also other Windows tools configuration like proxy servers.

Interface

Firefox has a little more original (and maybe old) look and interface. It's easier to use for beginners and easy for people moving from old Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). The new interface of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is a little odd for older users and takes a little time to learn using it, I think.

Plug & Play

This might be a trademark of Microsoft but it's also a term meaning easily installable devices, software, plugins... etc. There's many plugins for Internet Explorer but they might modify your system a little deeper (or do I just think this way?) than Firefox plugins which can be disabled/enabled/installed/removed/configured using Firefox own plugin manager and any of these tasks often needs just a restart of Firefox not the whole system. Internet Explorer is also more "plug & play" with malware than Firefox is.

Standards and Scripts

Few sites requires or suggests Internet Explorer. Firefox can pretend being Internet Explorer if it's required. I have been thinking if this is caused by two standards. The standard syntaxes and the IE syntaxes which causes that sometimes "javascripts" have to be made for IE and non-IE browsers. Always the problem isn't either the development of two standards. Simply, all the sites might not work with Internet Explorer in the future.

Documentation

Internet Explorer has its own documentation included with Windows. Many plugin's installations has their own step-by-step tutorials and using Google, you will find many hits, more than for Firefox. But using Firefox, you might get better documentation and help from the developers or next to developers, people that do work with Firefox. If you contact Microsoft asking for help, you most commonly get a link to page in their own web documentation or you have to pay or you figure it out for yourself. Never tried but I see it this way.

Compatibility

If you once study your Firefox well, you will be able to use it on different platforms (often default graphic browser in Linux) and use different browsers that are the same kind because free and open software development goes often with the same line with same ideas to provide better compatibility between different applications.

IE users, please think about it.

Five Fire Fox Add-ons for Freelance Writers and Bloggers

Fire Fox is an extremely customizable internet browser. There are hundred if not thousands of different add-ons for Fire Fox that can make your life easier, or just make browsing the internet more fun. These are five of the must have add-ons for the internet blogger or freelance writer.

StumbleUpon

The StumbleUpon add-on is basically the same as the tool bar you will download on the StumbleUpon homepage. One advantage of downloading the Fire Fox version is you will receive update screens from Fire Fox like you do on every add-on. The StumbleUpon tool bar will do two things for a blogger or freelance writer. The first is, when you sign up for an account you can start submitting your content to the StumbleUpon database which will effectively bring large streams of traffic to your site if used correctly. Another benefit is if you specialize in a certain niche you can select to “Stumble” through content in that niche to get ideas for new content.

SeoQuake

SeoQuake is an add-on more specifically meant for people with their own blog; however it is of some use to freelance writers as well. SeoQuake can be placed in a few ways. You can have it as a tool bar, or a bar that will open just beneath the tabs. This bar can tell you the Google Page Rank of a page, how many times Google has indexed the page, Yahoo Links, Alexa Rating, the Web Archive age of the site, the number of internal links, external links, and the density of keywords. There are a few more options you can select if you want them, but it makes the tool bar a little too big. If you click on any of the above options it will bring you to the page that is feeding it the information. So it will bring you to the Alexa site, or Google search engine showing all the indexed pages. It is very helpful for bloggers to see this information.

QuickNote

QuickNote is a simple note taking pad. What makes this more effective than the wordpad installed on your computer? You can easily pull this up from your browser, and it's easier to take notes with this than a wordpad on your computer. When you would like to take a note you go to Tools > QuickNote and you will have three options depending upon your needs. You can have the QuickNote open in a new tab, open in a side bar (similar to opening favorites in a side bar), or have it open and float above the page like a normal wordpad would. It will automatically open every page you've saved on the QuickNote, so if you close it you can open it just as quickly and continue you where you left off. Great for taking notes on potential ideas, saving links, or just starting your articles.

Split Browser

Split Browser is a very handy add-on for those of you doing research on products. When listing details on products such as specific numbers, or if you're writing an article with another screen open giving you information this is the tool for you. You can effectively combine this add-on with QuickNote if you're a freelance writer by opening QuickNote in a new tab. If you are a blogger simply open your blogs posting area. Then you can split your browser screen so that your typing area is on half the screen while your information is on the other side. Now you can easily write segments and then read on without having to switch screens.

Zotero

Zotero is a quick and automated way to cite your resources accurately. Before you may have used an automated site where you fill out information such as date accessed, website name, author, ect and it gave you correct citation, or you credited the author incorrectly with a simple link to the “original article”. It integrates very easily with Microsoft Word which is what most freelance writers are using anyways. Never again be emailed by an author who thinks you've incorrectly cited their articles.

All of these add-ons are best used by freelance writers and bloggers. They can help you reduce the time you spend writing every day. With the time you save by using these tools you can write more, or be done sooner. I have all of these downloaded and they are spyware free to my knowledge. I'm not responsible for any problems occurring from the result of downloading these.
