Seven Great Sites for Odd News and Satire

Enough with the depressing and predictable headlines! Here's a list of seven wonderful news sources that sit well left-field of the big names. I've always enjoyed news of the man-bites-dog variety, and a look at the headlines on these sites will usually give you a couple of “say WHAT?!!” responses. Some of these sites also enjoy taking a pin to the blander news bubbles found in other media channels:

Reuters Oddly Enough

This is part of the respected media giant Reuters's website, and most of the news on the site is verifiably true. I've often seen stories break on here, and then a couple of days later seen them taken and run by other trusted news channels. Text, photo and video content, spanning the globe and created by professional journalists and .

Sample stories:

Teensy thief crawls in mail flap

Jogging pilgrim stuns motorists

The Independent Online - A Step Beyond

Run by a group of South African newspapers, the Independent Online often has whacked-out headlines in its mainstream news section, so turning to its oddball pages is guaranteed to surprise.

Sample Headlines:

Buddhist dog prays for worldly desires

Condoms roped in for bungee jump

Daniel Kurtzman's Political Humor Guide

While this site doesn't carry news explicitly, it will often have links to videos and news articles about the political scene in the U.S. This frequently updated collection of the best in late-night political satire is a must for anyone following the U.S. election, and it will usually have biting satire and cartoons about the U.S. and world political current events.

Sample stories:

This Just In, a roundup of political craziness.

Late Night Jokes, a collection of the best in late-night political comedy

The Onion

This site should need no introduction, and its slogan says it all: “ All the news that's fit to fabricate”. You can see from this that 'The Onion' is open about the fact that it prints lies (in contrast to many other media channels) but it is intended as satire on current events and the zeitgeist of our times. Essential reading.

Sample headlines:

Son-Of-A-Bitch mouse solves maze researchers spent months building.

Yankees Bury Bernie Williams under new stadium for good luck.

OddNews.org

A great one for bloggers, as it's a community-based site which focuses on content. If you have an oddball story, send it and get it posted.

Sample headlines:

Historian: Bagpipes history mostly hot air.

Romanian man rears lion in garden until neighbors complain.

Myway

A website with news from Associated Press. There are usually some gems in here, and since the AP website doesn't have an odd news section of it's own, this is the place to find them.

Sample headlines:

Buddy the 'beautiful bulldog' excels at sleeping, snoring.

New Jersey mayor finds lost cat in home's wall

Newsvine

This is a community-based news site with a great odd news section. Articles are submitted by pro journalists and members of the community, and the group is based in Seattle. This means that there is a slight Pacific Coast bias - unless Oregon has a higher percentage of crazy occurrences per head than anywhere else in the world.

This site is mainly based on a concept of social networking bookmarks being "seeded" into the site, which will then carry a link, which will take you to the news item.

Sample headlines:

Stunt driver sinks Bond car into lake

Visual Oddities: 11 Wildly Eccentric Videos From the Archive

It was a challenge finding these following flicks amongst all the other weirdness, but an enjoyable task nonetheless. I mean, where else on the Net can you go to watch animated talking teeth, people acting like cavemen in a busy city, and a chimpanzee being fired into space? Only at the Internet Archive, apparently.

1. Help, My Snowman's Burning Down (1964)

This multi-award winning surrealistic film is supposedly a satire on Madison Avenue advertising. It's full of bizarre images: a fully-clothed man using a typewriter in the bathtub, a woman's hand coming out of the drain, and a roll of toilet paper attacking a man's leg are just some of the scenes within this strange film. You will also hear some pretty good jazz in it too. Oh, and around the 6:45 mark the guy sets fire to his own hat to keep warm. Now why didn't I think of that?

2. Cliché Family in Televisionland (1965?)

This film is a corny parody of the typical television family. The Internet Archive describes this movie as an "in-house" joke made by a large television commercial producer. Some of the scenes are actually quite funny, and it's amazing to see how many of the clichés in this film still hold true today. A little after the five minute mark, a man smokes two cigarettes at the same time. Ah, men were men back then...

3. Munchers: A Fable (1973)

I've used the word surrealistic many times before, and I'm gonna use it again for this film. What you've got here is your basic surrealistic stop-motion clay animation story on proper dental hygiene. Talking teeth, a bad guy named Jack Sweet, and dental abuse with what looks to be a handheld bulldozer abound. Man, the 70's sure were weird.

4. Mud People (1989)

Wait, I take that "70's was weird" crack back... it seems that the 80's were even weirder by the looks of this video. Some sort of weird performance art event where people acted like cave people in downtown San Francisco. You know, running around in the revolving doors, angering people trying to work, that sort of thing. This video is much too short in my opinion; much more footage of the "mud people" going berserk would have been great.

5. VD is for Everybody (1969)

It is? None for me, thanks! A montage of different people make up this short video, including a very catchy song as well. One lyric goes: "Anyone can share VD with someone as nice as you..." Awww. Brings a tear to my eye, this public servant announcement does. And now that I've watched the video three times, I feel like I may need to go to the doctor.

6. Trailblazer In Space (1961)

If you've ever had a hankering to learn the whole process of firing a chimpanzee into space, then this is the flick for you. This video documents a 1961 space mission, where Ham - an innocent chimpanzee, is the passenger on a rocket pointed way, way up. Everything goes fine in the primate's eighteen minute space flight, thankfully. Ham was a true trailblazer into space, and this is his proud record.

7. That's Right

This is an excellent example of a mashup made with a video from the Internet Archive. Made by a fellow named Ken Smith, this short film is, well... you have to see it. Including a whole bunch of strange clips from weird movies, this mashup is genuinely a pleasure to experience. That's right!

8. About Fallout (1955)

No, this mini-documentary isn't about the classic computer game, unfortunately. Attempting to explain nuclear fallout and be reassuring at the same time isn't easy, but this movie does its best. Filmed in glorious 50's color, the narrator has a very calm, easy-going voice which almost makes you believe that being bombarded by lethal radiation is really no big thing after all.

9. The True Experience of Officer Harold Sewell (1938)

This film is a prime example of what happens when you give a lousy script to a bunch of bad actors. A commercial for Eveready batteries, this one minute and twenty second tour de force is supposedly a true account of police officer Howard Sewell stopping a car being wrecked by a train by using his flashlight. A flashlight using Eveready batteries, of course. The great parts in this video are when Officer Sewell says, "I'll stop it!" and dashes off like Superman, and at the end where everybody is thanking the flashlight for warning the train to stop, instead of Officer Sewell.

10.Tribune-American Dream Picture (1924)

A silent movie from 1924, this short flick documents a woman's dream. It's a strange one too, with her running around trying to find her baby, who eventually turns up driving a car! Also the man stomping fish in the middle of the street doesn't help matters much. Somehow the lack of sound in this movie only makes it even more surreal.

11. Knife-Thrower and Children (1950s)

Here is a touching short film about a mother lovingly throwing knives at her two young daughters. Back in the 1950's, this sort of thing was an entertaining family act; these days it would get Louella Gallagher, the mother in this video, at least ten years behind bars. She is very talented at throwing the knives, although one has to wonder if her kids are still alive today.

Weirdest Thing I Found on the Web: Taxidermy Rat Lingerie Collection

The fashion industry is always changing. Designers are going to the extreme to grab your attention and launch their look, design, concept, or line. Kristofer Paetau, of Rio de Janeiro, definitely took the fashion industry to a new, bizarre, and definitely odd, place: dead animals as accessories.

His very unique “collection” consists of five Chanel inspired pieces including a bra, thong, pair of high heeled shoes, handbag, and handkerchief that are all “ornamented” with taxidermy rats, complete with heads, feet, and tails. Some of the pieces are adorned with lace, pearls, and silk, as well.

To top it all off, the “collection” is modeled by several different transvestites, thus the name, “Trans Rat Fashion.” Fair warning, if you choose to visit the site, some models are nude or partially nude while posing for pictures with the garments, and there are a few disturbing nude poses. There are also video clips with sound of the fashion shoot that I chose not to view.

I have said before that the web will always provide us with interesting, odd and weird sites for our entertainment; even if they weren't necessarily created with that in mind. This one, one the other hand, is more freaky than entertaining. It's truly frightening to consider, what will the fashion industry think of next?

10 Outrageously Weird Websites That Make The Web Fun

These 10 bizarre websites make the Internet bigger, but not necessarily better is just another reason to check them out.

The Internet is a very big place where the normal world ends and the weird wonderful world of bizarre begins. These ten websites are no exception, but the exception and you'll soon be on your way to discover all of the wacky, wonderful subjects and topics that some people have thought would be awesome to dedicate an entire website to their bizarre sense of taste.

1.

Are you spending too many afternoons locked up in a room while flipping through a Victoria Secret catalog and spending some quality time with yourself? If the answer is yes, and you need some help, then look no further than this website. Complete with articles, and other information developed to help break the addiction and give hands around the world a much-needed day off.

2.

According to the website, T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. stands for Test With Inorganic Noxious Kakes In Extreme Situation. In 1995, Rice University designed and performed a series of tests to test the properties of the sponge desert snack known as the “Twinkie”. An entire website dedicated the Twinkie is pretty darn weird, but in this case interesting, too.

3.

This website is dedicated to condiments (not condoms, don't let the first entry on this list confuse you), but if you want to learn about mayonnaise your out of luck. Learn about some of the most popular condiments available to dress up any of your favorite sandwiches or fries.

4.

Just accept the fact that some fads just won't die. This website glorifies the obsession with the world's most horrible hairstyle faux pa. Everything that you never wanted to know about mullets can be found on this website.

5.

Now here is a collectible that I would have never thought about pursuing. Collecting barf bags is nothing but weird to me. So, if you are interesting in seeing some barf bags from around the world, then stop making excuses and pay this website a visit.

6.

This website is extremely weird even bordering dangerously close to stupid. Truthfully, I have found it terribly difficult to describe. To make things even worst this website allows its visitors to submit their own “Oo” to the list. This website is totally useless, incredibly difficult to explain and worthy of its place on this list.

7.

This website is the perfect place to find stupid gifts, gags and goodies that are as bizarre as this website is. Imagine the expression on your love ones face when they receive a Tattoo Sleeve, a Hillary Nutcracker or an electronic yodeling pickle as a gift from you. Just remember to remove the receipt, because payback is hell and there are plenty of odd, stupid and bizarre gift ideas to choose from and worst yet you might receive one of them as some kind of bizarre gift-giving payback.

8.

Finally a website that I can get behind even though it is bizarre. The Darwin Awards are awarded individuals who improve the world by accidentally removing themselves from it. Within the pages of the Darwin Awards are hilarious stories and events that chronicle the enterprising the demises of people doing some really bizarre things. Warning: Some people may realize that they can do two things at once; laugh and pee at the same time.

9.

Who farted? Rule number one should be, whosoever farts in a crowded elevator should have to endure fart jokes for the rest of the ride. Being the butt of jokes should make one think twice before cutting the cheese after the elevator door closes. Seriously, this is a bizarre website that outlines proper elevator etiquette especially when not riding alone.

10.

Have you ever wondered? I know I sure have. This website is the prefect ending to this article, because, well…Click if you dare. Believe me, it is a liberating feeling to have closure, finally.

This Is Not Right: The 10 Most Eccentric Items Ever Auctioned Online

These crazy ten things that were either put up for sale or sold will blow you away and will leave you wide eyed and astonished. The following ten objects are in no specific order and are all considered to be pretty weird.

A Serial Killer's Fingernails

One of the weirdest things ever sold was a serial killer's cut fingernails. In 1979, two men named Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris rode through southern California on a killing spree that resulted in at least five victims.

Years later Roy Norris, the man in the mug shot above had his fingernail shavings that had been taped to the back of a Christmas card sold on the net. His fingernails only sold for $9.99 but still stand as one of the scariest and weirdest things ever sold on the internet.

A Person's Soul

In late 2007, an American man tried to sell his soul for $1 million dollars on the net. He said that the reason for selling his soul was to raise money for the Christmas season. He also said that the proud owner would be allowed to take the soul home in a glass jar along with a contract relinquishing ownership. The image above is a picture of the man who actually looks a little bit scary.

The following is a quote that the man had said about his soul,” I'm not really using it lately - and selling it on the internet is better than letting the Devil have it.” The soul never sold although it doesn't appear to be still up for grabs. FYI: In the past somebody's soul was successfully sold for $400.

A Liver

Another crazy item that was put up for sale on the net was someone's liver, which is the body part in the picture above. A guy from Florida tried to sell part of his liver for a possible organ transplant. The price for his liver reached $5.7 million dollars before being eventually pulled from the website it was being sold on. It was removed because it is illegal to sell body parts over the internet.

Haunted Rubber Ducky

Another very odd item sold on the internet was a haunted rubber ducky. In 2004, a man sold a so-called haunted rubber ducky, resembling the one above. He said his one and a half year old son had been telling weird and scary stories about fights that he and the duck had had. Also he said that his child had been bitten by the duck, making the child mean and vicious, and causing him to throw the duck across the room. After only 7 days on the site the rubber duck sold for the price of $107.50.

Jesus Toast

The seller of the product in the picture above had accidentally burnt his toast in a toaster. Before throwing the piece of toast away, he suddenly noticed the face of Jesus on his toast as if by some type of miracle. He put the odd piece of toast up for auction with the starting bid of $.99, although this piece of toast never ended up selling.

Justin Timberlake's French Toast

In March 2000, a leftover piece of French toast, half-eaten Justin Timberlake of N*SYNC was sold on a website. The entire group of N*SYNC was on the Z-Morning Zoo, some sort of TV show, on March 9th. On the show, Justin only ate one bite of his French toast! The seller said that the buyer would get Justin's half-eaten French toast, the fork he used, and the plate...complete with extra syrup! After a total of 40 bids and not even two days on the internet, the French toast was sold for a total of $3,154 dollars.

Rights to Name a Woman's Baby

In April 2005, a 33 year old woman named Melissa Heuschkel auctioned the rights to name her baby on the internet. After not being able to decide what to name her fourth child, Melissa decided to turn to an online bidding site. The rights for naming her child sold for a whopping $15,100 dollars. The online casino site named GoldenPalace.com bought the right of naming her baby. The casino website decided to name the child GoldenPalace.com. The image above is a picture of newly born GoldenPalace.com. Melissa said that the money received would go towards caring needs and toys for the new born baby.

Imaginary Friend

Another odd thing sold on the net was a guy's imaginary friend named Jon Malipieman. The image above is a picture of this imaginary friend Jon Malipieman, and as you can see he is imaginary. The man that sold Jon lived in the UK and said that he was selling Jon because he felt like he had grown out of him.

In the listings for the product the seller stated the following: “My imaginary friend Jon Malipieman is getting too old for me now. I am now 27 and I feel I am growing out of him. He is very friendly. Along with him, I will send you what he likes and dislikes along with his favorite things to do and his personal self portrait.” His self portrait is the picture you see above. Amazingly Jon Malipieman got 31 bids and ended up selling for over $3,000 dollars. Now that is Wacky.

Ghost Cane

In 2004 a so called Ghost Cane was sold on a bidding site. A woman in Indiana her dead husband's metal walking cane up for sale in hopes that her scared grandson would think that his grandfather's spirit would leave their house when the cane was sold.

The image seen above is actually a picture of the dead grandfather who is to the left, along with the scared grandson who is in the ladies arms. Her six year old grandson son thought that the grandfathers' spirit was haunting their home, causing him to be scared of everything. The cane received over 132 bids and sold for the price of $65,000 dollars. The buyers of the cane actually ended up being GoldenPalace.com.

Giant Cheetoh

In 2003 the worlds largest Cheetoh was put up for sale. The Cheetoh weighed more then a half an ounce and was as big as a kiwi. The image above is a picture of the giant Cheetoh and as you can see it is huge. The man who discovered the Cheetoh was Mike Evans. Before the Cheetoh could be sold it was taken off line and donated to a small town as a tourist attraction. Before being taken offline, the Cheetoh had received bids of up to $180 dollars and still had days left in the auction.
