Computers

Every time you surf or visit the internet a web page is saved in a temporary file on your computer's hard drive for every click you make. The file is generally known as the "Temporary Internet File." In actuality, this file includes pretty much everything your computer has seen on the Web. This is the first place authorities look when looking for illegal activities, that is, if one is ever suspected of any such activities. Probably the biggest problem over time for some of us, especially if the Web is surfed extensively, is that the file grows very large, which may, in time, cause the computer to slow down. The main culprits are pictures and images because they take up so much space.

The temporary internet file is also filled with "Cookies." A cookie is a small piece of instruction, or program that enters your computer when visiting sites that allow others to track your surfing habits and activity, such as your interests and how often and how long you visit certain sites. Some cookies allow you to reach a site quicker, but they are not really necessary.

Over time, the Temporary Internet File can grow very large and take up so much space that it may slow down your computer. If your computer has become slow, there are several things that may cause this. The following is just one thing that may help computers that have Windows XP Operating Systems with the Windows Internet Explorer browser. The procedure may also work on other systems.

Logout of any email programs
Close all browser windows
Click on "Tools" on the tool bar
Select "Internet Options."
Click the "General Tab" in the dialogue box
Under "Browsing History," click "Delete."

(You will have a choice to delete certain items or delete everything from the temporary internet file. The main items that should be deleted are internet web pages and cookies, but if it is also important to delete your tracks on the things you have searched for, delete "history.")

Select the items you wish to delete by checking the appropriate boxes or click on "Delete all."

(Before you delete all, you may want to record the URL's that you want to reenter in your browser because once you do this, your browser will be empty.)

Click "OK."

This process may help computers that have been used a lot, surfing the Web, over several years and have never had this kind of maintenance done on them.

Now, you may be interested in seeing what your computer has seen over time and what anyone else may see if they were to check your computer. To check this out, follow this procedure: When you are in the Dialogue Box, instead of clicking "Delete" under your "Browsing History," click on "Settings."

Another dialogue box will appear. Click on "View Files," and all visited web pages will be displayed.

Double click on any item and you will get a message similar to this: "Running a system command on this item may be unsafe, do you want to continue?" It's advisable that you click "No."

Click any item you wish to view and then select "Copy File" in the "Folder Tasks" box, which is generally to the left side of the page.

Copy the item to some place on your computer, such as "My Documents."

Then go to "My Documents, or wherever you have copied the item and open it. Caution: If other people have had access to your computer to surf the Web, you may be surprised at what you may see.

Ads by Google

I love to Stumble. I have a good time surfing around looking for cool and interesting sites. I enjoy the humorous sites, especially the ones with wacky pictures. I am a bit of a techie (self proclaimed) and also look for tech related sites. What really kills me though is the advertisements.

Yep. Ads by Google, and Mpire and others. Don't get me wrong, I understand them completely and have nothing but respect for what they are. I just hate having to sift through the ads to get to the content of the website. To me there is nothing worse than the flashing header of the “Press here for a free Ipod”. Then down the right side of the site there is the various “Ads by Google” stuff. Usually as you are reading through the content of the site there is a break in the middle of more “Ads by Google”. And of course at the very bottom even more “Ads by Google”.

I understand marketing somewhat. I understand that if the ads were only at the bottom most people will not see them, or flat out ignore them. Putting them at the top or on the side makes sense. I just don't have to like them. I also don't have to like the number of them on one site. I know you are trying to make a few cents from Google for the advertisements, but some sites just have overkill.

If you want a “thumbs up” from me for your site you put on Stumble or want me to bookmark so I can return over and over, then don't have so many darned ads. The site is supposed about you and your content, not Google Ads. Making money from the ads is a nice addition to your sites. Please continue to use the ads. I won't complain if you have one set of ads. Just don't insult my intelligence (what little there is for me) with too many ads. They make your site look cheap and that you are only trying to make money rather than put out an interesting site with good information or just fun.

Thanks

*steps off soapbox*

Warning! You may get carpal-tunnel syndrome in your mouse-clicking

finger after browsing the following list! Each of the fifty links below

goes to a list of weblinks to articles, tutorials, useful free software,

online videos, or just plain fun. Many of these lists are incredibly huge and

comprehensive, so get ready for hours and hours of websurfing. Ready? Here we go...

99 Resources for Web 2.0 Design

Links to websites that are excellent tools for website design, 2.0 style. From favicon generators to grandient images to logo design, you'll probably find something to give your own website more appeal.

100 (Legal) Sources for Free Stock Images

Finding just that right picture to use on your site can be frustrating, especially if you're looking for royalty-free public images. This list provides one hundred links to free graphic sources. Some of the websites say you have to give the original artist credit to use their content, but that's right and proper to do anyways.

Big List of Peeps Links

Here's an unusual list included just for fun, but if you're a Peeps fan - those small yellow marshmallow ducks especially popular around Easter - you will find much information on this website. There are even links to articles on the semi-indestructible nature of Peeps. Now that's science!

Just like the title says, here are 101 links to some of the most popular free software on the Internet. File compression, system optimization, and torrent managers are only a few of the applications you'll find a link to at this site. Funny thing is, there are actually 102 links in this list, not 101. Bonus!

Big List of Physics Humor Links

Who said scientists don't have a sense of humor? There are eight pages of links here to physics jokes! Who knew there was so much comedy about the laws of physics? This is a bit of an old list, so there are some dead links, but the active weblinks lead to some very interesting websites.

Computer Hardware Links

Another huge list of links going to sites about computers. You will salivate in glee when you see this list if you're a computer geek,. Okay, maybe you won't salivate, but you will find some very informative websites through this list.

Daily Funny Links

Your productivity may go down but you'll have a few laughs browsing this list, so don't let your boss or co-workers hear you.

Eccentric America

Many, many links to some very, very strange websites. Odd places around the world, ghost hunters, ufo's and more... there are too many strange topics here to list. If you need your daily dose of weird, you'll find it at Eccentric America.

Ellie's Treasures Great Beginnings Start Portal

This is a list of tutorials about graphic manipulation programs, especially Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. You will also find links to sites about scrapbooking and website design. By the way, this website is very pink and frilly.

Exciting Links for Boring Days

A very empty page save for a list of links and a submission box if you wish to suggest a weblink. This topic here is mostly comedy, but there are links to interesting articles too. If you're having a boring day, the hundreds of links here will keep you amused.

Filehoo

Friday Fun

Another funny video and pictures website. The video section is particularly enjoyable, as there are over 400 links. Most of the videos are funny television advertisements, oddly enough.

Fun Astronomy Links

More astronomy links! Well, outer space is pretty big after all, so it deserves to have a lot of webpages. Many of the links go to superb pictures of moons, planets, and even other galaxies. Far out, literally.

Funny Links by Witwords

A short but very amusing list to entertaining and downright funny websites. One of the links is, "World's Funniest Budgie". Okay...

Internet Resources

If you're a writer you will find this list very helpful. Online dictionaries, articles about proper grammar, and general "word stuff" can be found here. Yes, there is a section called "word stuff".

Language Links

From the quarterly online magazine Verbatim, this list has weblinks for English language studies, name studies, and even a "For Kids" section. A great resource if you need to know everything about a word. There's also a "Word a Day" section!

Linkfest Haven Deluxe

Weird and Wacky Links Page

A short personal link list, but interesting nonetheless. One of the links lead to a very interesting illustrated guide on how to destroy your computer. Destroying a computer? Blasphemy!

Michael Panda Links

Mike's Picks

Mike must be one busy activist because his list is all about "stickin' it to The Man". Activism can be defined as a lot of people loudly complaining in public while carrying signs bearing bad slogans in even worse handwriting. Ha! Ha! Ha! Sorry, activists. All jokes aside, if you want to see what's going on in the alternative media, give this website a visit.

Monty Python Video Wall

Niall's Great Big List O' Links

Seeing how big this list is draws one to the conclusion that Niall likes a lot of things. Although TV seems to be hated on this site, as it is referred to as "mutant enemy television." With a whole bunch of links below that declaration to websites about TV shows, of course. The Internet never ceases to amaze or confuse...

Open Source Windows

"A simple list of the best free and open-source software for Windows". This is a very handy site because the links go directly to the download page of each popular application. This is a two-page list, so click on the "more software" link towards the bottom.

Open Source God

Over 480 links to open source applications. Project management, desktop environments, and PDF tools are just three of the categories in this huge and very impressive list. At the bottom of the article is a yet another list of links to even more lists of links.. of lists... links... er, sorry.

Other Interesting Links

From hi-beam.net comes a big hyperlink list about alternative film and media. If you're an "indie" film-maker, you'll appreciate this website quite a lot. There's also a list of webpages where film equipment is sold, too.

PistolWimp

Interesting name for a website, but it doesn't wimp out on the videos. They say they have over 8000 videos; click on the "All Files" link that's a bit hidden on the right side of the webpage and you'll get to them all. Happy viewing!

Pointless Sites

This website refers to itself as "the definitive place for perfectly pointless websites", and they make a very good claim for that title. You will get to more lists through the directory on the left, all filled with perfectly pointless links, of course.

Steve Goodman

Mr. Goodman has some wacky links at his site. Going through his list of favorite websites is an enjoyable experience since they go to all sorts of unusual websites. Pulp fiction, The Church of the SubGenius, Fear & Loathing.... this list has some very odd categories.

Submit URL

A huge list of links, mostly to directories and blogs. There must be over a thousand links here! Give it a look-through, maybe you'll find an interesting person's life to read about on their blog.

The Scrutinizer

This isn't a list of websites, but a list of online tools. For example, if you're looking for a particular font and know the name of it, there is a font search engine bar here. There are also IP and URL tools as well. Short list, but included because it has some handy online apps.

The Web List

Need to know what's buzzing in the popular social networking sites? This list is made up of newsfeeds from digg, metafilter, and stumbleupon, just to name a very few. This is an excellent website for keeping updated on what's new on the Internet every day. This website even includes links to popular YouTube videos.

Top 100 Downloads of Free Software & Freeware for Windows

The name of this website is misleading because there are actually over 500 links to useful free software here. But the webmasters explain that they don't want to change the site's URL whenever the list grows. Good reason! Software is very easily downloaded through this website, too.

The Great Software List

More free software! With all the excellent shareware and freeware available these days, it is amazing people still pay for software. There are some Linux links here, as well as applications for Windows.

Website Tips

Here is a great list for you web content writers. Speaking as a web content writer, this author has read many of the articles found through this site, and all of them were very informative. It can often be hard to find good tips on effective web content writing, so this list is very helpful for writers who publish their work on the Internet.

Web Weirdness

Yes, there is much web weirdness here. You will have to click through the number directory on the left to get to the lists, and there's eighty-seven of them! If you can't find something weird through this website's lists, there must be something weird with you.

Interesting Weird Pages

Speaking of weird, here's a list of websites about weird science. If you're working on a perpetual motion machine, cold fusion, or anti-gravity technology, this is the place for you. You are inventing cold fusion, right?

Wimp

Maybe wimp in name, but certainly not in nature. This website is a massive list of online videos to watch. There are funny pictures, audio and Flash games too, but you'll have to scroll quite a bit to the bottom of the page to get to them.

If you find a link in one of the lists above you'd like to share, feel free

to post it in the comments section of this article for others to enjoy. Have

5 Best Ways to Keep Your Privacy While Surfing on the Web

As we all should remember Internet is the child of a US military project called Arpanet ... in fact, Arpanet was a miniature of today's Internet, involving only military computers of strictly military purposes. After that Universities and Colleges entered the game and a fast growth of the interconnected computer systems number became what we call The Internet.

But they forgot to tell us some things! They omitted telling us that an irritating tracking system had been developed parallel to the Internet. The same tracking system that allows malevolent and “bad” coders-hackers to take advantage of specific problems of hardware and software and take over your computer, access vital information and files of your system (access ALSO means DELETION), or simply flood you with spam forever. All this allows otherwise totally legal organizations and companies such as RIAA and similar “patent like” interest protectors, accessing and monitoring files on the internet. So…what they tell us…and are trying to make us believe is the following simple equation:

Illegal content = Bad
Privacy Violation= Umm ... ok!

The worst thing is that the general idea is to be subjected to us in the way of a voluntary privacy violation, so that there's actually no violation. How many times have you ever read the Terms and Conditions of an on-line application setup?

Here you will find some of the best ways to Anonymous browsing, made easy, in order to keep these peeping Toms off your private information and files.

Are You Bored?

So am I... Being bored while at work or wherever and clicking almost subconsciously every link you get from IMs or mail or whatever seems to be getting more and more popular, if not dangerously ubiquitous.

But on the other hand - is it really that dangerous? Well one can obtain some really really useful information just while getting to know some websites that one would never get interested in. For example.. would you ever get interested in building a birdhouse using staples only? I think I wouldn't... yet I somehow find a site about it and get to know some tricks with those damn staples, whether i want to or not. Later in future this knowledge may become useful.

Many many people still claim that surfing without any closer aim is useless and a waste of time. I don't think so. If I did, would I be writting this now anyway? I guess not. There's a high posibility that there are many people wanting to share their views and tricks that make one's life easier and all you need to do is click a seemingly uninteresting link to get to know that many objects on your desk may be used in creating a nuclear weapon or a spy device.

Being bored at work or while trying to learn seems to be a perfect option to turn your mind off for a few minutes (hours?) and relax a bit. You can do that while sleeping, but you can surf the net and not only relax but also find out that human mind is oh-how-complex and from then on have in mind how complex human beings are.

Isn't that fantastic that nowadays we can find out that much information just by sitting and almost without noticing it clicking the links our friends send us? That raises, without a doubt, the average level of knowledge of a statistic person.

What's wrong then in being bored and stumbling without any aim? I say "be bored"! Be bored and be proud of it! For many of your sceptical friends may not know that the bird sitting by the window is this and that and that it tastes great with this and that, which actually is a national dish of this and that country.

The comments left by those who read it made one thing very clear: the list was incomplete. Although I did not initially write the article with the intention of listing the 15 best sites on the web, that is how my message came across - my fault. I have decided to respond to your comments with a series of follow-on lists containing more useful and entertaining corners of the web. I hope you enjoy them:

Firefox developers happy with assistance from Microsoft

Sam Ramji, head of Microsofts opensourcelaboratory, offered Mozilla-developers to see to that Firefox and Thunderbird would work fine under Windows Vista. Meanwhile the Mozilla-developers showed, by mouth of Loaf Beltzner, to certainly have interest in this cooperation. The past time Firefox- and Thunderbird-programmers already tested if their software still works as it should under Windows Vista. There has also been added a code to the software to make it compatible to work with the 'Default Program' -infrastructure, by which at one central place the standard programs are adjusted for certain uses such as, surfing on the internet or listening to music.

It is also a good idea to look at the effects of the security features of Windows Vista on Firefox and Thunderbird and integration with InfoCard could possibly be a good idea, according to Beltzner. Another thing to look into, according to Beltzner, is to let Firefox and Thunderbird make use of the central warehouse for RSS- and Atom-feeds in the new Windows-version, and an integration of Thunderbird with the calendar and the address book in Windows Vista. These are some of the ideas that Firefox has and with the assistance of Microsoft are hoping to accomplish. If all these ideas will worked out is yet unknown, but there is still a lot to do for the Mozilla- and Microsoft-developers.
