Website Seo: Free Seo Optimization Tips and Tricks for Beginners

The real disheartening part of getting your website out there and noticed by the world is actually "getting it noticed". You could have just completed the best ten page mini site in the world, full of insightful tips and information about a subject that could benefit millions but......if you haven't played the numbers game and put in the grunt work, your site will most likely see a mere trickle of visitors throughout its entire lifetime on the web.

It truly is criminal, that a site that has brilliant content but no real seo, in other words link building. Can sit and remain invisible, yet some piece of crap with some bundled duplicate content and a few dozen decently placed links, can in actual fact receive far more visitors. We hear all the time that goggle’s ultimate wish is user relevancy, yet so far there are thousands of people out there still able to massively take advantage of the loop holes that exist within goggles’s infamous and legendary algorithm.

So, to make good on the title of this article, learning some important free tips and tricks that will set beginners on the right path with free search engine optimization. Try to keep these points in mind and in the correct order when embarking on a new project, whether that is a static mini site, sales page or blog. These will prove to make the transition from nowhere to somewhere a lot smoother and quicker.

Content relevancy and keywords

This is fairly self explanatory. When you are writing your content, keep it highly relevant to the subject matter. Don't start rambling off, the closer you keep to the point, the better it will be spidered and ranked. Make sure that all your main keywords are evenly placed throughout your pages content and kept strictly in context to the surrounding text. Over doing the keyword density doesn't seem to cut it anymore. Keep your writing natural. The days of stuffing each and every page with dozens of the same keyword over and over are long gone. Thanks to the new technology of latent semantic indexing, we may actually one day reap the rewards of good content and not just good marketing and link building campaigns.

Use the title tag and the long tail keyword search

This is one of your biggest weapons in gaining a decent page ranking. Some seo experts claim that you need little more that a good title tag and some links to climb the search engines. Make sure your main keyword(s) are at the beginning of the title, with any relevant smaller competition keywords planted in the correct context in the rest of the title. This is a heavyweight weapon for getting picked up in the searches. Using this method will ensure that you reap the rewards of the longtail search element. Never just put the main keyword on its own, this is a criminal waste. As your site or blog gain more credibility in the search engines. More and more searches will pick up your unique title's Long tail set of relevant keywords.

Keep your content as close to the top of your page's source code as possible

There is a school of thought that states the google spider is only interested in the first few hundred characters of every page it spiders. So if your page content is buried at the bottom of countless ads, snippets of javascript and navigation lists, then it may get less spidering that hoped for. There are arguments for and against this but it never hurts to bear it in mind.

Link building - the dark art that doesn't have to be

Finally, yes although it pains me to say this, there really is no other aspect of a website’s chances of page rank longevity as link building. As sad as it is, reminding ourselves of our discussion earlier, a beginner to building websites could have the greatest content in the world but with no links they might as well be circling Pluto. The key to a decent link campaign is to hit the big guns right out the starting gate. Submit you site to some of the bigger free web directories. The point of this article is not to waste time listing them. A simple search such as "top free web directories" should suffice.

Next, leverage the awesome power of the top article sites. You really shouldn't bother with anything other than Ezine articles, Go articles and Article dashboard. Not only are the page ranks links of most of the other sites, weaker than a cup of cats urine, you will most likely raise a search engine red flag for spamming your own site in order to try and gain forced rankings (which you are) but its all about taking a little time, don't submit all your links in one go and for the love of god ALWAYS ALWAYS vary your anchor text. Not only that but make sure you vary the content around your anchor text as well.

Google is thinking more like a human everyday, so it is all about making everything look as natural as possible. Hopefully one day, the perfect search engine will exist, one that will tell the difference between a piece of half written duplicate crap, designed purely for climbing the rankings, stuffed with adverts. Compared to a page of pure well thought out highly literate highly relevant content, designed to enhance the readers life in some way. Till then, it is half about playing the numbers game and half writing it like you mean it.

Driving Internet Surfers to Your Website

Driving traffic to a website/blog is very important; especially to those who earn in their pages/posts. And search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft (MSN) are the best and most cost-effective ways to drive people to your website/blog. There are two sources of search engine traffic, one is the organic search and the other is paid search. In this article we will focus on the organic search.

How Search Engines Rank Web Pages/Posts

The rank of web pages/post on search engines are comes from a SEO's reverse engineering the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP's). And they do a somewhat complex matter. Why? Because they essentially type in a keyword, review the results returned, then closely examine the websites that rank well. They look for patterns and information that may indicate why a particular website has a high ranking, then share this information with other SEO's through blogs, forums and other mediums to try and validate their findings. Now, once there is an informal consensus about a specific technique or strategy, it becomes widely accepted as a SEO Theory. Then these theories are published on white papers, patent applications, and research projects, which give additional clues as to how they rank websites/blogs. And these publications only provide a few pieces of the puzzle, but provide valuable insight.
In addition, if we start discussing the technical details and algorithms that power search engines it would be more complex. However, some webmasters get lost in these details and forget that search engine optimization is really only about two things: (1) writing quality content containing your keywords and (2) getting important websites with similar content themes to link to your website. These two things are much easier said than done, but to illustrate that search engine optimization is not overly complicated. If these two things get right, a website/blog will be 90% optimized.

What to Expect from Search Engine Optimization

To be realistic it is not good to expect of achieving a good ranking overnight. Search engine optimization takes a lot of time and patience. It could take anywhere from weeks to months to achieve a top 10 ranking. And there are no shortcuts. You can't buy your way to the top or get instant results. And it's also important to understand that the search engines are constantly changing their algorithms in an attempt to improve their relevancy and filter out spam. You may rank well today, but could lose your position tomorrow after a search engine update. But that's just part of the game. Search engine optimization is a lot of work, but can pay big dividends. The traffic you receive from organic search doesn't cost you anything and the only investment required here is your time.

Draw Those Customers to Your Site

The current increase in SEO produced articles are created in an effort to effectively drive traffic to ones website, optimize for search engines and to establish a rudimentary form of credibility. It is without doubt one of the better means of increasing the outside flow of hits to your site that has been created in recent years. More and more people around the world are data conscious today and as such are seeking specific information making article writing the major method of generating large streams of viral traffic heading to your website as well as providing an outlet which allows more publishers to publish your written articles upon their sites. This article proliferation tends to place your name and site in the spotlight of hundred and perhaps thousands of potential clients.

What actually makes SEO produced articles so productive is that they generate a vast number of targeted traffic being drawn to your website from a mere link in your article by people who have an interest in what you have on your site. By following the link you have placed in your SEO article they are arriving at your website to see what you have to offer them and are under the assumption that you are knowledgeable about what you are doing.

Every one of the articles which you manage to get published represent some brilliant advertising concerning your website due to the fact that at the conclusion of your article you are permitted to place a link to your site and information relating to yourself as the author. By your act of placing this information at the end of your article you are portraying yourself as an expert in your field and building a reader base which leads people to your website.

Often times a good SEO editor would place a link at this point to an area that provides some free information of value to the reader relating in a sense to the subject of your article. If the page is created effectively you can obtain a name and email address from this link. This tends to be a great way of creating an effective mailing list.

An additional advantage of writing these articles lie in the simple fact that all of this is accomplished free of charge. The price runs rings around the Pay per Click type of advertising that many websites tend to employ. The more articles that you write the more known you are as an expert and thus the more your site traffic will increase.

As an example of just how effective this can be imagine for one moment that you write three articles per month. These articles are then distributed to perhaps 120 submission sites and ultimately selected for publication on 4 additional sites. If you only obtain 6 additional hits monthly to your website as a result of your article you end up with 8,400 additional hits per month. Do the math and you will see that it can add up rather quickly.

So it only stands to reason that if you are failing to draw the customers to your site you need to overhaul your SEO program and start getting the traffic that you rightfully deserve.

10 SEO Tips

Backlinks

Backlinks are vital, if not the only thing that you should spend most of your SEO time on. Backlinks are links pointing to your site from other websites. They are used highly in ALL Search Engine Algorithms, and are one of the key factors, if not the most important factor, which decides which sites to rank higher than other websites.

Title Tag

For all of the pages on your site, make sure they have a unique title tag. One of the most important things to determine what a page is about for search engine spiders is the title tag, so it must be unique for all your pages, and make sure it matches the content on what the page is about or visa versa. Its very important to make sure each page is unique in sense of the title tag.

Choose the Right Keywords

You could spend 6 months optimising a website for your chosen keywords, and now you could even rank no.1. Congratulations, but remember, its only worth being the top if people actually search for it. This is what must be at the start of every SEO campaign, choosing rank able keywords that are searched for, and are relevant to what your website offers. So many companies go out there choosing any old keyword, and expect it will bring them lots of clients and visitors when it ranks highly. If its not a searched for phrase, you WONT get traffic!

Unique Content

If your site is just simply copying articles from other websites, lets face it, you are never going to get anywhere. You could be faced with duplicate content issues, and your site will never get the authorative respect you could earn if you wrote your own content. Here at ViperChill, we submit all our articles to other sites in order to gain links from those sites. However, we also have a Blog which is full of fresh, unique content which we also get credited for. Unique content is a must to set you apart from the rest, and keep your website with a good chance in the "game" of SEO.

Updating Content

Its important to keep content updating regularly. Search Engines' love content, they want to index as much unique content as they can to fill their servers with, in order to have the largest possible variety to display to users of its search. If you constantly update your content, search engine spiders are going to constantly come back to your site with the expectation there will be more content for them to spider, and you will notice your site new pages being indexed quicker, and your site overall spidered more often.

Linking

Make sure that you have some form of good link structure on your site, so that not only visitors, but also search engine spiders can find additional pages of your website to spider and indexed in its database. Linking is a great way to increase internal links to your pages, and get new pages spidered quickly. This encourages spiders to look deeper into your website for more pages and more information, so that you get a good deep index.

Let your Keywords Shine

Its very important that for relevancy and good on page optimisation of your website, that your keywords you are aiming a certain page towards, gets full attention. The best way to do such things could be to use tags to let search engine spiders know the word is important, you can also use tags as to not affect the readers experience, but still let the search engine spiders know that certain text is of more importance. Be careful to make sure you dont do this in excess - about 5 times on a page is the maximum recommended.

Create a Sitemap

This can be a html sitemap you have created yourself, or it can be a generated xml sitemap you can submit to the likes of Google. A sitemap is a list of all the pages in your site so that they are easily findable for search engine spiders, and that all pages get indexed, or at least spidered.

Don't Keyword Stuff / Spam

Don't stuff your keyword descriptions and meta information with keywords. This is a possible penalisation penalty in search engines and you really dont want that to happen. Have a fair number of keywords, making sure they are all slightly modifications of each other, and include a maximum of 10 per page, that way you can make sure you are not keyword stuffing, yet still have a good range of keywords in there at the same time!

Optimise your Site for Visitors, Not Search Engines

At the end of the day, its the visitors who need to know the most about a website. If theres keywords all over the place, and its un-readable, people aren't going to come back to your site. It's all about the visitors first, and spiders second. So make it for the visitors, then any "tweaks" you can make to SEO optimise the pages is a bonus!

Advertising and SEO

In today’s net-savvy world, it has become common for any business to have a website, which they use mostly for advertising their products and services. With the advent of search engines, it has become even easier for the customers to search for the stuff online. For a website to be successful, its link should land in the first three pages which the search engine brings and the rank of the page should be high which means many visitors come to the site. This can be achieved by applying search engine optimization or popularly known as SEO. This is a marketing strategy, which increases the quality and quantity of traffic flow to a particular website via search engines.

SEO not only affects the search engine results, but also image search, video search and industry specific vertical search engines. It determines how a search algorithm functions and searches what is popular with people. When a website link is submitted to a search engine, a spider crawls through a page to gather links, which lead to other pages, and stores those pages on the server of the search engine. The information collected from these pages is sent to the indexer, whose job is to extract information from those pages such as the keywords and their weights, the location of the page and other links that are stored for the spider to crawl in future.

In the beginning, the search engine optimizer algorithms were dependent on the keywords, Meta tags, and index files provided by the Webmaster. Meta tags provided information about a particular page, but using them for indexing the pages did not prove to be successful as some Webmasters added irrelevant Meta tags to increase the number of hits and earn huge ad revenue. They even changed the HTML of the web pages to achieve a good rank for the page. However, this was a case of abuse as it fetched irrelevant pages.

Search engines then began utilizing complex ranking algorithm, which were difficult for the webmasters to manipulate to provide web surfers with genuine results. The rank of the web page was calculated mathematically by functions using strength and quantity of the inbound links. The higher the rank of the page the more chances it had to be viewed by a person. Later algorithms were developed which considered various other on-page factors such as rank and off-page factors such as hyperlink. Since the webmasters could not manipulate the page rank, they began exchanging, selling and buying links, which lead to link spamming and even creation of numerous sites dedicated for this purpose.

Algorithms became more complex by every passing day and top search engines kept their algorithms a secret. As the cost of SEO increased, advertisers were roped in to pay for it, which finally resulted in high quality web pages. Although investing in SEO is very fruitful, but at the same time is risky because without any prior notice, the algorithms being used are bound to change and the search engine will stop directing visitors to the page. Many consultants are available in the market that provides SEO services. They manipulate the HTML source code of the web site like menus, shopping carts and sometimes even the content of the website to draw more traffic. Search engines like Yahoo has algorithms that extract pages not according to the page rank but according to the cost per click or set fee, that is if a advertiser desires that the page containing his ad be displayed, he is expected to pay money for it. This is a point of controversy, as only the big businesses will be able to increase the number of hits of their page but not the small business who might be having a better quality page.

Google Ad Words explores ads that have words typed in the search box by the surfer. The Million Dollar Homepage started the concept of Pixel advertising, which is a graphical kind of advertising. Depending on the pixels, the space is sold to the advertiser. Keyword advertising involves advertisers who buy URLs of a site and place their ads at that location. Thus, SEO is a market in its own that is yielding great results for businesses on Internet.

What Every SEO Content Writer Should Know

Having knowledge on SEO techniques is important for an SEO content writer to be offered more paid writing opportunities and gigs. A lot of internet and online business owners are looking for reliable SEO content writers. These marketers expect that the writers would be able to generate or create high quality SEO-rich web copy and articles. These of course are geared towards generating large audience towards their websites that would most likely increase their revenue on sales.

Websites who cater to both advertisers and bloggers are now becoming popular. One of the most popular is Payperpost. Paid Websites like these, allow bloggers to earn money by writing and promoting the services and products of the advertisers. Advertisers on the other hand, gain more audience and popular. For a freelance writer, to have more writing opportunities available to him, he needs to have a good page rank on his own site. Advertisers know that one of the most important aspect in the success of their business is to hire an SEO content writer who could give surfers exactly what they need - a content that is worth reading. They know that their business cannot be successful without a high caliber written material that uses a combination of both keywords and writing style that's acceptable to both search engines and readers.

An SEO writer should also know how to publish materials and articles that would keep readers interested in reading further, and in finding out more.

SEO writing is an art that is not that easy to learn, yet not too difficult and impossible to achieve. It is about the way an SEO content writer constructs and weaves the sentences in his article in an efficient manner. Furthermore, it is about the placement of words, the compatibility of the content to both humans and search engines, the use of the right keyword density and the addition of other relevant words into the main copy. A skillful and intelligent SEO content writer also specializes on a particular topic or field that suits his interest, background and passion. It would not be a good idea to have someone write on your products and services, even if the writer has no mark of interest on it. The result would appear to be too stiff and scripted, thus destroying the intended purpose of the written article you paid for.

For an online business to be at par with other websites offering the same products and services, the owner should know how SEO marketing works. Every successful website owner knows that finding an SEO content writer is the most important website asset he could ever invest on. Your goal of making your website successful in the future wouldn't be too hard to reach once you realize that a good SEO writer is all I takes for your website to reach a high mark with Google and at the same time for your products and services to become more visible to web surfers.

There are different means by which you could create buzz on your website and on what you are offering - whether you are selling products like cellular phones, accessories, cars, gadgets and beauty products or services like sponsoring websites, designing templates, delivery services etc. The internet as wide and popular as it is nowadays, could be a great medium where you can promote whatever it is you would like to sell. Instead of spending millions on television advertisements and promotions, you might want to consider hiring SEO writers to do the advertising or marketing for you.

10 Essential Google Search Tips & Valuable Tricks (for Smarter Surfers)

In my last session, "10 Life changing websites and RSS feeds", I discussed the power of information and how it is now possible to get the most relevant information within the shortest period possible. I would like to extend that same concept by explaining some very useful yet lesser known Google operators. These ten search operators, when used in the right manner, will enable you to declutter and sort the countless web pages which show up on your search results page.

intitle

If you want to search for something and you know that it would be in the title then you can use this field. Just enter in the title: ”your search item” into Google and hit enter. It will return the search results with the search word on the title of the page. Suppose you want to search for rules for Google search and you vaguely remember some article you once read called golden rules of google searching. You can give your search query as:

intitle:Golden Rules of Google searching

If you put your search words in quotes then Google will treat it as a single word and you will get much better search results:

intitle:”Golden Rules of Google searching”

inurl

Searches can be done for urls using this following operator. If you want to find the search string in the URL of the website, then you enter something like:

inurl:golden.rules.of.google

Please note here that I have put “.” in between the words. “.” This period acts as a wild card and can replace any other symbol such as a hyphen or an underscore. This search will in turn bring all the pages which have both: golden-rules-of-google and golden_rules_of_google.

filetype

This is my favorite operator. Using this, you can search for a specific file type in the internet. Suppose you want to search for a document for linux and you only desire PDF file types. The query you should enter into Google is as follows:

filetype:pdf linux

If you want to search for mp3 music to download, type filetype:mp3 and the artist name followed by that. This search will fetch you any such mp3 file in the pages which Google has crawled.

link

The Link operator is another very useful tool. It is used to find the webpages which have a link to a specific URL. Suppose I have a blog and I want to find out how many pages link to this page. All I need to do in this case is use the link operator. Please note that unlike other operators, we are not going to give a search word for this operator. Instead we are going to give a full URL, something which looks like this:

link:http://www.xxxxx.com

This will give you an indication as to the popularity of the page.

inanchor

The inanchor operator is similar to the URL operator, but it is used to help you find the text which is included inside an anchor or a link. For example, if you want to find out all anchors which have the know-how to do speed squaring using vedic mathematics, then you should type:

inanchor:"Speed Squaring using Vedic mathematics"

This will locate all the anchors that have got a link built up under that phrase.

daterange

Daterange will search for pages which were published between the specified two dates. This comes handy when we have to find out pages which are more recent, but it is more difficult than you might think. The catch here is that we have to pass the dates in Julian format. The julian date is the number of days passed after January 1st 4713 BC. For example, the date September 11, 2001, is represented in Julian terms as 2452164. So, to search for pages that were indexed by Google on September 11, 2001, and contained the word “crash” the query would be:

daterange:2452164 - 2452164 “crash”

This will report all those pages Google crawled in that time frame which had the word crash in it.

related

This is a superb operator which is quite fun to use. Suppose you discovered a very useful website, for example: Dictionary and you are wondering what other sites might be used as an alternative for this one. In short, you need to find out all those sites which are similar to dictionary.com. You can do just that using the related operator. I am going to show you the sites which are related to Google . For that, I am going to write the below query in google:

related:www.google.com

Just have a look which one comes first in the list.

phonebook

There are many operators which I discussed earlier which can be used for evil purposes. I did not cover those operations as I did not want anyone to get into any trouble. This is one such thing. I am covering this because there is a workaround for the problem. The phone book operator can be used to find both the official and residential phone numbers of people. Three operators can be used for the phonebook search: rphonebook, bphonebook and phonebook, which will search residential listings, business listings, or both, respectively. A query such as:

phonebook:abc def ny

would list both business and residential listings for abc def in New York. If you're concerned about your address information being in Google's databases for the world to see, have no fear. Google makes it possible for you to delete your information so others can't access it via Google. Fill out the form at www.google.com/help/pbremoval.html and your information will be removed, usually within 48 hours.

insubject

This nifty little operator will allow you to search google groups by the subject line. Suppose you are facing some problem with the Windows XP startup and you want to see the threads in Google groups which have discussed it. All you need to do is type in:

insubject:”windows xp startup”

and Bingo, all that information will be presented in front of you. Please make sure that you are inside the google groups search page before attempting this query, otherwise it might not work correctly.

define

This operator can be used if you don't have any dictionary at your disposal and you want to quickly decipher some professional jargon or find the meaning of a rather difficult word that you have never heard before. How about the word abracadabra? Have no fear, just go to Google and type in:

define:abracadabra

And there you are, Google comes up with all the definitions it can find, selected just for you.
