What is Click Fraud

If you earn money on the internet by posting articles, recipes, pictures, or anything else that pays you when people look at it, you should know what click fraud is. On the internet, advertisers pay for their ads by the number of times they are viewed or clicked on. From your perspective a click would be anytime someone looks at your post, and the articles are present.

Click fraud happens when you find a way to generate large quantities of traffic to your site that does not result in anyone seeing the ads that would have an interest in them. A computer can be programmed to visit the same site over and over. At computer speeds, this can create thousands of clicks in a very short time. If you solicit everyone you know to visit the same web page dozens of times each per day, this also is click fraud.

When the purpose of the visit is to create income for the person hosting the ads and not to give the ads a chance to produce income for the advertiser, it is fraud. Many companies have software to monitor where the various visitors to their site come from. When a pattern of visits begins to appear from the same computers over and over, the traffic is investigated to see if click fraud is being done.

Make no mistake. Click fraud is stealing. It also weakens the ability of the internet to produce revenue. If advertisers believe that dollars they are paying each month for the ads is not productive, they will pull the ads and all revenue will be lost for the cheaters and the honest users. This practice is watched as closely as card counters in a casino.

There is a lot of money to be made on the internet. Click fraud is roughly the equivalent of a pyramid scheme. Those who are early on the scam may make some big bucks, but everyone else loses. Someone who generates an extra ten or twenty thousand clicks takes money away from those who are working for it honestly. It is possible to drain enough money from the site that they work for to sink it financially.

These companies will come after those who commit click fraud and get caught. It can result in lawsuits to recover damages. The guilty parties may very well go to jail for awhile to ponder their evil ways. Because multiple scams are needed to generate truly large sums of money, the one committing click fraud will have many companies and people after him or her.

Advertising your website is not click fraud. Finding ways to entice people to come view your site in legitimate ways is just good business. These visitors will see your material and perhaps click on the ads and support the advertisers, too. That is how the world is supposed to run.

Selling Information Online: Myths & Realities

Talk about the cat chasing its tail! Whew... How on earth do you jump on the ferris wheel of online information and better yet - why on earth would you want to?

How many totally useless websites and blogs have you visited? How long did it take you to realize that no one is giving up anything? It's just one long, endless array of the same regurgitated 'wanna make money?' promise without any meat...oh - and a 'buy this' at the end.

It can be horribly frustrating and really undermine your plans to contribute something of quality to the world online.

So where is the quality hiding and why can't you find it?

You are clicking on the top ten sites

Your keywords are too general

You aren't certain which keywords will net the results you seek - if the data even exists.

That's the major malfunction of popular, generalized search engines. Here's a great example:

Search words: make money online

Most of us have tried that one and we recall the hours spent chasing links to sites and blogs whose only goal was to sell us what we know should be available free.

Follow these rule about looking for information you can truly utilize:

Break it down. Sure you want to make money but think about everything you must do before the money pours in. Think about the website creation, the content, the products, the marketing, directing traffic to your site, the unique slant or niche that will set you apart.

Once you have a 'To Do' list, look for education. Go to nonprofit and education websites. Research institutions that place it all online for anyone to take advantage of. I'll give you a hint: MIT OCW. Specifically, look at Online Search & the Battle for Clicks. The fact is, you won't make it without hours spent on valid education.

Writing online and the sale of information is predominantly the greatest moneymaker. It is also the easiest to access. It doesn't require a website or any expense at all. So, how do you become profitable? How do you develop an audience or regular writing jobs? The answer is simple - you write. You create blogs, submit material every day and practice to find what works. You market your writing, publishing history and reputation - then you write some more.

It is a myth that millions of dollars are just waiting for you to arrive. However, the competition is not as fierce as it may appear. People are looking for good content, professional writers and consistency. Give it to them and you will see your efforts bear fruit.

High cost, ineffective and practically useless means and methods have become the hallmark of modern-day business advertising. This has necessitated change of business marketing strategy for better rewards. New advertising methods such as the pay per click program have been established. This program is known to attract customers in large numbers, thereby enhancing greater sales of goods and services.

A pay per click program also known as a sponsored link or sometimes called as sponsored ad is an online marketing tool that provides the business owner or online marketer with an opportunity to display ads on web pages resulting from internet searches. This mode of advertising is more commonly used in content carrying websites.

A pay per click program works by directing clients from the advertising web page which contains your ad to your website as it happens with blogs. With proper planning, an effective pay per click program can drastically improve sales of goods and services for an individual or business. One only need select strategic keywords and phrases that will easily attract all kinds of traffic; including those with absolutely no interest in your service.

The keywords or phrases which are content of your web page drives a person who visited your webpage once to come back and scrutinize your website later; and possibly buy your products. You hence pay for only those visitors who have been directed to your website from the ad.

In establishing a pay per click program, one first identifies the target traffic and ensures the inclusion of catchy or attractive keywords. Localizing traffic to your website involves only providing information which is needed by people searching for some information or data from that specific location; possibly a state, country or continent.

It is important to ensure that your pay per click program is active by using longer keywords which are easily targeted by web traffic and would cost less to sustain. Incorporating deliberate misspellings associated with your products or services is yet another tactic of getting traffic, and at a discounted rate.

A pay per click program works best when keywords in your content are placed in topic sentences and titles of your online ads. Google Analytics provides you with value-added, readable reports about your websites to enable you implement an effective per pay click program and could be an important acquaintance. Google Analytics tools could be in form of MSN adCenre, Google AdWords or even Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Results from a pay per click program have proved to be instant making it a great way of online marketing. Implement an effective pay per click program for your small business today and enjoy the benefits of up-to-date online marketing strategies and the best of luck.

Prostituting Your Profile on Facebook

Facebook is a monster. Despite its unpopular new user interface, and lots of niche social networking competition, there's no stopping Facebook's phenomenal growth. The ultimate social net continues to expand across the globe at a staggering 3% per week growth rate, according to GoLoco Blog. Last year the network consumed North America, and this year the website's growth has been highest in Europe. In August 2008 it was reported that there are already 17 countries that have more than one million users, with Belgium set to become #18.

Awed by these amazing numbers, its no wonder that so many innovative social marketers are dreaming up new ways to advertise to friends and family in this immense network. There are pages, groups, applications and photo galleries to game. My favourite innovation is by a Canadian cell phone company Solo Mobile that has built a cool photo bubbling application called Blabble - the free service produces a text bubble that is very similar to their brand, so essentially they are allowing people to brand photos with the essence of their logo. Its a useful application - good marketing.

The Beacon of Protest on Facebook

Microsoft's 240 million dollar cash injection (for 1.6% ownership) in October last year helped Facebook launch a smart ad delivery program called Beacon, which debuted on November 6th 2007. When first debuted, this software would search and compile details about your profile with information gleaned from several assorted Facebook partners including LiveJournal, NYTimes (NYT), Sony Online, Blockbuster (BBI), Bluefly.com, STA Travel, The Knot, TripAdvisor, Travel Ticker, TypePad, viagogo, Vox, Yelp, WeddingChannel.com and Zappos.com. Although users had the ability to opt of the program, there was a storm of protest. Facebook argued that the harvested information helped Beacon target ads to be relevant and provide the very best experience, but it had internet privacy watchdogs wagging their fingers. Thirty days later Facebook changed Beacon's mandate, and now this ad delivery program is far less aggressive.

Facebook Ad Logic Became Unfathomable

In the summer of 2008, Rob Campbell (that's me) found his profile carried advertisements for teeth whitening dentists located near his home in Toronto Ontario. This made me wonder what piece of media did I author that would prompt such an initiative? Or is it simply my age, single status, and proximity to the retailer?

Andrea Dickson wrote an insightful piece about how poorly the Facebook Advertising machine was marketing to her profile, in an interesting piece published on Wise Bread titled, Why Does Facebook Ads Hate Single Hetero Sexual Women?

In this post she states, If Facebook cared to dig any deeper in my profile, they would notice that I belong to a fair number of liberal groups on through their site, and might start pushing Obama stickers towards me in great fistfuls. Or maybe they would see how often I am listening to music on Pandora, and casually throw the occasional concert tickets ad my way. They might notice from my status update references and fan club memberships that I have a very serious crush on Hiro Nakamura. Couldn't one of the dating ads at least point me towards a site filled with nerdy Japanese guys who can bend time and space?

In September 2008, Billie Mintz rented his friend's Facebook status bar:

Corporate Social Responsibility expert Billie Mintz, on behalf of Artists Raising Consciousness crossed an important social media advertising boundary by agreeing to rent his popular friends Facebook status bar for marketing purposes. Billie's Facebook Status video documents this transaction, and hints at the true diameter of this moral can of worms . Would you sell your Facebook status bar updates? Would you allow 3rd party advertising to be sent to your friends, in your name?"

Fortunately CSR expert Billie Mintz is an innovator in new media production pertaining to philanthropy with a vision to create awareness and passion for social change. Artists Raising Consciousness was created to advance the awareness of social issues through the creation of films tailored to a specific cause. Billie used his friends status bar to promote The Message in a Bottle Facebook group.

The Message in a Bottle web video initiative, which is sponsored in part by Molsons, studies the social responsibility of breweries with regards to the proliferation of a responsible drinking message in Canada.

In a related press release Billie is quoted saying, what a great idea to reach a different group of people," and he continues, We negotiated a price based on the size of his network, and then I immediately started broadcasting my messages - kind of like renting ad space.

This activity was actually predicted by Jens Berget, in his Sly Marketing blog. In the spring of 2008 he wrote that if you use the status updates too much as a way to promote yourself and your business, you might end up getting banned. "Be aware, you can get banned for having too many contacts , or if you publish breastfeeding images or if you use a name that is not your legal first and last name . And here are 13 other reasons why you can get banned by Facebook." classic.

Would You Sell Ads to your Friends on Facebook?

Today, Billie Mintz has successfully used his friend's Facebook status to market his Message in a Bottle project, but this is a slippery slope that other social marketing firms will no doubt follow to the bottom. The real danger is that artificial friend messaging systems will become so intelligent, it will soon be impossible to recognize your real friends from machines that emulate their diction and behaviour. Just as Beacon was initially designed to harvest data to better focus ads on Facebook members in November 2007, and countless new 3rd party applications harvest data today, what new technology will pervert the integrity of your friends' profiles tomorrow?

Make Money Online with Survey Sites

The internet is the greatest source you can have today. It is like when railroads had a big effect in the United States in the late 1800s. The internet can bring you money. The main reason is advertising. Companies want people to find out about them and become successful.

Ways to be sure not to get scammed:

Don’t give out credit card information on these offers.

Read what you need to do in order to get credit, and not wind up doing extra work, taking extra time.

Don’t trade or pay for referral guides, they don’t work, create your own tactic.

A site I use is Rewards1. A survey site is where you can get around an average of 50 cents a survey offer. A survey takes 5 min. most of the time. If you do the math, that's 6 dollars a hour! Not to bad. A problem that comes up, is offers sometimes not crediting or not enough offers to do. This site also has referring people as an option. You can receive 20%. I will be honest. I have only earned 20 dollars in 2 months, about 80% in the first month. I have referred 44 people and earned a little over 4 dollars from referrals.

I have done only 20 offers. Not too bad for a little of my time, and also because one offer credited 6 dollars to my account and took a little longer to do. You can also order prizes straight from the site or custom order from another site. Another site, which is rather the same, is prize rebel. Works the same as rewards1. When you get a chance, check out these sites.

Social Networking with a Cause

Theme

For almost a year now, I've been trying to share useful information with people who enjoy social networking online. Generations to come will be able to benefit from the skills we all possess - the ability to create and maintain networks online.

Social Networking - Background

Generation Y started social networking sites, and we've all witnessed the growth of these sites. Sites like these are producing a large amount of money from advertising revenue. Why? Because it just makes sense. Why does a business or company choose to advertise on billboard signs and commercials? Because the more exposure they get to the general population, the better. It's the same idea with websites. If there are millions of people using a site, advertisers jump at the chance to have exposure in a large market of a targeted population.

The future of social networking?

I believe that the people who are creating and maintaining relationships on these sites can and will benefit financially in the future. Imagine a site where the creator shares this advertising revenue with its active members who are helping to grow the network. Now imagine what young people could do with extra money that is being generated from such efforts. We could actually help change the landscape of our world by having the ability to donate, or by having more time to give to our families and/or those in need. The millions of dollars that are being made from advertising revenue on sites like myspace or facebook could actually be shared amongst a large population of social networkers with a cause - and only those that are serious and devoted would share a substantial portion of this revenue.

Learn more about this movement here, and let me know what you think.

How to Explode Your Adsense Revenue

Adsense, for those who aren’t familiar with it is a form of pay per click advertising that was created by the popular search engine company Google. Google released their Adsense program back in 2003, and has been making a lot of people hundreds and thousands of dollars every month.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Adsense was that you could just place the code given to you from the Adsense webpage, on your website pages and then start raking in the money. Although this was partially the case and you could make a small amount from doing this, what a lot of people didn’t realize is that by placing these ads on their sites and forgetting about them, they were missing out on hundreds to thousands of dollars each and every month.

This can be done through several ways; the first is that Google allows you to change the color of the ad and its text. This is very important and could mean the difference between the $100/month and $1000/month. The idea is that a lot of visitors will simply overlook ads, or will ignore them if they know they’re there.

There are basically two color methods that have been proven to work the best. The first is a color scheme that matches that of your webpage content. This will cause your ads to look just like your regular content, and will therefore look less like ads.

The second way is all about the position of the ads. There have been numerous extensive studies done on how people read or scan through a web page. It has been shown that people tend scan in a diagonal type pattern from the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner of the web page.

This is important information, because the more your ads are seen the more of a chance they will be clicked on. There is a diagram that shows the biggest hotspots on a web page that receive the most views from the reader. This diagram will help you to place your Adsense ads where they will get the most views. Please not that this diagram works great but you will still have to do some testing to see what works best for your web pages.

The third method is a color scheme that compliments your web page content. This has been shown to work on some websites because it will still flow with your content, but will help to bring attention to the ads as well.

Finally Adsense ads are textual ads that are shown based on the content of your specific web pages. The key to getting more ad clicks is to have advertisements that display ads that are relevant to your content. In order to do this you will have to make sure that your content includes good quality keywords and phrases that describe your specific topic. You will also want to avoid covering more than one topic per page as this will also give you less relevant ads.
