Technorati is by far the best alternative to Google. The 'blog search' allows you to search the hottest blog items, including a list of 'most-linked-to' blogs, a top searches list, as well as movies, music, games and videos that most bloggers link to. It is user-friendly as you can sort results according to timeliness (based on the newest content) or blogs with more inbound links.

Draze MetaSearch

Just like a typical Google page, this site allows you to search results from Google, Yahoo! and MSN quickly. You can choose to view the results from either one of the search engines. There is a 'Peek-a-Boo' feature that gives you page previews so that you do not have to click through unnecessary pages.

Rollyo

stands for Roll Your Own Search Engine. It allows you do category or general searches to get results from the Web or blogs. You may also create your own search engine if you intend to search only specific sites.Rollyo

Clusty

Clusty collects the results from several search engines (excluding Google) and arranges them in clusters to further refine your search. For instance, a search for Sony Vaio returns clusters such as various Sony Vaio model numbers, reviews and prices.

Focusing on "subject-specific popularity", this site is rich in features. It orders results by 'popularity' among pages considered to be experts on the topic of your search. The 'page-preview' and 'editorially selected smart answers' are its best features.

Chacha

At Chacha, you can chat with a real-life professional by submitting your query, and he will return you with results that are customised to your needs and specifications. The service is free and you can have a whole lot of fun.

Scour

Scour aggregates the results from Google, Yahoo! and MSN. There is a social element where users can 'vote' the results up or down.

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon lets you rate pages and sites that you visit with the thumbs-up/thumbs-down icons in your toolbar. Once it learns your preferences, it becomes better at directing you to the topics you like. You can also add friends to your list. Their preferences will help to further refine your search results. This website is great for finding content that you may not be able to find elsewhere.

Kosmix

This search engine is based on searches by category, including politics, finance, health, travel, autos, video games, etc. It scored better with less-time sensitive issues and search terms. For example, it provided lots of information (prevention, cures and risk factors) on health-related topics.

Can't Find on Google

If you can't get any result for your search query on Google, you may post it here and wait for another user to help you. However, the response-to-post ratio is not very high as there are too many queries. But it is still worth a try if you are desperately looking for something that you can't find on Google.

This site is targeted at schools and students. Each site listed in the search results has been specifically selected by educators whose aim is to ensure safe surfing.

Sometimes you really, really want to see that page - it sounded so interesting, after all!  Then you get the 404 message and your head starts to ache.  Why on earth create the page just to take it away again?  It's so not fair!  The message is, put simply, a standard response code.  It indicates to the user that they were able to get through to the server of the site they are attempting to access but said server could not find what they had requested.

Why have a computer generated graphic when you can turn the 404 in to something approaching art.  There isn't even an expletive in sight as this generous minded techie takes us through the various reasons we may have got the message.  It is strange that an artist such as Banksy has not taken the 404 to heart, considering its penetration of our collective mindset!

404s can also occur when a server is configured not to carry out the request for the page and does not reveal why.  The message "Server Not Found", however, is completely different.  It means that no connection could be made in any way, shape or form to the destination server.

Zivity is a slightly risqué website.  Why its 404 page is so coy is a mystery, but at least it doesn't accuse you of inbred stupidity, like many websites!  404 being the area code for Southern Alberta in the United States of America is quite enough already, thank you!

When a request is made from a web browser for a web page (HTML document) then a server is required to respond.  What you see, instead of your requested page, is an email-like message with a numeric response.  The first 4 indicates a client error (that's you!). This could be as simple as a mistyped URL.

The failboat indicates that the page you have requested is not found.  This is a combination of the 404 message and the "Fail" culture, similar to Lolcats, that has over or underwhelmed (depending on your sense of humor and appetite for repetition) the internet recently.  While on the subject of transport, 404 is also the name of a route which traverses Maryland in the USA.  There might be a slight frisson of amusement for any computer (il)literate person who gets on to this particular route.

German books are as sensible as the German people.  It would be great to see a real book with this message on the four hundred and fourth page, though it could be imagined that after a very short time it might become a little tedious!  Incidentally, talking of books, it was in 404 AD that the Buddhist monk Huiyan wrote the book "On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings".  It was one of the first written arguments about why the state and religion should be separate.  This was in China, which has certainly succeeded in that in the last century or so, but perhaps not in the way that Huiyan was imagining!

The dead duck of dead ducks has had the rise taken out of him so systematically on the internet that it is almost possible to feel a little sorry for him.  Perhaps not, but this Mister President will certainly not be left holding the baby.  Perhaps, though, history will be a kinder judge than his contemporaries?  Or perhaps not!

After the first 4 of the 404, the next two digits indicate to you tat there is a specific error encountered.  This three digit coding echoes similar usage in earlier protocols, such as NNTP and FTP.

This was no doubt irresistible to the weary traveler who had to lay his head down in room 404 of an hotel somewhere in the world.  This is one of about a zillion pictures on the same theme that can be found out there, but the cheekiness of the message left on the board is such that it cannot fail to raise a smile.  However weak and feeble the smile, a small one at least.  No?

The marketing people at this stadium may have thought it would be a hoot to put the advertisement for which Yahoo had probably paid thousands of dollars next to the empty advertizing space listed as 404.  No doubt the smile was on the other side of their face when Yahoo demanded its money back!  Whether a knowing attempt at a sly dig or a completely innocent mistake, this one would have had raised a few eyebrows!

Darth Vader gets his own take on the 404 with a broken light saber.  The combination of Star Wars and the internet is difficult to resist!  However, the 404 message can often be a little extreme - blaming the user in no uncertain terms and calling them names that would make even politicians and bankers blush.  It is often not the user who is responsible for the error.  It is interesting to note, then, that the last gladiatorial combat took place in the Roman coliseum in the year 404.  The pesky went from being fed to the lions to changing the rules altogether, the spoilsports!

This Mailbox has seen much better days!  Perhaps it hasn't been found by its owners for a few years.  Meanwhile at the HTTP level, 404s are usually followed by a reason that can be read by you.  Many web servers issue an HTML page (a web page) that simply states that the page cannot be found.  Although this phrase is customized rarely, is sometimes misleading as the user thinks that they have mistyped the URL and try again.  And again and again.  This often results in the manual removal of a PC through a window, known as defenestration to many.

The Times online got a little more honest with its 404.  The page isn't ready to be seen (even though it probably exists) so they put up a message instead which says that they have all gone to the pub.  This is terribly British humor but was, quite likely, true.

It has to be noted here that it is not always the poor computer user's fault that they have received a 404.  The URL they have requested could be completely accurately typed in to their browser.  Often, pages have been moved or deleted altogether.  In the case of the former, then a 301 response would have been far more appropriate.  In the latter, a 410 ("gone") response would have been much better.  However, these responses need the website's servers to be specially configured and out of sheer laziness the 404 has become the prevalent, if somewhat sloppy, response.

The Failwhale takes a variation on the current trend for "FAIL" memes and adds its own twist with a little rhyming.

The British Telecom Group in 2004 deployed a locking system known as "Cleanfeed" and incorrectly used the 404 message.  This blocked any pages that had been deemed or identified as illegal by Big Brother, sorry, the Internet Watch Foundation.  So, the pages were there but the user was not allowed to view them because they contained material that was, if bought on printed paper, liable to get the reader more than just a slapped wrist.

From Whales to Wales!  This beautiful country, just to the left of England (both politically and geographically!) has more mammals of an ovine nature than those classified as sapiens.  A place, as the saying goes, where women are women, men are men and the sheep are afraid.  This 404 was found in the country's middle region, near the small town of Aberystwyth.  Perhaps this is the herbivore's attempt to make herself "not found" before she can be used and abused!  Perhaps it worked, but it is expected that this lamb was still for the chop pretty soon afterwards!

The Computer Technicians may well have arranged their lab to be situated in room 404.  With tongues fairly firmly rooted in their cheeks, of course!  You may also receive a 404 message if you try to access what is known as a dead link.  It can also be called a broken link or - rather provocatively - a dangling link.  The link may also be dead because of firewalls or content filters not allowing access to the page.

The Twitter guys took the concept of the internet meme of lolcats, which continues to be irrationally popular to produce a number of its incredibly popular 404 messages.  People would actually type in the wrong URL in order to see one of the various 404 pussy messages that were produced over the space of a few years.  Of dear!  It is akin to the advertisements being better than the shows on the television!

Such is the incursion in to our culture of the 404 that it is even appearing on clothing.  What it actually says about the person who wears 404 on their chest is another thing entirely.  Perhaps a great T shirt to buy just before you start college if your intention is to ingest substances both natural and man made that may render you "Not found" in terms of your general level of consciousness, cognition and presence in class!

While most people say that they couldn't live without the internet once they have been exposed to it for a year or two and succumb to its charms, many public libraries must rue the day that a certain Mr Berners-Lee had his bright idea.  Chelmsford library, however, have kept up with the times and when their users attempt to get to a book which they do not have in stock, then they get this message.  So, it's not your traditional 404, but it certainly indicates that librarians have a sense of humor too!

Ontario International airport, like many others, has its own 404.  One would be a little unsettled to go through this gate.  Have any film makers, doing an airport disaster movie, had the notion to make the departure gate 404?  Answers on a postcard, please!  Perhaps the passengers on the TV series "Lost" made their way on to their fatal flight through gate 404!

A list wouldn't be a list these days with at least one Photoshop fan's take on the subject.  Here, the road is not found.  Ah, the path less travelled and so on!  Perhaps this is not unlike link rot, which is when the links on a page gradually lead nowhere.  This is when the sites to which they link change content, disappear altogether or go to new locations.  The road to nowhere, indeed!

Flickr has been around over years and has grown more fun. It helps that the digital photography's gone towards its milestone over many years. It is hard not to favor of Flickr as it is more interesting and an easy service to use. It is owned by Yahoo. Now, the Yahoo's Mail account has become much better than its crappy Yahoo! Photos!

It is easy to sign up for Flickr. As long as you are a member of Yahoo, you are given an opportunity to sign up here unless you aren't averse to join Yahoo. At your first attempt to sign up, you will be acknowledged that Flickr is a member of Yahoo's happy family. Hence, you are asked to sign up for a Yahoo account first. I mean, if you are not a member of Yahoo but you already have a slew of other accounts, it just simply means irksome for you. However, once you get pass this hassle, Flickr appears to be a breeze for you. You don't have to get annoying to start venturing this website as there are helpful little hints here and there to get you started, and since there are so many people on Flickr already, it is likely you will have someone to bug for tech support.

Flickr makes uploading and posting your digital images very much hassle-free. The Flickr Windows integration makes uploading as simple as a right-click. By installing the Flickr app, there will be an additional "Send to Flickr" command in the right-click menu.

It is all very easy and very streamlined but you need to accustom with the terms Flickr uses for its photostreams. Or else, once you have uploaded a few photos, you will very soon get hang of it.

Flickr has an outstanding social aspect. You get to see the latest pictures from your contacts on logging in. Its start page is relatively simple, fast-loading mix of your pictures, your contact's pictures and recently uploaded snaps. It is certainly popular with third-party app makers - you can embed Flickr feeds onto your websites, access Flickr from your desktop or Facebook.

For most users, they are satisfied with the services provided by a free account at Flickr. However, for serious snappers, they should consider about going Flickr Pro which is offered for a reasonably low price at US$24.95 a year as compared to pay a Webshots. Flickr Pro's account allows you to store high-resolution versions of your photo online. Apart from that, it gives you unlimited storage and photosets as opposed to a Free account's three photosets and 100MB per month bandwidth.

Flickr is arguably the most advanced in its features as far as integration with other services. All in one, fast interface, quick loading and community feel with a huge variety of other supports and services for third party apps are indeed hard to beat by other online photo sharing sites!

When Google bought Picasa, they decided to make it fully a part of the Google family by adding the overly documentations into its Google Wikibase. As a comparison, when Yahoo bought Flickr, they didn't make it more Yahoo alike as Frickr still has the authority to maintain its own friendly identity that is separated from the Yahoo family. And it seems that, Flickr works well for Yahoo as it has emerged as one of the famous photo sharing sites. For Picasa, though its download site is 5.8MB which is not too big by any means but its instructions just to learn how to use it is sometimes appeared to be annoying.

Though I am half declined to use this website immensely, it deserves my interest to visit this website. It is wonderful enough to insert pictures to its database while creating new images even while Picasa is opened. Certainly, it makes a wonderful computer organizer for your photos. The good thing about Picasa is that it has a fantastic photo-editing feature, making you forgive it for its troublesome which is particularly dealing with its overly wordy documentations.

With Picasa, you can preview and see every image on your PC by folder in a quick and easy manner. That means you could view them in selected batches and in slideshow formats. You can crop, correct red-eye, alter color, straighten, fill light as well as fix contrast with its more-fun-bit effects! This is all done by simply pressing at the various pretty buttons. The neutral color pickers, color temperature, highlight and shadow pickers are other innovative features that Google gives away for its users.

Apart from the above features, Picasa also permits you to post up your Web albums as part of Google services, certainly. With these services, Picasa allows you to email your photos, print them out, make cool collages, order prints as well as post them on Google. If Google fixes its troublesome tutorials and makes its Web Album more attractive and appealing, I'm sure that Picasa will just be something you can't live without.

Pikeo is not a newly-invented website as it has been around for quite some time. Its name tells you that it's quirky thing that has albeit limited, appeal and an unusual stuff the internet users could expect for. However, it is fundamentally a photo sharing website. It means a lot for the travelers to share their travelling experiences via photos and geotagging with the world. The feature of geotagging allows you to easily tag your photos with locations and keywords to identify them quickly when you search through the photos which will definitely save your time from the hassle of browsing a large image file. The integrated slideshow and trip daily are pretty interesting features you will find when using Pikeo. In fact, Pikeo shows your photo location in the map in the most interesting and attractive manner.

The start page of Pikeo is packed with the wonderful stuffs that might have intrigued you to give it a try. It gets you some time to load and timed out before you are prompted for a registration. When you log in, you will be greeted with your user dashboard and a fairy interesting site. You will see a nice sidebar with a scrollable view of Pikeo's blog and urging towards Orange's users to access this site via the mobile interface on its left.

Well, this very mobile-friendly website is currently in a beta version. As long as you could surf through your mobile, you will find Pikeo usable. It has two facets- the Web experience and the mobile experience for Pikeo. However, I found the latter is fun, the former less so.

Here, you will first see the promising name and the cute icon. Its member starting page gives you a great pick of what everyone is taking photos of and a close-up of featured photos as well. You might now love the person who invented the digital camera as you can have so many spectacular pictures at your fingertips even if you just have a glimpse of moment.

Webshots is cute, cool and fairly straight to the point. Thankfully, its sign up procedure is relatively simple as compared to Frickr. Currently, Webshots has over 584 million photos, which is considered a huge amount, come to think of it.

If you choose to pay US$29.88 a year for stock photos that aren't the usual boring bits of stock, you get unlimited downloads of the available Pro Shots. Nevertheless, when you download the photos for your own use or for other commercial purposes, you have to contact the photographer individually. Most people find this to be troublesome and indeed, if you are asked to contact the photographers themselves, sometimes it would be a shame for certain persons, really.

Like Pikeo, Webshots is all mobile support. Its mobile version is pretty simple and faster to download as compared to OVI. This is certainly a plus for those who want to have an easy and a quick mobile experience.

Formerly, OVI was called Twango. Then, Nokia has rebuild it into more features from being merely a photo and video sharing space to an all encompassing space to push its N-Gate and music platforms.

As OVI is powered by a Java app, you are requested to have Java installed on your system prior to the use of this website. The upload speed will depend utterly on your internet connection. You can email your photos to your OVI account, but prior to this, you need to add the originating email address to your address book. If neither of these options appeal, then Window XP users can use the Window XP Web Publishing Wizard.

OVI is a website that you can upload various types of media. They don't limit users to merely photos or video, and perhaps, this is the beauty feature of OVI. That means you can share anything here, but its drawback is that you can't post anything larger than 100MB. With the 100MB limit, OVI makes its website less likely to be a dumping site for an illegal file sharing. Some users may have cried foul to find such limitation. Apart from this small catch, OV1 is the wonderful website for you to upload as many files as you desire and as often as you wish. You can even upload every RAW still on your camera, which is obviously a photographer's dream.

OVI has made its website simpler to embed your images from your channel onto web pages. These channels mark the strength of OVI- it is easy for you to create more channels as you wish, even it allows designating privacy options for your media channels. OVI offers its users with the widgets and various means to display the media files, including tickers, Flash, JavaScript and slideshow, which are obviously trying to persuade you to make use of it. OVI also offers tons of features besides its little fault for an incredible price- free of charge!
