Virtual Dating

Then there came emails, chat rooms, community sites and a plethora of areas for people to explore the many opportunities out there. With all this technology and the world becoming even smaller, but more crowded, the internet seems to have back fired. We have access to more things, yes. We meet people we may have never met before, yes. We can talk to family or friends around the world, virtually for free, yes. But how has this effected our own personal worlds.

I am not single right now, but if I was, how in the heck would I be able to use the internet to find a date. If you do a search for online dating you come up with an astounding number of results that equals about three times the population of California. Once you join one of the sites, then you have on average, 400-500 people to go through to find someone you are interested in. Then you talk with them over email and get to know each other and find out that the picture they had up is from high school and they are 10 years older now, if it is them at all.

What happened to the old fashioned dating? You know the one that isn't virtual. The one where you two walk into a room and your eyes lock and there is an instant attraction. How can you lock eyes and feel that romance online? There are video's now, but how do you really know unless your are actually looking into each others eyes and your stumble over your words instead of back spacing or deleting.

It is just amazing that online dating is so popular, but then again it's not. It is much easier to sit in your own home where you are safe. It is easier to handle rejection because you can line a few up at the same time and they will never run into you while you are out on another date. If you don't like them, you can block them out and send their messages to the trash. You can be who you want to be instead of who you are. I guess the popularity of online dating isn't so amazing when you think about it. We live in a new world where peoples lives exist in a virtual world and it is much easier to control that world than it is our own.

Marketing for Beginners: Social Bookmarking Basics

If you already belong to a social bookmarking community such as; StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit or Slashdot, then you are already miles ahead of the things that this article is designed to cover. Although, if you never joined an online social bookmarking network or have joined, but then afterwards had no idea, why, then this is your luck day.

Use your favorite search engine and type in this search phrase “Social Bookmarking Networks”, and then visit several and look around, so to get an idea about the place, people and topics that are popular. If the network is free to join and the place meets your approval, then join.

After you first join, take time and setup your personal profile page anyway that you want, but remember that your profile page is an extension of your personality. If you are a professional in your field and want to build a network for other professional, then you personal profile page should reflect your professionalism, too.

Since most all social bookmarking networks are build on the simple premise of discovery and sharing your discoveries with the community, it is advised to start locating interesting websites, photos (avoid pornography), videos, music and articles, and start posting (bookmarking) your finds to the community website. This demonstrates your ability to be active and contribute to the network in a positive way.

Making friends on social bookmarking is a very easy thing to do. Just click on another member's screen name or photo, and then read over their profile page and interests, and then if you have something in common invite them to be your friend. You can also make friends easily by simply seeing what other members liked your discoveries and ask those people to be your friend.

The more friends that you make, then the more successful your network can ultimately become and that is the name of the game. Plus, social bookmarking websites are an excellent place to discover new subjects that you might find interesting enough to write about that is if you are a writer.

Killer Blogging Guide 2

Let's Recap

We also looked into Blog Content, Blog Themes, Blogging Motives, Blogging Formats; Styles such as short isolated thoughts posted one after the other and not necessarily with any thread of relatedness as well as personal journal type blogs, Forms such as one-offs and running commentary blogs, Media, Social Networking and Forums as well as Interactive Blogs where the reader can leave comments or contribute in some way.

From here we went on to check out some of the current types of Blogs including: Private Blogs, Corporate Blogs: of both the internal and external PR and promo varieties, Public Blogs, Art Blogs, Video Blogs, Photographic Blogs, Multimedia Blogs, Mobile Device Blogs, etc.

Technologies both established and developing such as Blog Search Engines, Blogging Communities and Blog Directories were introduced.

Blogging Objectives

We are now going to take a closer look at some of these while we develop a more expansive understanding of the whole “blogging thing”. First we will discuss a little more about blogs and what makes blogging possible. If we want to gain greater and wider public attention, adoration or even acclaim we need to understand a little about the basic philosophies behind blogging and the reasons why it exists in the first place.

Then we will be in a position to use this information to our own advantage and as large numbers of people measure personal and corporate advantage by way of the almighty dollar we will start to develop tactics and strategies that will help to assist us to get more than just a little of our share of the green stuff.

Another objective that many strive for is “how to become a guru”. This will also be laid open to you as well as monetizing ideas for blogs, blogging and bloggers.

Education

While it's possible that you may wish to go to university or some other educational institution or even take online study at your own pace courses most of which will cost considerably and I will agree; with you in, that personal advancement is a good thing.

Let me tell you a little of my background as I have had considerable experience in all of this myself. I can assure you that this university thing is not only hard work but whilst at university the pay is not the greatest. At least not until you have graduated.

Being a medical student sucked financially. Being a doctor was definitely better; but it takes six years of being a medical student to become a doctor and another year or two of a residency before they will let you run off into the big wide world to start earning.

The Cruelest Blow of All

Then you find out that the pay; while better than that for most people, is not really the greatest considering the amount of time spent in earning it. The costs and worries of running a business and employing staff are something they never told you about in medical school and most certainly never taught you how to deal with and manage them efficiently.

Then the cruelest blow of all. The taxman turns up and wants more than a share. He wants most of it. So back to the books and specialize. Now as a specialist and consultant the money has improved, the job is more interesting, I am helping more of those who need my expertise but the issues of running a business have still to be resolved.

Business Management Classes

So it was off to learn a little business management for me. This did help. But never content and with my desire to help people in need still burning as strongly as ever I decided that technology would be of value in assisting me to help more people; mainly other doctors, to help more people. So computers get in on the act. This was a good idea.

Enter the Internet

After a number of years the Internet got up a full head of steam and so I decide to see if there were any possibilities of using this phenomenon to assist more people to help even more people. To my great delight the answer was yes and like a bull in a china-shop it I dived into this new medium full gusto.

Computer Technologies

After much fruitful activity it starts to become apparent to me that some of the new and exciting new avenues that the Internet and computer technologies seem to issue forth in a never ending stream along with the negatives of this media; such as the ever present threats of malware and persons with malicious intent, I find a need to become involved in computer and IT security.

Confidentiality and Privacy

This is a subject very close to the heart of the medical profession; namely patient confidentiality and privilege, along with all the ethical and moral issues that this entails and the implications of the electronic world in which we live.

Now with the current interest in Privacy and Privacy issues being such a heated topic in the public arena particularly since government has proposed legislative changes that have already been tabled and are now open for due debate and consideration with the ultimate objective of being passed and so enacted to law. I find myself taking an ever keener interest in public debate and forums; not as a participant, but as an observer, at least up until now.

Deaf Ears and Brick Walls

The biggest problem that I have found that the general public has in getting their message across is a lack of effective communication and marketing skills. This is something that can be very daunting and which I have; as already mentioned, had personal first-hand experience and frustration with. The main impetus being that yes; I do hold the ideals of the private person and that private person's right to privacy very dear as does the vast majority of society.

Well much is being said and written about the subject and continues to be so. Unfortunately it seems that much is falling on deaf ears. I am sure that we all have had this feeling on numerous occasions during our lives. “Is nobody listening to me?” How often have you felt that it was like you have been talking to the brick wall for all the effect that it has had?

Interest

Well blogging and the mediums that it has opened is one way to be heard but only for the interested. So how do you make them interested? This will become abundantly clear over the course of the Killer Blogging Guide.

Effective Communication

Creating interest and the notion that; if I can help people to communicate in a way that matters, then much of the unrest and discontent in society will lessen to some extent considerable or otherwise.

In fact this is the very reason that some newspapers came into existence in the first place. Not; to publish profound, great and worthy items of news, but for the people to have a voice. Even if it was somewhat politicized by the journalist and editorial staff of the publisher.

Communication and Marketing

It is through effective communication that we can express ourselves or get our point across. Whether it is a religious, political, moral, ethical or personal theme matters not. It all boils down to being able to sell or at least market something or someone in the most effective efficient manner possible.

The Numbers Game

One aspect of effective marketing that is so often put forward is that it is a numbers game. I am sure that all of you who have had any involvement in multi-level marketing, direct selling, canvassing, telemarketing or other selling oriented activities including affiliate programs and the rapidly exploding force known as viral marketing will have heard that it is numbers game.

The mobile phone companies have a term for those that they employee to do this type of work and that is “churning”. Churning is in essence the practice of calling on or contacting in some other unsolicited way large numbers of people with the intent of enticing or luring them in some manner to take a definitive action. The action is of course to change from their current phone carrier to the people the churner is currently working for.

As to the effectiveness of the numbers game strategy you only have to look at spam and the activities of spammers to see that this is something that will in one form or another be with us for some time to come.

Consider the proposition that:

“You can get what you want if you help enough other people to get what they want.”

This is a common theme with sales trainers. Perhaps they should be a little more honest and say instead that:

“You will get what you want by helping other people to get what you want them to want.”

Still the biggest question of all that most people want to know the answer to is:

“How can I do this with no work?”

The answer of course is that you can't.

Principle One: If you don't put in you can't pull out

Next we come to the question of:

“How much do I have to put in before I can start pulling out?”

The answer to this is that it will vary depending on your motives and goals. In particular factors relating to quantity are highest in priority here. The more you put in the more you should be able to pull out. The length of time between putting in and beginning to pull out will dictate the exponential factors between the amount put in and the amount taken out.

Letting your investment “cook” for a while and compounding it by returning any immediate benefits back into the investment is one of the surest ways to turn your investment into an exponentially growing cash cow.

Principle Two: Reinvest for exponential benefits

This can be as simple as continuing to add to your content on a regular basis. Inviting readers to leave comments to your blogs helps to create the “viral effect” which is a topic I will be expanding upon in a later issue.

The next burning question is: How much is enough? This will be where we pick up the storey in Killer Blogging Guide Part Three. Until then enjoy!

Killer Blogging Guide 3

Principle One

The first principle that we learned was about putting something in before you can expect to get something back in return. If you do nothing which let's face it is what we have been doing up until now you will not be getting anything to magically materialise out of thin air. I think this is something that is fairly easily understood. Principle One states:

You can't take out until after you have put in

Principle Two

Next in Principle Two we began to learn about when to take back something of what you have been putting in. How much you can take out and theories of exponential growth were introduced by Killer Blogging Principle Two which states that you should:

Reinvest for exponential benefits

Principle Two went one to discuss the ideas of a “cash cow” and letting your investment “cook” for a while. It went on to expound how compounding your input through the reinvestment of benefits back into your investment was a sure-fire way to empower your investment with an exponential growth factor. We also introduced the idea of a “viral” factor which will be discussed in greater depth shortly.

Now it is time to get into the question of:

“How much is enough?”

The answer here is complicated and depends largely on the following types of criteria which I will discuss in greater depth later:

Quantity - How much you want to pull out. Very hard to be satisfied if you don't know how much you want. Let's face it we want it all!!!

Frequency - How often you want to be able to pull it out. It is also a good idea to define how much of the “good thing” we want or need. No need to tell anyone else how much you want if you don't want to tell them.

Period - How long you want to be able to keep pulling it out for. If you are like me then this one is easy. Forever!

Flexibility - Pulling out whenever you want. Once again the answer to this is an easy one. All of the time!

Reason - Why I want to pull out. The best reason of all is: Because I want to!

Commitment - How long you are prepared to keep putting in. Even viral tactics require some attention. Autopilot can also be used to our blogging and content promotion benefit.

Additional Investment - The pull out variable applied with respect to return for effort

Diversification - Expanding both topical content and the locations for your content. We will open new possibilities for exploiting your content. That's right not mine. Yours!!!!

Research - The amount of research that may be required to garner a following or to develop your content and strategies to the degree of proficiency and return that you desire.

Placement - Finding the best location(s) for your content. The more different places your content can be accessed from will definitely result in you gaining a wider audience-base.

Expansion - Develop new content formats and styles. Simple lessons and exercises will be developed and through them you will be able to expand your horizons. The Internet really has made “the world your oyster”. It's the pearls that we are after.

Practice - Practice content creation and develop your skills in this area. I will also be giving some basic tips and a few short simple exercises that you can do immediately to begin earning some cash for yourself.

After all; the whole idea of this exercise is to prove that by following a few simple directives anyone can make some extra cash through blogging and content creation. Remember I have already tried and tested these strategies thoroughly myself. My big plan is to start having you earn money and therefore to become willing to participate as potential research statistics for my new book.

Presentation - Presentation can often be more important than the actual content is the way that you present your content. That's why the news media use attention grabbing headlines. So experiment in multiple formats and styles. I will be detailing how to do this effectively in a later issue.

Targeting - Targeting to a specific audience can often be rewarding not just from the personal satisfaction of meeting “like-minded people” but in being able to get your message delivered in a more direct manner to those you desire to be your audience.

It is no good writing the world's greatest blog about how to cure the ills of the elderly if you publish the content on a site with a viewer audience consisting of 90% under the age of five.

Goal Setting - Okay I'm sure you have heard this before but I will say it again setting your self goals is important as it gives you an objective or target if you like.

For example: A recent study in Amsterdam has shown that by painting a fly on the inside of a men's urinal the amount of spillage that occurred decreased quite dramatically. It helps to have something to aim at.

It never ceases to amaze me the things that some people are prepared to research and the are very serious about it even the urinals researchers were seriously conducting human behavioural studies.

Maybe you might like to take a short course in sociology and human behaviour. They may be undertaking some quirky research that you may find amusing. Anyway it is something to remember for times when toilet training becomes an issue.

Work Smart - Sometimes there are multiple ways in which any given task can be accomplished. The object is to find the one that suits you and your objectives best. It also helps to be able to use strategies that optimise that which you do.

You can work hard but you can also work “smart”. I will be going into ways of working “smart'” and maximising your returns per unit of work effort. This will include such tools as automation and style transitioning along with mass production strategies and techniques.

Quality Content - The answers to the questions of: what is quality content and why is it valuable? These will all be explained but in short quality content is generally taken to mean anything that is of original content and creation by the author. This infers that it may not have been published on the net before but this is not always the case.

Correctness - Presenting information is one thing but presenting correct and provable content that is what is valuable about “quality content”. This includes correct spelling and grammar. Yes I know many have issues with these two factors so I will be showing you how to take care of them the easy way.

Tools - A classic example of this concerns research. In the old days research about anything basically involved considerable man hours. Today the Internet has made available the tools that we collectively call Search Engines. I am sure that anyone who has had any exposure to the web will have encountered Google®, Yahoo® and the multitude of other search engines that are available.

I even listed a number of search engines and communications tools that were blog specific or blog oriented in part one of the Killer Blogging Guide. In case you missed it here they are again: Bloglines, BlogScope, Technorati, BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog

Publicity - Call it publicity, advertising, promoting, marketing or anything else you desire it still boils down to getting your message to as wide and copious audience as possible and in the shortest possible time with the least amount of effort.

Here is an area in which I will be giving considerable amounts of guidance. Using psychology is one of my stronger points and I will show you how to use psychological tactics to your advantage.

Internet - The Internet its structure and modus operandi will also be explained. You will find this very helpful in getting the job done. It will also enable you to explore and develop new areas, markets and niches that you never thought were there or would have been of any interest to you.

Niche Marketing - I myself have been involved in some rather tedious niche exercises not because I was enthralled then or now by the subject but because it proved to be profitable. My intent was to prove that the strategies that I am telling you about worked and that anybody given guidance, a little will power and the desire can do just about anything.

Yes I will be telling you about some of these niche adventures that I have had. Some were truly sad and others were just pitiful. Then there were a few that were quite amusing and yes I even managed some that became interesting.

But they all had one thing in common and that was that until the point when I deliberately undertook them I had never had any interest in them what-so-ever. I did it to prove a point. Nothing motivates a person as much as the desire to prove to one and all that they were right and I was.

It is all part of one of my current research projects which when published I will provide links to but please bear in mind that most of what is and what is yet to be finalised for inclusion in the final print draft version of the book is going to cost you the price of buying it to find out about.

Since we are discussing blogging and all about it I will say that much of the blogging related materials will have been covered here but not in the same depth or with the provision of the statistical data that the book will have. The book already contains much that is not relevant to the topic of blogging so just wait and see until my publishers let me divulge more.

Next Time in the Killer Blogging Guide

In the next issue of the Killer Blogging Guide we will be getting back into the serious business of learning about blogs, blogging, blog creation, blog authors and monetizing blogs by introducing Principle Three of monetizing blogs or if you prefer blogging for profit. But first here is a new spin on the blog concept:

Sketchcasting - Since sketchcast.com debuted, the idea of "sketchcasting" finally found a tool that made it a whole lot easier. This is reflected by doing a quick Google search on the term “sketchcast” and you will find over 300,000 results. Not bad considering the term didn't exist four months ago.

What is it? Basically a simple idea really you use a whiteboard to illustrate your point all the while talking into your PC's microphone and Oh-la-la-la ideas and illustrations with a running commentary. Check it out for yourself.

So until next time enjoy.

Killer Blogging Guide

Let us start with the basic question of what is a blog?

Blog - A popularized term that is short for (contracted) web log. It is generally taken to mean a website or web presence that is usually maintained by an individual. The contents of which can be in practically any format text, image, photograph(s), sound files, video to name a few but the primary consistency is that of the electronic or digital form as is usually the case these days.

It also needs to be an open format readily accessible to the multitudes if one actually wants somebody else to be able to view, read, listen or watch it. Creating blogs in archaic format that nobody can view is good as a cryptic puzzle but not really suitable to the blog format. Being maintained by an individual also has its drawbacks in that the individual must give freely of their time, for routine maintenance tasks which some bloggers are not truly interested in doing anyway.

Common Formats - Posting blogs in a format such as a PDF document is a good way to ensure that the viewer will see the content as you intended it but the viewer will need software to open and view the PDF document. Fortunately Adobe™ Reader® is free and readily available so PDF documents are becoming a very common format as the blogger can package a whole months worth of material into one convenient package and have the PDF archive accessible to anyone including the merely curious.

Content Topic or Theme - The content of a blog can be as wide in topic as the human imagination may dream up. It may be about topical events such as news, politics, the events in your local community, vague impressions of something the blogger did or may do. They maybe geographically pointed, community-oriented, educational, comical, personal, current or dated or just about anything and anywhere else in between or outside.

Many blogs are more or less a public personal diary or journal if you will. An individual will make regular entries in a running informal style telling one and all what they had for breakfast or lunch or whatever they so desire to write. Love and sex are obvious common topics fro blogs and may not necessarily be restricted to the authors own personal activities.

Chronology - Generally blogs are in reverse chronology. That is the most recent entry will be at the top of the page or list. For those who came in part way through the conversation and deciding that they would like to read the story as it occurred the need to start at the bottom of the page and work your way up can be a little inconvenient. Yet another compelling reason to create an archival version in standard chronological format. PDF documents are great for this.

Monetizing Blogs - Money is also a common theme to be found throughout many blogs. I will in fact be writing more than just a little about how to make money from blogging myself over the course of these articles after all it is one of the reasons that I am writing this in the first place. So; tips on "monetizing" blogs will abound. After all making money seems to appeal to so many of us that we are prepared to try and do just about anything within reason that is legal to get at the green stuff.

It is also very popular to watch somebody else doing just about anything to get their hands on the cash. One of the very reasons that “Reality TV” shows attract an audience. “Fear Factor®” being one where we can watch those whom many would call idiots doing things that we ourselves most definitely would not do or at the very least would do everything within our power to avoid doing.

To Blog - When used as a verb blog means to create maintain or add content to a blog (web log).

Social Networking - Members of Facebook, MySpace and even Youtube have either viewed or contributed to a blog in one form or another and probably without realising it.

Reader Comments - The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format can be an important part of a blog and is very appealing to many. This can be seen from the sometimes lengthy conversation threads associated with some blogs.

Topical Commentary - Blogs may contain commentary or news about or on a subject or range of subjects.

Multimedia Formats - Because a blog can be comprised of many different media formats it can be thought of as being a social multimedia medium. It is not uncommon to find blogs comprised of text, images, and links (URL) to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to the blogs topic.

Accuracy - One issue that some do put forward with this is that just because you as the blog's audience agree with the content of a blog does not make that content or its point of view right, factual or authoritative in any way. Always bear in mind that more often than not the validity of statements made or referred to in blogs is often not verified or validated in any way by the author. It may simply be a point-of-view.

Controversy - It is also not uncommon for the author of a blog to make controversial statements purely with the intent of attracting attention and a response (usually from the outraged or righteous).

Micro-Blogging - A form of blogging that consists of a series of very short and usually punctual statements often with no thread of coherency or relationship from one comment to the next. This can be used as a very good strategy for marketing which I will be discussing in more detail a little later.

Personal Blogs - The personal blog is an on-going diary or running commentary by an individual about themselves or things about their immediate vacinity, family, friends, boy or girl friends, love topics etc. It is the most common from of blog.

Personal bloggers tend to take great pride in their blog posts and do not generally care that their blog is never read by anyone but them. In this way a blog could be a means for an individual to express themselves or to communicate their thoughts of the moment.

Some personal bloggers do however crave an audience and some even gain wider attention or notoriety. Yet others manage to garner a following which can be quite extensive considering that the Internet is so vast. Seven billion people on the planet; makes for a vast, potential audience some of whom take some interest and others who delight in your misfortune.

Corporate Blogs - A blog may be private or it can be for business purposes. In this case there are basically two types of business blogs: Those used entirely internally within an organization to enhance channels of communication and organizational related matters such as “Don't forget our sale commences next Monday. So be early to work. Thank you.”

The blog may also be used by an organisation as a means of promotion or fostering goodwill. The aim here is to promote brand, branding or for public relations purposes.

Artlog - A form of art sharing that is focused primarily on art work as opposed to text

Dreamlogs - Also known as blawgs. Dreamlogs are blogs which are subject content or topically focused such as blogs devoted to politics, travel, fashion, projects, education, niches, niche markets, marketing, music, film legal matters and practically any other topic you can think of.

Linklog - A blog comprised of links or URLs

Moblog - A blog written using a mobile device such as a mobile phone, PDA or other handhelds

Photoblog - A site comprised of photos

Sketchblog - A site comprised primarily of sketches

Splog - Used for the sole purpose of spamming and is not considered to be a legitimate form of blog. Most would agree that the less spam the better but spammers are persistent if nothing else.

Tumblelog - Also called a Jumblelog is comprised of short post and mixed media types

Vlog - A blog comprising videos

Blog Search Engines - There are also search engines devoted to searching blog contents. Examples include Bloglines, BlogScope and Technorati

Blogging Communities and Directories - We even have online blogging communities that connect people to blogs or other bloggers such as BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog

In Part 2 of the Killer Blogging Guide we will explore more about blogs and their authors. We will also begin to look at how to write a blog and where to house your blog. After which we will start to get down to the real business of examining how to monetize blogs and how to use blogs for marketing purposes. Till then enjoy!
