Adding Links

1st- Links allow your Article/Website to look more professional and presentable to your viewers. If someone goes into one of your articles and sees everything is unorganized and goes on forever they'll be tempted to go find another article on the same thing thats shorter and straight to the point.

2nd- Google and other popular search engines use a link based system finder. When they index your websites they check for links. The more links your article has the better it's potential in their eye's so it will appear at the top of searches more frequently. This is key to get people to view your articles, the more it's shown on search engines the more people will read it.

3rd- Spamming, google looks for useless links. If you create an article don't put links to everything else you've ever written under the sun because people will consider it a pain in the butt. You'll need links but only put links to articles that are related to the subject and put a link to a medium (Link to your Blog) that will allow people to find every other article you've written fast with personal info on you and what you currently are working on.

4th- Infomation Is Huge!!! The more accurate the info is the higher the odds also increase of using the article. Don't get half way done and start repeating yourself to make it look more useful. Go and do nessecary research to find the infomation you need to construct a good viable article that has potential of helping others understand what it is your addressing.

5th- Try to stay objective. If you write an article about why to do something or why not to try to stay objective and write an article on the other side of the aurgument then go back and try to disprove the other side wrong. using popular questions that may or may not break the others plan etc... This is good cause it provides your readers with multiple options and they have to form thier own opinion about what it is they are reading plus you get to add on useful links creating more traffic to your website and/or Article.

These are all important things that need to be looked at when writing someting thats going to be online. This is one of many things you can use to Increase Your Efficiency With Triond.

How to Write a Great Blog

A great blog can be written about any subject you just have to pick one. A great blog should be short and sweet and get directly to the topic of the blog. If your blog is about pretty fall flowers, don't write about anything other than pretty fall flowers.

A great blog should include white space; it helps to draw the reader's eye and attracts attention to the page. Your blog should also be readable. Sometimes people choose a cool, busy background or a dark background for their blog, and then they choose a font that does not show up clearly and makes the blog hard to read, avoid this. Color and backgrounds are fine as long as they do not interfere with the visibility of the words written. If it is hard to read, most people will move on to something more pleasing to the eyes.

A great blog should contain words that are correctly spelled and used. All computers do have some type of spell check so use it. It is there for a reason. After using spell check you still have to proofread the blog, words can be spelled correctly but still wrongly used in the article. For example a common mistake is "you" and "your", you may have meant to write something like "your pretty fall flowers", but you forgot to put the "r" on the end so "you" is not a misspelled word but "you pretty fall flowers" is wrong and doesn't really make sense so always read your blog over a few times just to make sure it correctly written. Also, if you are unsure of the meaning of a word don't use it. There are plenty of other words you can use in it's place.

A great blog should also include links. These links can be to other topic related blog or articles, they can be to retailers and businesses, they can also be to other web sites. Creating links in your blog is important and if you join the affiliate program connected to the links it can also help to rake in some extra cash.

Keep these things in mind when writing your blog and it will be a great blog, hopefully read by many.

Increasing Your Traffic and Earnings on Triond with Some Elbow Grease

Nothing is ever easy or just plain simple. Sometimes, you have to get dirty to make it worth it.

Marketing your articles on Triond is no easy task for most people, including the seasoned veterans. You have to know where to look, you have to open up your minds to another form of relay switch.

What I mean by all of this is to think outside the box. I know it sounds cliché, and maybe it is but, some of us need some help and we are not afraid to ask.

I was so honored that so many of my Triond friends and fans came to me for guidance.

I am going to let you in on a few points that I hope will make a difference in your traffic count. At least try one everyday and see if it helps.

Social Bookmarking

By now, everyone is familiar with term but, do you really know if it’s working for you? Bookmarking articles, on many occasions, only benefit’s the writer by cataloging your articles for future reference. Also, Bookmarking is a way for users to manage webpages for the sole purpose of sharing them with people we know.

Honestly, this is from my own experience now everyone so don’t get upset, I don’t bookmark as much as the next person. If you have hundreds of friends that will religiously read your work than that’s wonderful but, would you mind millions of people across the globe surfing on the internet reading your work? Hmm

This is why I spend more time submitting to the sites that will make even a greater difference in page views.

I have noticed that when I directly submit my URL to the link submission page for every search engine my articles get crawled even quicker than if I submit through the Triond submit link tool next to the article.

As writers, we want our articles presented to the masses as quickly as possible not only for exposure but, to make a little pocket change.

If you have a lot of time, check out these social networks:

Digg - Make lots of friends because this is the true driving force of this website.

Stumbleupon - Add a toolbar to your browser to submit every piece you read and write.

My Space

Url Submission

These are the direct links to the major search engines to get you noticed right away.

Google - Direct link to URL: submission

Yahoo - Direct link to URL: submission

Live - Direct link to URL: submission

Ask - You can’t submit to Ask. They will find your link through links from other sites. Make sure you included external links in your articles to receive the exposure.

Search Enginez - Submit to Google, Yahoo, and many others from one place.

Submit Express - This site will submit your URL to over 40 Search Engines for free!

Wisenut

Exact Seek

Jayde

Whatuseek

Scrubtheweb

The list goes on and on.

Submit RSS Feed

Rss Feeds are used to publish work that is frequently changing. It’s a great option for Triond users who are constantly getting comments and submitting new work.

If you are unfamiliar on the location of these feeds, just go to one of your articles and scroll to the bottom where is says Subscribe to RSS.

Click on Subscribe to Feeds and get this screen.

Copy the URL.

Submit the URL to Rss Directories like:

Feedburner

Feedest

One of my favorites. Submit as many as you can all at once.

Blogoculars

Live Blog Directory with Live News Feeds.

External Links (Hyperlinks)

I can not stress enough how important it is to include as many external links within your blog as possible, remembering to keep it tasteful and relevant.

What is an external link? These links travel back to webpages that are pertinent to the subject matter and of course the word that is highlighted.

Play around with these in your articles. This is the best way for your page to be indexed by the major search engines.

Internal Links

These are links within your blog that pertain to another article you may have written that’s related.

We see these all over Triond:

Try adding some more within your piece.

I know this is quite a bit of information to digest but, if you have the time and most of us don’t, try to use the best options for you. Stop spending so much time on one option. It’s a learning process for all of us. I am here for each and every one of you if you have questions on how to implement the tasks at hand.

This has now become an obsession of mine and I am hoping it makes a difference for you as well. After all, we are all here for the same reason, to write and have our voices heard by fellow writers aspiring for greatness.

Introduction to Web Design

eb design is a fascinating subject, and the central topic of many books and articles; therefore this article will focus on one small aspect of Web Design; the underlying code. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, and it is the code that underpins the whole Internet. Even HTML itself has been vastly expanded in the years since it was first conceptualized, so that we will take a look at only the very basics of the language. Do not be put off by the idea of it being code, in reality HTML is actually very easy to understand, so long as you approach it from the right angle.

HTML's origins began in 1980 when physicist Tim Berners-Lee, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) proposed a system for CERN researchers to use and share documents. This system was called ENQUIRE, and in that project was the seed that would eventually germinate into the World Wide Web. Nine years later Berners-Lee and CERN data systems engineer Robert Cailliau both submitted separate proposals for an Internet-based hypertext system similar in function to ENQUIRE. The WorldWideWeb (W3) project was accepted by CERN and kicked off the following year.

The HTML web standards have changed and adapted to new challenges and possibilities opened up by the expansion of the web. The journey has seen the World Wide Web proceed through a number of different paradigm shifts. Despite this the core of HTML is still almost the same as it once was, even if its role has changed, and would be very easily recognizable to someone from the early 90s (even if it would take them an hour to get their head around some of the major advances).

Understanding HTML easily is just a matter of understanding how documents were traditionally shared in the era of the early Internet (when it was just a small collection of Military and Education networks all linked together). Back then pages were shared as text files, and as such were limited in what they could convey. Pages would look something like this;

Imagine reading page after page of plain text, and you get some idea of what the early web was like. It was difficult to display subtle nuances and highlight areas of special interest so researchers began to add symbols to the text to highlight words and phrases:

But still, this solution was lacking, and was still rather difficult for the reader to pick up on the highlighting since it just blended into the rest of the text. The final solution proposed to solve this problem was a Markup Language. This language introduced codes which could be embedded in the text and would be read by the browser, telling it how to format the text. These codes (such as b for bold i for italic and u for underline) would be contained within triangular brackets, < > and would not be seen by the end user. Each tag would have an opening tag and ending tag (with a slash preceding the code). Hypertext in a document would look like this;

Would therefore be rendered:

As we have seen the simple markup added to the paragraph allowed the browser to format sections. Anything between each of the markup codes would be highlighted italic, underline, or bold, depending on which tag had been used. Because of the simplicity of HTML, a webpage can be made in word pad, by adding tags to the text and then saving it as a .htm file instead of .txt which will then open back up in the browser instead of text pad.

Moving back to the old days, each page was a single file that had to be looked up and opened. It was extremely difficult to refer to other documents. Tim Berners-Lee and the W3 consortium also tackled this by including the facility to refer to any point within the document and other external documents. Thus hypertext (and subsequently the world wide web) was born. The facility to refer to other documents was achieved through a simple tag - the a tag! A link in hypertext looks like:

'This is a link', would be displayed, and it would be be rendered in blue and underlined; something which everyone would soon come to associate with links. Clicking on it would take the user across the Internet to the other page (located at www.example.com). So we have seen how HTML was born, simply to fulfill a need, and once you understand that the rest becomes easier to understand. Having learned to make text bold, italic, and underlined, the rest is all easy. Everything you could possibly want to do has an HTML tag, and all you have to do is find the tag you need and use it. Here are a list of tags:

These tags can be used to format text, link to other documents, and add images to the web page, but our process of discovery does not end here. Even with these few tags we could create a functioning web page, and it would work, but webpages have a certain structure that needs to be followed, and we should learn that next.

Whenever we write web pages, we open up with an html tag which formally tells the browser that HyperText Markup Language will be in use.

Then we open up head and body tags. The head tags will contain information about the document (metadata) and the body tags will contain the document.

Notice how, whenever tags are contained within other tags we use a tab to nest them.

So the head tag contains information about the document while the body tag contains the document. Here's how it all fits together:

This should make some sort of sense. So congratulations, you've learned all about HTML... its origins and the needs it was created to fulfill. Now it's just a case of learning more formatting tags, and the subtleties of each.

As time progressed HTML, people realized, also had its own problems. Using basic HTML the layout and the text become inseparable, and over large websites this becomes a problem. Imagine you want to change the look of your website, and you have 50 pages - all of which you have to change! Later improvements to HTML added CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which allowed designers to separate 'style' from the 'content' so that the design could be stored in a separate document called a style sheet and used again and again throughout the website. Changes in a CSS would automatically show up in any web page that used it. But, let's not worry about all that yet.

Yet another week blurs past and here we are, time for another issue of SlackerDan the Internet Slacker's Websites to Waste Your Week. Let's raise a glass for unproductivity, shall we? And here we go:

Here's a great website chock full of stories from salespeople, IT people, etc, dealing with irate and often incredibly stupid customers. There's also a best of "popular quotes" section that is particularly amusing. Maybe you have some funny stories to contribute!

friv.com

This website has over 200 Flash and Shockwave games in a great layout. Just click on a button and the game loads. It'll take you many business hours to explore them all. Many business hours indeed.

Comboll game

Speaking of great games, here's Comboll! Tke objective is simple yet challenging: keep the ball bouncing off platforms; if you fall off the screen, you lose a life. There's also an active chat window and other games on this site.

[timebeat]

Need a soothing, relaxing moment? Try out timebeat, an innovative Internet clock. It plays soothing trance music along with a heatbeart. Why, you could probably fall asleep listening to this website. Or you could turn your computer speakers up really loud so the heartbeat from this site echoes throughout your entire workplace. Your choice.

Bin's Corner: Some people are great with cameras...

Here's a site with a page full of interesting pictures such as this one:

Almost all the pictures depict some cute animal doing something, well, cute. Good to show to other co-workers to make them stop working, too.

Is It Real or Fake?

This website shows some of the most famous pictures on the Internet and the history behind them. Some pictures are fake, some are real, and this site often includes other links to corroborate the story. All in all a very interesting article.

Tower of Bears

Here's a real time-waster! Fifteen teddy bears form a triangle, and your cursor knocks "em down. No matter how many times you knock them down, the teddy bears will leap up to form another pyramid. A fabulous time-waster, indeed.

Book-A-Minute

Now here"s a great idea: super-condense various famous books. And when I say super-condense, I mean it. Entire books are reduced to a few lines that accurately describe the story. There's science fiction, bedtimes stories, and classic literature.

Nikal

Another "concept" website here... or is it? By moving your cursor you create new lines that flow and change color. Very soothing, great for relaxing at your job or to make your boss scream when he sees you drawing lines while tranced out.

The Beast That Swallows Its Young

And in the fine tradition of closing off Websites to Waste Your Week, this week we have a great YouTube video by a talented guy named Matt Kresling. He miraculously turned debt collector's calls into music. Great tune and music video all around.

Red Alert: Web Design Disasters About to Eat You Up

Guys, I have seen tons of web sites that need brain surgery. Web-sites are to be made to look more professional, confident and inviting to rake in more sales. Since this is your store, your advertisement, your salesman, your brochure- you must put more energy into creating it to show professionalism and personality.

If your home page is nothing but pretty logo, with a sign “click here to enter”, then you are wasting the guest's valuable time. Nothing infuriates more than knocking on a door, and waiting forever before being attended to. Your home page must be precise, provide the useful information at once, no beating about the bush. Your competitor may just be a click away.

Let all links on your site be well defined so avoid using pictures as links. Don't assume everyone knows that pictures are links, as people interpret things differently. Using pictures makes the page look very ambiguous and unprofessional.

Similarly, don't assume just any visitor to your site will know what FAQ denotes. Make it distinct- “Frequently Asked Questions”. Depending on your target audience, avoid using slang.

Avoid laughable animations like plaque. They are distracting and irritating, making it uneasy to read what is offered. Don't distract your readers from your primary ambition -selling them your products.

If making profitable sales is your ambition, then make a link to your ordering page and home page on all pages. It's a disaster making it hard for visitors to find how to buy what they crave for.

Avoid jerky backgrounds, designing is good, but over-designing is a disaster! Make it simple, black text on white background. Columns can be used to enhance your web pages left and right, but leave the actual body black and white.

If your web site is nothing but offering links to other people's products, put in more effort by giving more details about the products you link to, the successes and how the prospective client will love to use them. Build people's confidence because no one will spend their hard earned money on products they can't trust.

Integrate the products you offer in an organized fashion so it makes sense. I have evaluated many sites and have found that the best way to design a web page for sales is to give priority to the top selling products and then offer the rest from visible links. People tend to get confused when you give them too many choices.

Most importantly, watch and be mindful of the sites you are linking to. For instance, will Facebook have a link to a porno site at the bottom of their web page? Your prospective customers will check you on everything. Only make links to the web sites you will be proud of.

Websites to Waste Your Week 8

And yet another week has passed and it's time to give you some fun links geared to lower your workplace productivity. Feel free to send a link to this list to your friends and family; hopefully they'll slack off too. And if we get enough people not slaving away at jobs because of this list, society itself will descend into anarchy! Cool. Anyways, here's the list:

Laser Game

Nothing more fun than lasers; well, okay, maybe there is, but you'll enjoy this game anyhow. You have to solve several puzzles by utilizing lasers and tools such as mirrors, refractors, splitters, and double mirrors to affect the laser's path to turn on lightbulbs. Challenging!

DVICE

Want to keep updated about the latest tech gadget? Well, check out DVICE. Their saying is "tech is our obsession", and I can't argue with that. Updated often, the geek in you will squeal with glee at the various gadgets DVICE reviews. Try not to squeal too loud, though.

Duck Hunt

Remember the classic game Duck Hunt for the Nintendo Entertainment System? If so, you'll enjoy this stroll down video nostaglia. Great game, but I always hate it when the dog laughs at me.

Triviaplaza

Nothing makes the day go by faster than some fun trivia quizzes. And this site is loaded with "em! All sorts of categories like literature, computer, and music quizzes.

Wanderlust

Bring out the explorer in you by reading up on famous expeditions at this website. Outstanding graphical interface showing you various historical expeditions. There"s some very interesting travel routes; in the words of this website, "...from Magellan to Keroac."

Letters to God

Have a laugh or two at this long list of children's letters to God. Kids sure do say the darndest thing, as the old saying goes. One letter: "Dear God: are you invisible, or is that just a trick - Lucy". Heh.

Unnecessary Knowledge

Ah, more trivia. This website spews out a random fact everytime you click refresh on your web browser. Did you know there are more pigs in Denmark than humans? Well, now you know.

50 Incredible Movie Posters From Poland

Here's a website that is interesting. Check out all the Polish movie posters of some very popular movies like "Apocalypse Now", "Raging Bull", and "The Fly". There's some great artwork here, some better I dare say of North American movie posters.

The Zoom Quilt

Now this is one interesting website, a virtual quilt you can zoom in... and zoom in... and keep zooming as the quilt artwork changes. And what artwork it is - very surreal as you move into the quilt.

Why Kubrick Used "Daisy" for Hal's Death

And in the fine tradition of the posting a video on "Websites to Waste Your Week", here's a fascinating look into why the film director Stanley Kubrick had the computer Hal sing "Daisy" as it was being shutdown:

Ol' SlackerDan hopes you enjoyed this week's issue, see you next week!

Websites to Waste Your Week 7

Welcome to another issue of Websites to Waste Your Week! There's always been a sort of gratification for a good listing of URL's to explore, so here are ten work-avoiding links in this seventh issue:

Castaway

A small, quick game where you are a castaway on a deserted island. Playing this game will take you back to the nostalgic days of the 70's and 80's when text-based games were all the rage. Will you be able to escape the island? Who knows, but it's better than working.

Deliver Me from Swedish Furniture

Ever wonder what your name would be if you were Swedish furniture? Now you can find out with this fun and easy website. It even had a name for me, ol' SlackerDan! Check it out:

Good to know I'm a table. Although, truth be told, I would've preferred being a bookcase. Ah well, Swedish tables are very important, you know.

Blue Flash: Homemade Roller Coaster

Now this is really cool: an innovative guy gets sick and tired of waiting in line for rollercoaster rides, so he builds his own in his backyard! Lots of pictures to see here of the Blue Flash, with people riding it happily. There's quite the lively debate taking place in the comments section, too. All-around a good article to read at work.

Merrily Fanciful

Webcomic time! I enjoy weird and twisted comics, and I think you'll find Merrily Fanciful chock full o' dark, sometimes slightly offensive webcomic strips. You'll find most of the content in their archives.

Picture for Sad Children

Speaking of webcomics, here's Pictures for Sad Children, another twisted and bizarre strip. Simplistic artwork, but still very funny. I like seeing successful comic websites where the art is mostly made up of stick figure people, because that's all I can draw myself dammit.

Apple Shooter

Now here's one sick yet grim funny Flash game. You're an archer trying to hit the apple off your friend's head. The more apples you hit, the more the distance increases. The highest level I've done is about four, I imagine you can do better.

Camhacker

Enjoy looking at cams? Here's a great site with literally hundreds if not thousands of webcams from all around the world. All of them seem safe for work, with cams looking out for beaches or streets, etc. A very extensive list of world-wide webcams!

Cat and Girl

A great webcomic about, well, a cat and a girl. But not your usual cat and girl, of course. This website has a long archive of comic strips, perfect for killing a few hours before quitting time at your job.

Cubicle Freakout

Lots of screaming in this one so you may want to turn down the volume; unless, of course, you want to make people in the office think you're having a nervous breakdown. The point of this game (there's a point?) is to throw all the stuff around your office and then heave the computer monitor out the window. Fun to fantasize about, even better as a game on the web.

Kitten Afraid of Remote Control Mouse

And now the closing video for this issue of Websites to Waste Your Week, I present to you a cute kitten. Enjoy, and see you next week.

Have a great week avoiding work! And don't blame me if the boss catches you. You can try, but I'll just look all innocent and everything.

Websites to Waste Your Week 6

Another work week lays ahead but fear not! SlackerDan is here with URL's o' fun to make the day go by before you know it. And that's really the purpose here, to stop you working. It's a conspiracy of one, i.e. me, to cut down your productivity through the following websites. If I get enough people not working, I'll rule the world! (probably not). So here we go:

Tromino Puzzles

Here's are two puzzles played with various shaped pieces to fill the board. This game reminds me of the classic Tetris, but the gameplay is quite different... and time-wasting!

Vectorpark

Want more inexplicable web games? Visit Vectorpark, which has numerous flash games requiring thought and logic in order to figure them out in the first place. Or if it's a game in the first place! A lot of fun & great time-wasting potential here.

The Boys and the Subway

Here is a very entertaining article written by Christoph Neimann, a multi-award winning graphic artist. He discusses and illustrates the obessession his two sons have with the subway system, how they love to ride it for hours, even memorizing subway maps! I imagine Mr. Neimann never gets lost on the subway when his two sons accompany him.

Dino*Run

Great 8-bit style game where you're a dinosaur trying to outrun the inevitable pyroclastic cloud of doom. I don't know if this game is win-able, since dinosaurs didn't do too well in real life filled with fiery boulders and lava-belching volcanos.

WriteSomething

Here's a neat website, something not unlike an Internet graffiti board. You write something and it gets published. It's quite fascinating (or unsettling) to read what other maniacs out there on the "net have written.

Abstruse Goose

A webcomic that made me laugh, and the other strips over at Abstruse Goose are quite teh funny.

101 Classic Computer Ads

Just like the title says, here are 101 classic computer ads great for nostalgia and attacks of "the good ol" days of computing".

BestViral

If lots of videos make you happy, visit BestViral. They have lots of funny & weird videos to watch. Lots of classic vids too, like that guy singing "Chocolate Rain", etc, God help us all.

Hypnotic Image

Nothin' like staring at a hypnotic image until work is over. This animated gif is very hypnotic and should be good for a few hours of staring at until you feel your frontal lobes begin to swell.

And in the fine tradition of the Websites to Waste Your Week, here's an embedded entertaining video for your perusal. Thanks to the fine folks at GameVee, here's a funny vid of trainsurfing:

I hope you enjoyed this week's installment of productivity-killing links! Remember, if the boss catches you with this article, blame the Internet, not me.
